Defense is looking like the major issue for Port, a real lack of reliability down there. They might have to return Chad Cornes to CHB but he's usually needed in the midfield which lacks grunt.

Judging by the first couple of games, Port have to hope they have another good run with injuries because the youngsters didn't show much at all...if they need to play some of their rookies during the year they'll be in strife.

Our defense does suck. Why we didn't spend more time recruiting defenders and we let go of Symes (a defender) is beyond me.

At least they are trying to toughen up this year.

Meh

When it happens when the games count then there's time to worry. These games are just a chance to blood some younger players and give some less experienced players a taste of leadership.

If after round 5 we're 2-3 or worse then I'll be worried.

Brisbane and Port seem to be on the same high/low cycle so I can see them both being up in the mix in the next year or two. Both teams have managed a quick rebuild.

As for winning games by low margins at the end of the season I think its better to be playing tight games like that than blowouts. They played teams in contention and beat them on the day. The margin doesn't matter, only the win.

A lot of tight games can come down to a single mistake or two. If Port did win because of an opposition mistake then maybe the other team deserved to lose.

technically last year you were lucky as i said, hawks cats and lions were imo unlucky not to beat you,so if those games were losses insted of wins you would of finished 7th or 8th and not had home finals your team needs to be alot better in 08

Technically last year we were still in the rebuild. Going as far as we did just shows we're either ahead of schedule or there wasn't as much that needed rebuilding as it seemed.

B.Lade is getting on if you don`t win it all this year it will be tough,he gives your quicks first option at the stoppages and after brogan port doesn`t have much Pete.B *WILSON*(toughest guy on your team) Wazza T all onthe back end of there great careers it will be tough in two years go all out this year and luck goes your way (home finals and port may have another crack at the granny). As for the speed on your team everyone else is training too and also getting quicker toughness is not esy at all to replace against the cats your younger players showed little toughness or heart, this is not a knock on port i do not mind them it is only what i think.

I'll admit Port defied the odds playing fast paced and making the granny. Finals football usually won't allow for that and its the tougher teams that usually get through.

Here's the thing about giving a good hit though - you have to be able to catch them first or get lucky.

Port like to pride themselves on being the fittest team in the competition. The problem is its at the expense of gool old fashion toughness.

True but in the finals the only game we lost was the grand final.

port should make the eight barring injury just remember they won a couple games that maybe they should not have if the ball bounced the other way. There was much between 2nd 8th last year.Really need someone to step up down back or the finals will be played on the road

Port always looked poor in defense when Wakelin didn't play, so there'd have to be major improvement in Chaplin, Carlyle, Thurstans, etc. for us not to concede a lot of points this season.

They don't want to be relying on Tredrea and Westhoff as the only key forwards, be nice if someone else could provide a good target down there. Westhoff should only be the third tall and Tredrea remains a question mark.

They also need to be tougher and harder in the midfield and around the ball. If the GF didn't teach some of them what's required I don't know what will.

Interesting season ahead!

Are we a genuine chance in 2008? Reply to this message
Our pre-season training has been tough as ever. Our firing rookies have a little experience under our belts. Our leaders We have the shame of last year's grand final to spur us on.

Barring a run of bad injuries, can we do it in 2008?

At this stage I think the potential is there but we will have to see how we have improved compared to the rest.
