It got so annoying that a jousting comedy re-run on Ch10 was more appealing. Then I found out SBS were showing some ping-pong.

the hockey on now is the first piece of live coverage in over 1.5 hours, and will be at the expense of the mens steeplechase final. of the "six gold medals at the track" on "telstra top tv", we are yet to see any.

Re:worst coverage ever of any olympics Reply to this message
if Channel 7 intended to ignore the basketball they should've given it to SBS, like the Soccer.

otherwise, tell us when you're going to show games, even if they're on delay, FFS even if they're on at 3am in the morning.

at least then people who work can record it and watch it when they come home from work. a whole audience that 7 is missing out on. these should be Ad break free and instead include ticker advertising.

get it 7??

get with the times. not only are you missing a potentially larger audience, but you're annoying the audience you already have.

they had years to plan for this coverage to get it right. no excuses.

Now we have the latest Olympic news update and apart from all the news is about Australia, no mention of any other countries. The latest news is apparently John tomkins finishing last in his last race and yes they are showing the whole painful interview again. This was yesterday!

I know where I will be in 2012!

Channel 7 are soon to show the mens 110 hurdles and tell us that the champion is from China. Yet the BBC website say he has withdrawn. How come CH7 don't know this?

Here we go again, medal presentation for the triathlon. Live on ABC radio, and ch7 is wasting time on a stupid montage and studio chatter, and an ad break.

Well done, 7....

Re:worst coverage ever of any olympics Reply to this message
ABC's radio commentary is brilliant. Nothing like putting damn ch7 on mute and listening to good commentary on the sports, plus they cut to other events live, like the basketball, which ch7 seem to be ignoring.

Maybe they'll show the basketball in some slow-mo montage.

Having witnessed the way the BBC cover the Olympics I'd say the best plan is to all chip in a dollar to the ABC so that they can buy in the BBC feed and then cut to local comment of events with Aussie interest. The BBC commentators are excellent and know what to say...and more importantly when to shut up.

Re:worst coverage ever of any olympics Reply to this message
No improvements have been made.

After Channel 7 was berated for showing the AFL the previous weekend, they did it again this past Sunday. It seems that no matter how angry and vitriolic that their viewers may get, Channel 7 continues to ignore them.

Furthermore, the question I posted on Friday to the moderators of this forum is still unanswered.

This is truly disappointing. It really doesn't feel like we are making any sort of difference here dispite this being the most active thread in the forum (which must be quite disappointing since the original intent of the forum was cast in a more positive light).

SBS's primary function is to appeal to ethnic audiences.

there must be a big handball community somewhere in Australia

Also forgot to mention that there has been NO SOFTBALL shown, this might be SBS's bit though, they seem to have been handballed the ball sports, but why did we have to watch the excruciatingly boring Handball games when we could have been watching Softball. Sheesh.

Some events have gone completely AWOL all together, Channel 7 has not shown any of the Shotput, Javelin, Hammerthrow, I saw 5 mins of Longjump, and hopefully they haven't missed the Highjump as this is a highlight of the Track AND FIELD events.

Saw 10 mins shooting, 10 mins archery, maybe 10 mins sailing...in a whole week. WTF?!?!?! These are Olympic events, maybe they're not deemed "sexy" enough to take up valuable air time that 7 could be using to show more gut-churning new promo's.

<<<There is no law (re; commercials) >>>

There is a law (but its not as I understood).
"Australian commercial television is restricted to 20% of its transmission time, or 12 minutes an hour over a rolling 24-hour period; there are no restrictions on how much advertising may appear in any particular hour".

UK and German commercial channels seem to have a better system with an "average of 7 minutes per hour, with limits of 12 minutes for any particular CL0CK hour (8 minutes per hour between 6pm and 11pm)"

Useless information but now you now.

Sonia told to 'play dumb'
Article from: The Advertiser

August 18, 2008 09:50am

CHANNEL 7's strategy to dumb down its coverage of the Olympic Games has backfired against the network and dismantled the formerly esteemed reputation of TV personality Sonia Kruger.
Have your say!Add your comments or
read what others are saying
The gregarious talent has risked her popularity among the viewing public to play the role of "dumb blonde" at the instruction of network heads hoping to appeal to a non-sporting market, Confidential can reveal.

Formerly renowned for the witty asides and cheeky quips routinely delivered in her role as Dancing with the Stars co-host, Kruger has been slammed for being frivolous and ill-informed on the much-maligned Yum Cha morning show.

But as disgruntled viewers flood online forums and talkback radio with Kruger criticisms, an industry source has claimed the hard-working personality was instructed to deliver the various gaffes which have prompted the backlash.

"Channel 7 had a very deliberate strategy with the Yum Cha program, and that was to dumb it down in order to make it digestible for non-sporting viewers," the insider said.

"Everything on that program was scripted, and Sonia has executed the strategy exactly how Seven wanted it to play out."

Her gaffes include asking if the 48kg weightlifting category referred to the athletes or their barbells, wondering why the term "chink in the armour" might go down badly in Beijing and questioning what happened if it rained during the 800m track event.

While she may have pleased her network bosses with her blonde bimbo disposition, Kruger has alienated many viewers in the process. "

Re:worst coverage ever of any olympics Reply to this message
Re Griggs - after the 100th replay of Phelp's race where he won by 1/100 of a second - said this of the Serbian swimmer's protest;-

"Can you imagine the uproar if the protest was upheld!"

Well Johanna - the Serbian had good reason to question the result. After the last turn, Phelps was outside the top 3 and then MIRACULOUSLY sprinted to the finishing line to not only win Gold but once again break the world record!

So the Serbian's had the RIGHT to protest AND if it was confirmed that Phelps came SECOND - then of course Phelps could protest that and so on until an independent board examines the videos, analyses the drug tests of ALL swimmers and THEN made a final decision.

I was most disappointed that you and Sandy Roberts flippantly dismiised the Serbians protests.

I had hoped that Phelps would have come second - cos this young man is gonna need a lesson in humility and graciousness!

The sheer arrogance of the man was breathtaking! His head has no inflated so much that they now match the size of those ears!!!

C'mon IOC - are you drug testing any of the medallists at these games??? The Vietnamese gymnast you disqualified was never in the running for a medal! The 13 yo Chinese girls were the ones to be wary of!

Oops - my apologies. The Chinese gymnasts aren't on drugs. They are just UNDER AGE!!! Just an admin error I'm sure!

Is it any wonder most of us were over these games even before the opening ceremony!

Sad thing is that Nine will be just as bad - probably worse - in 2012!

Looking forward to the closing ceremony! I hear London is gonna have David Beckham kick a football into the stands while the mayor waves a flag around!!!!

What a tempting tease for the London games!

On that point, we're in agreement :-) I've watched very little of Yum Cha because the people on the panel seemed unprepared and even ill at ease. They also seemed to think it necessary to make everything funny, so whenever someone tried to talk sensible sport they interrupted with smart comments and gales of laughter. Possible aspiring to the Roy and HG standard but certainly not getting there.

It's not my problem at all.

Probably one of the biggest failures for Seven would be the Yum Cha show. They tried to make it light and funny and brought in Sonia K to have those dumb blonde gags. But it pales in comparison to the Roy and G verison.

mmm --well, regarding the fact that you didn't have lofty expectations, maybe that's your problem. From the messages, it's clear the majority of us had expectations of a quality product and are objecting to receiving second rate goods instead.

Re:worst coverage ever of any olympics Reply to this message
glugglug@y7mail.com - you are very stupid.

I have told you time and time again that I have no association with Seven. I don't even work in that industry.

It seems like if your not complaining, your opinion is not valid.

I have been critical of Seven performance. I made mention of it regarding the shafting of Basketball at various times.

I have stated clearly that I never had the lofty expectations that some has regarding the coverage and perhaps more realist to what actually happened.

I have also made suggestions how Seven might like to improve the service.

The only thing I have been guilty of is being over-opinionated and I make no apology for that either. Afterall this is a forum with active debate takes place from both sides of the argument can be presentated.

Re:worst coverage ever of any olympics Reply to this message
icat, we're not as stupid as you think. You'd better get out your dictionary and look up the difference between 'active' and 'passive'. There's a difference between not complaining (which is an example of being passive) and leaping to the defence of Channel 7 every time someone mentions an issue (which is an example of being active). You are extremely active in the interests of Channel 7. Maybe you should also look up 'subtlety' and try to practise it.
