The reason neither Ken Irvine nor Johnny Bliss ever ran at the Olympics was because they were both professional athletes playing rugby league in Australia and would never have qualified.
Michael Cleary on the other hand kept his amateur status (he was playing union at the time) and was able to run for Australia in the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth. |

In their prime the fastest runners were:
Caucau, Cullen, William Ryder, Toderai Chavhanga, Bryan Habana stand out.
There's a good Youtube video list of the fastest runners at: http://rugbygamers.com/articles/2-fastest-rugby player i pretty much agree with the list.
Gotta remember not every fast player will be running their max each time. |

| as regards to the fastest rugby player it would be Tonderai Chavanga, not that it matters any way coz speed aint everything. It is a non-substituable attribute even essential, but doesn't make him a better player then say Shane Williams. Also rugby players are not trained for excessive speed, they are trained for speed endurance over 100m and it is not quite fair to compare them to 100m specialists who condition themselves for an event lasting less than 10 seconds. However, it must be noted that most of the rugby speedster that you see were former sprinters; i.e; Habana, Chavanga, Howlett, etc. |

| Just a note - Pierre Spies of the Bulls ran a 10.6 in grade 12 at school. Not bad for a bloke who is 1.94m and was well over 100 kg. |

| I think that Warren McCann was the fastest in rugby boots in the 90s. He played for the Transvaal Team (renamed "the Lions"). He had a PB 100m of 10.1 and was South Africa National Sprint Champ. Also registered a 20.57 in the 200m in 1990, and had a world ranking of 36. He is currently the Speed caoch for the Lions. |

bouncerfreddy -
It is a rare occasion that Rugby League events make a significant impact on the national press, yet this week it most certainly has. The most infamous of British athletes, Dawin Chambers, has begun a months trial at Castleford Tigers. Many people have commented on this with respect to his ban for use of performance enhancing drugs.
In this case bouncerfreddy, thats an automatic disqualification, two years.... |

| bro wasn't saying Habana is the fastest ( prob one of them) but I rate him as one of the deadliest wingers on the circuit. One on one (and face to face), its always going to be harder for the defender to shut down an attacker of similar speed when the attacker got space and a running start. |
