| The whole point is that people are sick of being confined to events involving Australians and if you can't pick that up from the myriad of messages bombarding this site you need to go back to your Channel 7 executive mates and rethink. |

| Not sure why your whinging. These are Australians going for medals? What other coverage is happening at the moment that Australia has a chance for a medal? |

| Totally awash with swimming - I feel seasick whenever I look at the telly. Channel 7 obviously sat down and planned to show only sports featuring Australians. Well I'd like to see some other Olympic sports and am turning over to SBS more and more frequently to do so. |

I turned on the TV an hour ago - and it was that wretched Yum Cha again!
I naively thought we would be spared this piece of krap on the weekends - but NOOOO!
So I decided to watch videohits on TEN and enjoyed Coldplay for a bit.
Yep - just like SEVEN - I watched the AFL footy last night instead of the Olympics, and watched music videos instead of the Olympics again this morning!
And SEVEN - I am sure millions of us have already made note not to shop at Harvey Norman, Telstra, Qantas or bother to watch the next DWTS, City Homicide, Home and AWay, Sunrise, Packed to the rafters, the outdoor room etc.
I've seen enough of these shows already - during something you call the Olympics???
And the other commercial stations shouldn't bother gloating - many of us are p1ssed off with you too!
I also won't be watching DWTS, Sunrise, |

As for the woeful coverage...
From the top of the hour, only live event being shown is the 20km walk. Yes, a drawn-out race.
We've had 3 ad-breaks, 10 minutes of repeat coverage, 3 minutes of last night's hockey.
In the mean time, a host of other events are running live with no mention of any of them.
Today's schedule:

Forgot to add re their ratings... it still does not excuse the awful coverage of sports in general.
I encourage you to grab a stopwatch, some pen and paper, and mark down the times of each of the following, then rank them in order.
1) Commercials
2) Olympics montage before/after
3) Station promos
4) Studio chatter
5) "Live" events
6) Replays of earlier events
7) News and results summaries
8) Other non-relevant footage such as interviewing locals, the architecture, interviewing fans/family, stock footage of venues, etc.
Then look for proper live coverage of events. |

It was pretty much a "no brainer" that their ratings would skyrocket, what with the exclusive broadcast rights and annexing of all the popular events and any other event that Aussies are taking part in.
SBS are providing much better, balanced, and complete coverage of events, but due to the embargo on what they can show, are stuck to events where other nations are competing.
For the sports fan, at least SBS are showing full games. |

TV ratings are huge - over 4 million Australians watch the Olympics telecast every night.
The commentary may be amateurish, but only people with esoteric interests can pick up many of the gaffes.
This telecast, and the previous 5 at least, are a dumbed down version of an international sporting carnival aimed solely to attract the masses, who BTW, believe that Australian Idol, Big Brother, and Dancing with the Stars is entertaining and worthwhile viewing
Channel 7 are responding to the demand of the majority - your beef is not with channel 7,, but with the masses who demand results and who really dont give two hoots about the sports themselves |

I too want to voice my disappointment at the quality of the 7 Network's coverage of the Olympic Games. It all started so badly when Bruce McAvaney & Sonia Kruger opened with commentary between adds for the opening ceremony, uninformed, no research and comments totally inappropriate especially by Kruger filled the two or three minutes between the six minutes of adds.
Every day my disappointment starts at 6am where each morning I convince myself that today will be better, it begins with âThe Three Stoogesâ plus Barretta, it could start earlier or heaven forbid be 24hrs but instead 7 has to squeeze out more revenue by running those stupid infomercials.
Alas Moe (Nat), Larry (Kosh) & Curly (Mel) torture me for the next three hours with embarrassing questions to athlete's family they have corralled in the studio, idiot attempts to be humorous and the only moment of clarity comes when Jodie Henry & Michael Klim are given half an opportunity to speak, usually Kosh or Mel have asked yet another stupid question or interrupted with a glib comment before they have finished.
I foolishly wonder where the âexpertsâ from the other Olympic events that have been competing all week are, but quickly slap myself back to reality, Australia has no competitors in any other event except swimming and we really only have one swimmer now, the âbeautiful, bankable, irresistible, gorgeousâ Stephanie Rice is our only swimmer to win a gold medal..... isn't she!
Then comes the children's show (what the!!!!!) and Yum Char follows and one set of three stooges is replaced by another, only this time Sonia Kruger is not only a stooge she is genuinely dumb, asks the most ridiculous questions and is constantly on the verge of a smarmy sexual innuendo, Rebecca Wilson you should be ashamed and should know better, Andrew Dado should stick to children's books.
Part two below |

PART TWO
Then sometime after this we start with the repeats of the repeats which repeat the repeats we have already seen, generally all swimming, is Michael Phelps now an Aussie, you would think so given the coverage he has received.
Today Australia's women's basketball game did not rate even a highlight, no replay no coverage, the rifle shooting medal, no coverage, no boxing, though we have managed to get some athletics between the swimming.
SHAME, SHAME, SHAME Channel 7, your unprofessional presentation of this wonderful and historic event is disgraceful and an embarrassment.
You should be banned from ever having the rights again and every Australian should write to the IOC to complain.
PS Telstra, Macas, Ford you have done your products no favours by literally buying into this farce. |

Surely the Australian TV stations could agree to work together at presenting the Olympics to the Australian public, so we all get to see a decent portion of the sports we are interested in - not just 2 to 5 minutes!
Each station has journalists that come from unique backgrounds and have specialised knowledge. It has been well demonstrated by SBS, that it can be done this time. So lets appeal to the 5 stations to work together and "in the spirit of the Olympics" agree to bring us a comprehensive coverage of all Australians competing.
And if negotiations are not going well, think back to all of the friends & families that have given up so much to help our athletes get to this level of competition. Not all families can find the money, to travel abroad or take the time away from their jobs. SADLY, most of these people have missed out on seeing their sons & daughters, brothers & sisters, fathers & mothers, that they are so proud of, compete in 2008. |

<<< the effort from Ch.7 is very amateurish indeed. They seem to have approached the Olympics not as a sporting event but as another 'lifestyle' program aimed at the lowest common denominator of viewer >>>
**
Spot on. I get the feeling that for these olympics they are targeting the 'Today Tonight' viewers.
7 might beable to pull the wool over their eyes but they seem to think the rest of the population can be duped into thinking their coverage is extensive an Live.
20 years ago they couldve got away with it but the public are more on the ball these days, plus theres this thing they call the internet or interweb or t'tinternet or something where people can access news and results thus making the world more accessible and 'smaller'. Therefore its your responsibility as the official broadcaster to get your act together and move with the times.
Roll on 2012 with ch9 and Foxtel and we will see just what these games couldve been like to watch. |

The farcical state of broadcasting in this nation is making us the laughing stock.
Honestly, despite our proximity to, and affinity with our biggest trading partner, we are subject to an appallingly low standard of coverage. Granted it's a commercial station trying to meet its obligations, but I have the urge to put pen to paper and write a strongly worded letter. To whom, perhaps that's what this open forum is for.
Is there an ombudsman who can accept these complaints? An MP or does it have to go to our local rep?
I welcome some suggestions. |
