| I like that 'Tahs halfback. Nifty chap. Him and Corrdingly for the Reds would be good Wallaby contenders for the 9 jersy. |

Point taken about the ref ado.
But mate, the 'Tahs were bloody awful, they didn't play anywhere near their best.
They have to stop letting the close ones get away, it killed them last season. |

I have to agree with Ado. I'm a Crusader supporter so I'm glad a Kiwi team won obviously. But the Tahs were a bit hard done by..
Sivivatus try wasn't a try UNLESS he got it down behind the post which we couldn't of seen but when he did come into the camera'a view he defiently did not ground it as far as I could see. And yep, Lote was not into touch but Turner would have been shunnted in anyway, Ado. I know where your coming from though. Plonker and the TMO basically cost the Highlanders last week against the Reds... |

You cant deny Sivivatu deserved that try and you also cant deny the Waratahs didnt deserve to win that match.

That plonker jonker lost the game for them not Beale. Sivivatu's try wasn't a try. And that K1 numbnut Bray called Tuquiri into touch(which he wasn't!) as he gave the ball to Turner with the line open.
Cheifs can count themselves very very lucky. The Tahs butchered enough tries in that first half to win the season. |

I think we are all in violent agreement here: Tahs did well to keep Canes scoreless & play tough, gritty footy for 80 mins whilst Canes made their otherwise jumbled effort look better than it was.
Tahs clearly deserved to win and it's encouraging (my 2nd team), but I wonder how they would've faired against the Saders... |

Ado,
I would have to agree with you. I also agree we will see a different side the next time the Hurricanes play. They have the talent but they still have to use their heads and play smart rugby.
Blessings

Read what you want into the stats Gale, but it was clearly a game of two halves. First half was all Canes running. Possession was 60/40 in their favour. Great first line and scrambling defence held hem out. The second half was all Tahs. They dominated all the set pieces even taking two opposition lineouts and ruled at the breakdown.
The Canes ran it whenever they could and that was their mistake. Had they been more strategic in attack and worked to a game plan they might have crossed.
For example, if you're playing the Tahs you'd run your big men at Beale. They did this twice the entire game. They should have also aimed a few high balls at the debutant fullback Turner and aimed Nonu at him. Not once did they try it. They caught Tahu out of position once or twice early , but again great scrambling saved the Tahs.
The Canes lost it for two reasons. They were belted up front. And they played dumb tactical game of rugby.
That said, I doubt they will make the same errors again. Cooper is a smart coach and I reckon the riot act would have been read post match. |

Zedds,
"Honestly I think the Hurricanes made the Tahs look better than they are at the mo"
Would have to agree based on the stats. As I recall, Canes made 900 metres whilst Tahs less than 600. Tahs also made more tackles and missed a whopping 40 or so - the most over the weekend. Based on that, Wellington certainly made them look better.
But credit to the Tahs for not conceding a try and for still winning comfortably in the face of such odds. |

| ado, you could be right about the big SA forwards, but you would have to say that the likes of Mose Tui'ali, Nick Williams, Jerome Kaino, and big Jamie Mackintosh have shown that there is still a place for the power game just as long as you have fitness to go with it. (little)Jerry Collins(who has lost 9kg) and Liam Messam on the other hand looked a lot less effective. |

After looking at most of the games over the weekend, one thing is patently clear - The Crusaders are looking very very sharp. Of all teams, their the ones who looked like they'd been playing under the new rules for years.
I also liked the way the Blues held their composure upfront before breaking out. The Tahs too played a smart tactical game. Their forwards were exceptional and whilst their backline was new, it seemed to look to have the makings of a pretty potent combo.
I don't think we'll see how good the SA sides are until they come up against some of the better K1 outfits. I have a sneeking suspicion that the extra five metres will expose their big forwards and their backs won't have the ability to contain the likes runing angles of the saders, blues or Canes.
It'lll certainly be an interesting week 2. |

| I still find the new rules difficult to watch, it was a bit like a game of touch rugby with no structure. Still I am sure i'll get used to it. |

Turner is certainly a great option for the wallabies this year, he had a great game at fullback. Good to see some entusiasm.
Honestly I think the Hurricanes made the Tahs look better than they are at the mo but they certainly look a better side than last year. Should be interesting. |

Zedds,
How well did Eaton play! Smith put in as well (as he always does) and JC never stopped running. But unlike the down-sized Palu, a smaller JC doesn't seem to be having the same impact.
I think the Tahs front 3 - particulaalry when Robinson & Polota-Nau came on - and their loose 3 won it, along with a strong game from the midfield & Turner. |

| As a Hurricanes supporter i was a bit peeved at there performance. They led the territory, possession and line breaks stats easily in the first half but still came out second best. To many dropped balls and unforced errors. Congrats to the Tahs and supporters on there win. |

Panther,
Was talking about Flavell's first pass to set up the move down the sideline. Agree with all your other comments.
ML,
Agree Afoa MoM. Lauaki is Islander for 'Lazy Liability'. Rodney Blake looks fitter than him!!!
Donald is class. I think he is AB quality - but was left too many times to either clean up with some awesome hits & cover defence, or to create opportunities. Am a big fan of his. AB are awash with choices there, with at least 3 of the best in the world at the moment. |

| Blues were very good. Lauaki had no chance though with the Scrum going backwards, sideways, every other way except forward so I doubt Messam wouldve been any better. |

The Blues looked very good. John Afoa was man of the match for mine (just ahead of Kaino) - fantastic scrummaging, just wonderful mechanics at tighthead. The entire set of Blues backs were excellent (though Lee was very lucky indeed not to have been sin-binned for an exceptionally cynical obstruction of Leonard). All-in-all, the game showed me that the ELVs are no problem, except to teams that are not superbly conditioned (Jonmo Gibbes looked like he was going to croak). Oh, and although it will look like the changes are all for the backs, that is not so: the role of the forwards is in no way diminished, as the Blues showed clinically.
Chiefs need to get over Lauaki's bulk at No. 8 and move Messam in permanently. Messam is a better-than-average No. 6, but they cannot take full advantage of his skills there. Lauaki's vertical running style is just hopeless, and he creates no opportunities for the rest of his teammates. He can't jump worth a lick, and his defense is entirely ordinary. I don't know what you do with Lauaki - he's a very average No 6, and probably would sulk if moved. Is Bates still available?
Donald will come right, but he's not AB quality in terms of relaibility and confidence.
