| Conrats to the Chooks, the better team won on the night. Craig Fitzgibbon only gets better with age, like a good wine. It was a good game but Souths let them get too far in front by allowing a couple of soft tries. Micheal Greenfield, Roy Asatasi David Kidwell and John Sutton had solid games. It is a shame that the game was marred with a bit of bad publicity concerning the Wing tackle. Cheap shot or not, these things will happen in a body contact sport. Eddie Paea has his chance now to really show his ability. Bring on the Doggies. |

Yeah I liked the bit where that cat got man-handled by ROY.That was the best hit for 2008 so far.At the after match interview they asked RoY if it was a square-up and he smirked and said "Na ,just a coincidence"
Big,tough and with a great sense of humour.Wish he was a Aussie. |

| Still just as proud statsy. We fell of the game in the first half and got back into it in the second. Better team won on the night. Compared to how the chooks started last year,it must feel good to get a win so early in the season. |

After 60 minutes of all the bash and barge those big forwards are going to be knackered and the little players are going to have a field day. I can see Wing scoring tries and setting up tries for others both sides of the field.
With 2 less interchanges this year, O'Meley and Mason will both have to play more then their usual 40 minutes.
Souths to win by 24 points. |

cont....
Players to watch
Craig Wing
Back in the red and green after eight years with the Roosters and faces his former side first up. Has slotted into the playmaking role comfortably under the guidance of head coach and former first grade half back Jason Taylor and scored the match winning try in the Charity Shield. Sure to be fired up for a big one to start the season.
Willie Mason
Been talking the talk and says he can walk the walk. Loves to fire himself up for a big game and has been instrumental in building the hype in the media this week. The cheer as Craig Wing runs onto A N Z Stadium will probably only be matched by the boos for 'Big Willie'.
Key match ups
Craig Wing v Mitchell Pearce
Pearce played some halfback with Wing at the Roosters last season before suffering a back injury and missing a big slice of the year so Wing should know a lot about his game.
Pearce is considered a Roosters rising star and Wing, charged with getting his outside backs firing, will be looking for a points decision at least.
Roy Asotasi v Mark O'Meley
Both players have been on the periphery of the pre-game talk preferring to let their deeds on the field speak loudest. Former team mates at the Bulldogs who will serve their sides in similar manner. Both vital men in getting their teams forward and stopping the opposition from doing so. Will be interesting to see how they are used by their respective coaches now the number of interchanges have dropped from 12 to 10.
Fetuli Talanoa v Anthony Minichiello
Talanoa has taken up in the Rabbitohs no.1 shirt where he left off last year. A strong runner of the ball on the kick return and very elusive when chiming into the backline or sniffing around the forwards for an offload. A serious back injury has hampered former Golden Boot winner Minichiello in recent seasons but he is confident he has overcome that. |

We could say this game has been 100 years in the making, and given the talk in the lead-up you would be forgiven for thinking that is the case.
Truth be known these teams last met on September 1, 2007, just over six months ago, a 26-12 win to the Roosters. But there is no doubt things have changed in both camps since then. The Rabbitohs played their first finals game in 18 years and are again a rugby league heavyweight while the Roosters have added a number of heavyweights to their pack.
It was a comfortable 18-6 win for the Rabbitohs in the corresponding first round clash last season that ushered in a new era for the South Sydney Football Club.
Souths have shown good trial form with a 44-0 win over the Sharks and a 24-20 victory over the Dragons in the 25th Charity Shield. While the Roosters notched up a win over the Tigers but went down to the Eels.
Ben Rogers was a late withdrawal for the home side due to a glute muscle injury while new Roosters signing former Melbourne back-up hooker James Aubusson is out of action with a groin injury.
This match between the only two remaining foundations clubs, and arch-rivals for 100 years is a fitting way to begin rugby league's Centenary Season. Sure to be no love lost and sure to be tight. |
