Matthew Richardson:
Perhaps his new-found freedom and contentment have eased the pressure when kicking for goal, for he has kicked 24.12, a conversion rate of 66 per cent.
While I am totally happy to sing the praises of the Richo man, it needs to be pointed out (yes, again) that conversion rates donât include shots at goal that end up out of bounds on the full or fall short from a reasonable distance.
That, though, is as negative as I am going to be this time.
He is on track to kick more than 70 goals, an excellent return from a midfielder with licence to roam wherever and whenever.
He kicked 53.40 from 22 games last year, almost exclusively as full-forward.
Richoâs amazing ride through football may have reached fresh heights.
He has been unstoppable at times for years, yet he has been erratic, often wasteful and occasionally ill-tempered.
He is thriving in his new role. Playing up the field allows him to use his extraordinary reserves of pace and stamina.
He is, remember, 195cm and 104kg. His father, Alan, was ruck-rover to Mike Patterson for much of Richmondâs great days of the late 1960s, and Patterson was 193cm and 95.5kg, according to The Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers.
What is even more amazing is that just four players endure from the 131 hopefuls taken by the then 15 clubs in the 1992 national draft.
They are, in order of games played, Dustin Fletcher, Richardson, Scott Burns and Shane Wakelin.
Fletcher and Richo both started in the AFL in 1993, Wakelin â94, Burns â95.
Richardson is a phenomenon of the modern game, and the story isnât finished yet. |

Matthew Richardson:
AS bizarre as it sounds, a player in his 34th year and 16th season might be in the richest vein of form of his career.
"Buddyâ Franklin aside, Matthew Richardson is footballâs man of the moment.
Of the first seven rounds.
We are in awe of Franklin; we love Richo the package. All of us.
Itâs not just Richmond supporters who embrace him, but everyone who embraces the game and cherishes qualities such as spirit, loyalty, emotion (the full gamut) and humility.
Even opposition players admire and like Richo. Respect and fondness donât always go together in footy.
Former Carlton captain Anthony Koutoufides is one.
Kouta has huge respect for Richoâs talents from personal experience and a genuine appreciation of him as a person.
He has consistently acknowledged him his toughest opponent and saysRicho can win the Brownlow this year, which would make him the oldest winner in history.
âHeâs flying, Richo,â Kouta said last night.
âIf Richmond can win enough games (say 10), I believe he can win the Brownlow.
âI always believed he was going to kick 100 goals one year, and it still might happen. By freeing him up and playing him on a wing, his confidence is up and heâs probably a more rounded player now.
âIt would have been terribly frustrating for him at full-forward with the ball zig-zagging around all the time.
âHeâs been good for a long time, but heâs just playing really good, consistent football all the time now. I love watching him play.â
Richardson, who turned 33 in March, has racked up 132 disposals in seven games this year (average 19), has taken 74 marks (average 10) and kicked 24 goals.
Thatâs a nice return from someone who spends considerable time in the midfield and has ventured as deep as the opposition goalsquare many times.
His marking has been brilliant and inspirational. For teammates and supporters alike.
Perhaps his new-found freedom and c ... |

| All the players have stepped up so far this year, the good times are coming maybe not so much this year, but if we can keep this playing group together & the younger players get some more experance they will come, Richmond is in the same position as Geelong were a few years ago, look what happened there, the same will happen for the Tigers. |

| Hi chards, Deledio is already a star but most of the other youngsters just seem to be treading water. All these youngsters are heavily scrutinised around draft time but some how the ones we seem to pick leave their skills at the draft camp. Is it coaching or attitude who knows but unless this group steps up to the plate it's just going to be more of the same as in recent years. I think that the young Tigers have to attack at all cost, using their pace to advantage, of course there will be games when they're blown away but in time it will click. Last year our ruck division was decimated by injuries and the retirement of Greg Stafford made the problem even worse, most of our key defenders would normally be flankers and give away many cms and kgs every week. I'll be very interested in the way Rance goes, he's surpossed to be a very exciting key defender. We''ll have Cotchin but he's all clas but then again he's only a medium size. cogs return will be great but again he's medium size, there's nothing to suggest that we will be competitive in the ruck every week or that our key defenders will match up in size with their opponents. Anyway I'm looking forward to the coming season, we can't keep complaining about we you haven't got, the players must bite the bullet and do all the things thats drum into them in training sessions, I'm not expecting big things but a season like last year is totally unexceptable. |

Hey guys, just curious as to who you think might step up and have a break out season this year.
I think it will be Delidio. Will kick somewhere around 40 goals this year and will really take the next step in becoming the dominant force he should be.
tambling is another that will show great improvement but is still prob another year away from taking the game apart.
sadly cant see any key position prospects that look likely to dominate this year, although i think Kelvin Mooore will cement his spot in the back half.
Thoughts????????? Especially from those whoi may have sen the praccy games. |
