| Exactly my point about it being so deep rooted into their Psyche. Comparing Australia culture to the cultures of the East is not something I would be doing. Barbecues, Footy, Stubbies, Surfing, going to the pub etc....Hardly true culture now is it. |

True, but the Aussi culture is only 200 years compared to 5,000+.
Do anything for that many generations and I'm sure any geneticist will tell you the offspring become pre-disposed. |

| Bit of a weak comparison though. Aussies and their drinking culture to the Psyche of the Chinese. Also the Psyche of the people from such a cosmopolitan city like Shanghai is very different to other parts of China. |

| This happens in all cultures, for example, Assies and drinking. Not everyone does it but it IS part of the culture. |

| Mate I don't agree with a lot of the things that they do and a lot of the ways they think but it is so deep rooted into their psyche that the average "Jo" has little or no choice than to think and do the way they do. |

Exactly sushiboy, most of the worlds prejudices are spawned from peoples lack of understand. Not the touchy feely understanding but the 'they do this because...' understanding.
I'm going back to Shanghai to live with my in-laws for a couple of months next year and while I don't agree with everything that they do it is usually because I don't fully understand why.
An example of this which happened to me on the first trip over 10 years ago was:
Every time you eat you are continually asked to have more by the host. Needless to say with my appetite and where I grew up I ended up eating way too much. They didn't say anything but they keep reminding my wife. I found out later that they expect you to say no because that is what they consider good manners. What I did was extremely rude.
Maybe not the best example of what we are talking about but it does show how easy different cultures can offend... |

| The ignorance of the people on these boards astounds me. No wonder a lot of people in countries outside Australia think we are bigots. Go live in the country for a few years, learn about its culture as much as you can, learn the language and learn about the people and the reasons they think the way they do. Then come back and make a comment. |

Good try but he's Vietnamese...kinger ;-)
The list...
Zhang Xi Tau
Zhao Ben Shan
Law Kar Ying
Kenny Bee
Chiu Man Cheuk
Leslie Cheung
Anita Yuen
Andy Hui
bla bla bla bla...you might as well try and list every 'western' comedian, impossible.
Just like the west they range from film, tv and standup. Buy why did you want to know? Are you interested in their 'type' of humour?
Again I reiterate, making blanket assumptions like 'they don't have comedians' just makes you look ignorant. lmao! |

Ammmatt, you know most people wouldn't call themselves a bigot in public but you've done a pretty good job so far.
Blanket statements like yours do the world no good no matter the motivation. Now all you've done is give justification to Chinese people (in this case) to have the same view of Australians and I, for one, resent this. |

"Since the 1988 ratification of the UN Convention Against Torture by China, 69 Tibetans are recorded as having died as a result of torture in Chinese prisons. Human rights groups have confirmed by name over 700 Tibetan political prisoners in Tibet, many of them detained without charge or trial."
Also, as many as 200,000 tibetans are unaacounted for and listed as 'missing' in PRC's own census reports since the start of the great leap forward. Not sure what 22 you are referring to there sophia.. |

I agree with brettnshirley. brettnshirley wrote that "its not just the Olympics but many other topics which I dare not speak of here as it is politically incorrect and too emotional for some."
The fact is that the Beijing Games has been 'politicalised' for years, with the peak being torch relay. That is the point. We should not have mixed sports with politics from the very beginning. Different people have different views on such things as Tibet issue and human rights but unfortunately our newspapers always report one side of the story, and for years gradually build up much of the antichinese emotion here. They said several hundreds Tibetan died in Tibet but actually only 22 local innocent people died, most of them were Han Chinese. They said Chinese toys were dangeous but they did not say those toys were most designed by USA. They said two seniors were sent to labour camp but they did not say these two seniors seriouly violated local law. I believe China is not perfect country. For sure China has heaps of problem. But who can tell me that Australia is perfect?
Talking about fakery, I believe either Chinese or Aussies (they faked the instrument playing in 2000) had tried their best to present a good performance. They had no intention to 'cheat' tv watchers. You may do not agree the way they did the job but in fact most outdoor events in the world do the same way, especially in such important event as Olympics, just for safe, for perfection. We should views things positively. |

I think there is nothing for either girl to be upset about. Both played their part of their countries biggest public performance. Also, how many girls do you think would have auditioned? I would guess thousands.
And I think they will remember the following positive over any negative.
"Hey, I sung the song at the Beijing Olympics"
or
"Hey, I performed the song at the Beijing Olympics"
Both, IMO would be over the moon just to be included and would see it as an honor not a right. |

Pity they didn't show the real young lass who did the singing, but implemented a body double who was considered "cuter".
It's kinda sad that she was rejected because she wasn't "pretty" enough, poor kid.
Apart from that - who really gives a toss. |
