| Soseni Anesi has a time of 4.53sec for 40m. Rico Gear 10.4. Gear would blitz Anesi over 100m because they say Anesi has top end gas which is not true. Anesi would beat Gear in a 40m sprint easy because thats what he's the best at.40m sprints.Gear would blitz him over 100m off course with such ease. Here's an example Joe roks blitz him a the beginning of the year in the super14 clearly. So Anesi can't run 100m in 10.53sec because everyone is judging their 40m times to their 100m times which does not make any sence. |

| Rico has a hand held 100m time of 10.51sec which nearly everybody knows. Gisborne boys high student Yarride Rosario has a PB of 11.03sec and is 15yrs old. He's out to break his favourite rugby player and idol Rico Gear's 100m record which has not been broken since he set it in 1996 at the age of 17 two years before he made his debut for the highlanders and NZ sevens team. 10.63sec was the record. |

| I also have heard the New Zealand wing Joe Rokocoko has a new 100m time of 10.44sec. Slightly quicker than his previous 10.66. And how about when that NZ sevens coach(Don't know his name)?...says that joe has *** ed 10.17sec which I can't believe is true. He has only been timed twice 10.66,10.44sec now his PB. |

| Doug Howlett 10.68sec 100m. Also former Auckland Boys Grammar student by the name of Kane Robertson(Italian Rugby)once teamed up in the 4 by 100m relay with Doug Howlett. Apparently Kane has covered a 100m distance in 10.8 which is fairly quick for a guy at 5ft 7. |

So are you finally admitting that NFL players are much slower than olympians with that drug comment?
"Performance enhancing drugs aside, per competitor, league and union would offer much more $$ than athletics". Of cos dude, thats cos in athletics you don't get paid unless you win. Shirvo never dominated athletics how can u expect him to get paid big $$$. Its kinda what makes it prestigious when you win a gold medal.
Alright mate, I give up, Mini has run 40 in 4.1 and so can I ...big deal NFL players are slow. |

Didn;t naurice greene get done for roids? or was that someone else? Wait, its half the sport.
Performance enhancing drugs aside, per competitor, league and union would offer much more $$ than athletics. Ask Matt Shirvington.
Anyway, going off point. Mini has run 40 in 4.1, 30 in 3.5. Nfl players have recorded sub-4.5 second times on an extremely regular basis. It can be done. It has been done. It will continue to be done. i dont care what timing is used, more people play and are interested in footy than athletics, so maybe its athletics that should adapt. |

Mate union players are not faster over 40m than sprinters. I promise you that. Maurice Green don't need to train for the 40m but he is way faster over 40m than ANY footy player. If they could work out this splits for his 40m it would be much faster than ANY footy player.
When I was talking about wind up I'm refering to HUMANS (sprinters and footy players), its biophysics. Sprinters don't exactly take it easy over the first 40m.
ANY olympic class sprinter will smoke any union, league players over 40m.
Why would Doug howlett give up rugby when he can't even make it to the olympics? He doesn't have the speed to mix it with the sprinters thats why. I think u underestimate the value of a gold medal...maurice green isn't exactly poor. |

Did you remove the compulsory non-yahoo-website spaces?
Yeah, 10.68 when he is not, and never was, trained for 100m sprinting.
Yeh, maurice greene is FAST. but he is trained over 100m. Footy players are trained for 40m.
Let me put it in perspective. Danny Wicks, Newcastle forward, is the fastest at his club over 40m, but runs third last in 100m. The NFL players that run 40yds in 4.5 seconds, are buggered as all f//uck after 100m. Whilst the difference may only be 60m, its the technique i dare say.
Footy players dont get that chance to wind up, cuz its a short distance. Thus footy players would have more explosiveness off the start.
And no, doug howlett would not give up rugby for the olympics. Why give up 500K at least for the peanuts athletics gives ya? oh, i forgot, national pride. I somehow think rugby will hold a higher place in national pride stakes in NZ, and Australia, than atheltics. |

I had a website error when I copy pasted your link.
Well there is fast and FAST. fast = national champs levels, FAST = olympic grade. You first claim that these players are FASTER than olympians but the numbers just don't add up.
Douggie's BEST is 10.68 (according to wiki) the international olympic qualifying is ~10.21. Thats ~4m of difference right there and thats just qualifying, he'd be lucky to pass the first round with that time. He is only gonna run slower when he played for the ABs. By the way Maurice Green's PB is 9.79 which adds ANOTHER 4m on top of that.
So how is it possible that someone ~8-9m slower over the 100m than the world's fastest man run faster over 40m?
When someone runs the 100m in 10sec. It doesn't mean they hit the first 10m at 1sec. They need time to wind up to top speed. The first 40m in an athletic race is the 'slow' part of the race thats when athletes need to accelerate to hit their top speed. Thats why Green can only run 6.36 for the 60m and he's a sub 10sec runner.
Think about the Green example for a minute. 6.36 in 60m and 5.56 in 50m...wouldn't his 40m time be something like ~4.7?
(http://www.iaaf.org/athl etes/biographies/letter=G /country=USA/athcode=1504 4/index.html)
And no..100m is not an endurance race you don't get tired after 40m and slow down -.-
And just to pour salt over your wounds. (Someone said this already but I'll repeat). The FASTEST NZ guy is sprinter Chris Donaldson. Ive attached his stats (below). His PB is 10.17. He has only run under 10.2 twice in his entire career. If Doug Howlett could make the olympics I'm pretty sure the NZ rugby board will be more than happy for him to skip a few Bledisloe matches.

Ken Irvine is the greatest try scorer of all time and was named as winger in team of the century.
Back in his day, tey did have official races to determine who was the fastest man in league, the timing was not as comphrehensive as it is today, but it wouldnt have made much difference.
This is from RubenWikipeadia:
In 1961 Irvine showcased his speed at a specially-arranged event specifically in an attempt to break professional world record over 100 yards. Irvine won the event and equalled the record of 9.3 seconds. During the same event he would also win the 120 yard Dubbo Gift after starting a yard behind scratch, displaying his much-publicised speed.
Here is a site http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtml?xml=/s port/2007/10/17/srgall217.xml
it says habana can run 100m in under 11 seconds doug howlett ran 10.6... like i said, just cuz they dont devote their ife to sprinting doesnt mean they cannot be fast
I dare say people like Mini, billy slater, doug howlett would make the Olypics for their countries with their times. Reagrdles of the timing used, they are lightning. |

Sorry I don't know Ken Irvine. And who rated him? Is this 10.1 done via athletic timing (in a recognised event, where 100m is 100m and 1sec = 1sec) or is this similar to a Anthony Min 4.1 over 40.
But I do know JOe Roc, Habana, Sivi etc and they are not faster than sprinters and won't even get close. Union and league players adapt their bodies to the physical demands of an 80min game. Sprinters adapt their body to one 10sec burst, can't get any more specialised than that.
If footy players give up their footy weights and focused soley on sprinting then MAYBE they could achieve an olympic qualifying time...but that has rarely/ if ever been done. Look at how hard difficult Dwain Chambers is working just trying to qualify for the olympics. |

Ken Irvine, rugby league's greatest try scorer, was once rated the fastest man in the world. Ran 100m in 10.1 seconds back in the day.
Just cuz they chose another sport over dedicated sprinting does not mean that they couldnt faster than said sprinters. |

Mate these footy players are "fast" but they can't go close to an olympic class sprinter. I know you didn't make that comparison. But your statement that Anthony can run 4.1 in 40m is making that comparison.
And as I'm passionate about athletic, I kinda get upset when I hear a footballer can run faster than my olympic idols.
As to how much it takes away from it? Put it this way, I reckon 80% my squad can run faster than Anthony Min over 40m and we're low 11sec runners. Who runs ~7.1-3s over 60m (athletic timing).
Anyway I think I'm just repeating myself and should shut up. |

Yeah, i said from the start it was done from first movement.
I fail to see how that takes away from it. Athletics way, fair enough for athletics... but as coppers and footballers, they dont wait for a starter before they start running.
Mind you, its from a standing start, not a crouching, so we dont get the propulsion that sprinters get. |

Oh mate absolutely agree with you a quick 40m doesn't translate into quick 100m. My main issue with notsobig's and others posting was statements that fotty players could run 40m in 4.1-4.3. Speak to anyone in track and field they'll blow up if they hear this.
Anyway, I discussed this with my training squad yesterday, one realisation as I mentioned previously is the different methodology in measuring the 40m sprint.
Method 1) The athlete reacts to a gun/starter and then crossing a beam. (this is what they use in the 100m, 60m races for track and field).
Method 2) the 40m times 'notsobig' is probably refering to is done from first movement. I.e. athlete crosses barriers with sensors. Or a cord is attached to their body which is attached to some measuring device. I think the reference on wiki KOB posted talks about this (thx KOB).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/40-yard_dash
There is significant differences in these two timing systems. The later is obviously ALOT faster..hence my disbelief. And my apologies for not picking this up earlier.
That been said, if a rugby player was timed using methodogy 1 i.e. the way they use in the olympics (which I consider to be the gold standard of measuring speed). There IS NO WAY he would be able to run 4.3sec in 40m..even 5 secs would be considered extraordinary.

djsle,
Some players who run a quick 40m do not translate into quick 100m times. For example, Steve McDowell(prop) was one of the quickest ABs of his time over the 40m. However, for a 100m sprint, he'd probably come last. So, when notsobig states he runs 5.51 over 40m for a 6'5 105kgs guy, dont be so quick to discredit him by pointing out that he would then run about 11secs for 100m. |

Thx Cass for awhile I thought the whole world have gone mad.
I think the timing of the 40m /40 year is critical. In athletics, athletes react to the gun. I believe in some these 40m sprints the footy player used is taken from their first moment. |
