The Force were awesome for the first half of last season but went to pieces after the Crusaders drubbing.
This points to mental weakness.
And as everyone knows, that is more fatal than lack of experience or skill.
Also the Western Spirit, the Force in all but name, performing so poorly in the one-and-only ARC also showed there's something wrong there.
I'd like to see them get into the semis as I'm a card-carrying Force supporter (as well as the Blues) but I think the mental strength has got to improve.

I think you're right GK, only depth in the the tight five may be their problem as they get furhter int othe season. They have some very good loose forward depth, but after their starting tight five, there doesn't appear to be much experienced back up.

Still I would love to see Aussie John take the force boys to the semis.

Most are rating the Tahs as the Australian team most likely to make the finals. My pick would be the Force. The culture and consistency of the club so far should start showing through with on field results this year.

For sure, quite alot of All Blacks eventually got subbed into the mix. Oh well, tough game by the sounds of it.

Side note: Anyone see Jason Eaton lately? What a cave man, lol.

Re:Super 14 thread !!! Reply to this message
True Mark, but there were still quite a few AB's in the side. And after half time Mitchell pulled Giteau (and a few other names) who had been making all the plays. That said, it was a trial and lets not read too much into it.

Suffice to say Deans rated the Force performance enough to tip them for a final four spot.

Next week will be a much better indicator of the status quo when the Saders mee the Tahs. I just hope both coaches pick strong sides.

Re:Super 14 thread !!! Reply to this message
Well there were about 3 players who would usually start in the Crusaders top team starting in this match so I'm not surprised that the Force dominated the opening quarter. Some of the names in the Crusaders starting team I haven't even heard of so it's no shock the scoreline was like this.

Both teams had good defence by the sounds of it and contained eachother well. Flynn, Carter, R. Thorn, Filipo and Ellis are all on the mend. Ross Filipo maybe another 4 weeks until return and Ellis is pretty much gunna be out most of the season. Those others I mentioned should be ready for game 1 of the Super 14. Next match for the Crusaders: 'Tahs at Aussie stadium.

Force looked good and the saders who only got away with the win in the last 5 mins. Mitchell took quite a few of his big names off at half time, so this was a good hit out against the competition benchmark.

Come too think of it,Canes,Blues,Sader's, they all did quite well considering they didn't have there AB player's due to the RWC. Goes to show the talent in the young player's who are rising up..

God we have talent :)

Re:Super 14 thread !!! Reply to this message
It's a wonder why the Blues didn't win it last year, RC. Certainlly a few players seemed to drop off a bit and selections didn't help towards the end. But yeah, you guys have quite a depth of talent up there and for most of the season they went really well. I'm no Auckland supporter but for International selection purposes, I'd actually be watching some of the Auck guys closely -- see how the younger ones from last years Air NZ Comp go.

Re:Super 14 thread !!! Reply to this message
I approach every Super comp with the same lacklustre feeling.
One of faint hope which will quickly be swept away by the harsh light of reality.
The coach is overrated, unpopular and useless.
The players are apathetic and perfunctionary, merely serving time until some northern hemishpere contract is offered.
The administration is made up of amatuer era morons who have no idea what the average supporter thinks and they care even less.
My name is rugbycolumn and I'm a Blues supporter...

Was it not just two seasons ago that they won the competition......? No, sorry that was the Local competition in NZ. However, I do believe they will do well this season in the S14. What can I say, the blind faith of a faithful fan......

Blessings

Great for the Crusaders. You can never read anything into these warm up games of course but no ones denying it's a solid start. Well done to our lads and hopefully we can keep the good results up when it counts.

Re:Super 14 thread !!! Reply to this message
Crusaders coach Robbie Deans said his team's 55-33 win over the Hurricanes on Friday proved that teams who play a positive brand of rugby will benefit most from the Experimental Law Variations (ELVs) in the Super 14.

"While today was the first experience for everybody involved, it does appear that the new law variations should reward teams that are positive and play constructively, " Deans told the Crusaders website after the match.

He explained that the fourteen tries scored in the match were not a direct result of poor defence, but rather because of both team's willingness to spread the ball.

"There weren't too many of the tries that were scored that you could put down to missed tackles," he said.

Deans, who enters his last Crusade with a team that has dominated Super Rugby in recent years, was pleased with the result and the performance from the Canterbury franchise, as it was far more than just a warm-up match.

"It might have been a pre-season game, but it was still a big occasion for those players, and their performance showed how much it meant to them," added Deans.

"The immediate feedback from the players was that it [the game] is definitely faster, but they all enjoyed it," Deans said.

"Obviously everyone will be better for the run, but the fact the players were up to the mark first up reflects the work they have all put in over the summer.

"For a first up performance, that area [turnovers] was pretty good," added Deans.

"The statistics as far as the turnovers go certainly weren't excessive!"

Crusaders 55 to the Canes 33.

First match complete, sound like the Crusaders had the legs after trailing at half time.
