[after all it took GOD six days to create the world]
That's only according to the christians. But for the rest of the world, there is no such thing as that particular entity. |

[Last time I looked the Paralympians were highly trained, dedicatd, elite athletes representing their country by competing in the Olympic Games for medals.]
They weren't competing in the olympic games. It is called paralympics. It is fine to represent their country in that event. They have their own dedicated carnival. And the olympic people have theirs. Why come and interfere with other people's established carnival? They have their own carnival......so just keep it like that. |

Give China a chance,
After reading all the comments, some are true, some are rubbish, I am ashamed of some of you.
China has open their doors for us, by hosting the Olympics and by showing us a part of their country.
This might be the beginning of a new China,
I know all about (not all of it of-course) the horrors and
secrets what the media told us, but maybe, maybe there will be an end to all of this, give it a chance, it won`t be happening overnight (after all it took GOD six days to create the world).
And if I am wrong about China, well nothing is lost there.
BUT, if I am right, how beautiful will the world look then.

You really don't get it, tmc4, do you?
Let me help you, as you seem to have the infirmity of under-developed knoweledge leading to the handicap of poor understanding which gives you the disability of restricted social skills.
Using the word 'normal' for the Olympics for abled-bodied athletes implies the word 'abnormal' or 'subnormal' for the games for athletes with disabilities. This will always be considered a dire insult by those athletes, their associates and thinking people.
To protest that the Paralympic tally be kept separate implies segregation, harking back to a time when disabled relatives were hidden away as a matter of shame or locked in institutions because of meaningless fear.
So if the Paral(lel Oly)mpics (as in equal, being alongside, in tandem, neither lesser nor more) is something else, would you kindly tell us exactly what that someting else is?
Last time I looked the Paralympians were highly trained, dedicatd, elite athletes representing their country by competing in the Olympic Games for medals.
Now then, tmc4, there is no reason tallies can't be reported both separately to compare with past achievements, and as an aggregrate to celebrate the achievements of all our athletes. |

| What I'm saying is that the paralympic event should be separate from the normal olympic event. They can have their own medal tally. This is not to go against physically impaired people. It is to make it clear that olympics is olympics, and paralympics is something else. |

| I'm of the belief that the paralympics should be run and won at the same time as the olympics. Extend it from 2 weeks to 3 weeks if they have too. Then not only will it give disabled people some fame and a name, but will also draw alot of inspirational stories from the games. I mean, don't they always say, the olympic spirit etc with all the heart aches of getting to the games to compete... |

| I suppose ppl with disabilities should be grateful TMC4 has given his okay for them to have their Games and to be the recipients of his boundless generosity. (Tmc4, that was sarcasm, btw.) |

And in what context do you use the term 'normal'?
Are you suggesting people with disabilities are abnormal? |

| Paralympics ..... fine, and fair enough. But keep their medal tally separate/isolated from the normal summer olympics tally. |

hardly_helpful: "when do these start?
how many locals will turn up to watch them?"
6th Sept is opening ceremony, competition begins the following day.
Sadly, having witnessed first hand how Asian cultures treat their disabled, I would hope for the athletes' sakes it would be well attended. However, for many of us who have recently visited any major SE Asian city, apart from Singapore, what types of facilities (parking spaces, wheelchair access, etc) are available to a disabled person.
Sadly, there is still an underlying culture of shame in their society if a family member is disabled. Hopefully it has evolved over the years since I was last in the region. |

Want a chip to go on your other shoulder? It may just give you a more balanced view of the world. There is more to medal tallies than population but you know that, don't you? |

nope, der_uber_ *** er :)
coz the athletes are not only ppl with paraplegia (an impairment in motor and/or sensory function of the lower extremities).
"The name comes from the Parallel Olympics, which was shortened to paralympics."

I believe it's called Paralympics from the words Parallel Olympics, i.e. running parallel to the other Olympics.
***********
I'm fairly certain they got the name from Paraplegic, abbreviated to Paralympics. |

| When do the para's start? I went to a day of it in Sydney and had a great time. Watched the wheelchair girls beat Holland (if memory serves). I prefer wheelchair basketball to able bodied basketball. I also love wheelchair rugby. Those guys are insane. |

Fantasic story
I dont think ive heard a bad word about our paralympians to date
Ive seen the Blind Football on a few occasions and loved it and I think our Swimmers deserve alot more recognition then their non-Paralympic counterparts |

One of my friends, who just happens to be a wheelie, did go skydiving, damned if I have the guts to do that!
I believe it's called Paralympics from the words Parallel Olympics, i.e. running parallel to the other Olympics.
I had the honour to meet a Bronze Medallist a few years ago.
As a talented young footballer (i.e. soccer, with a career ahead of him) he broke his his leg on the pitch, then there were complications during recovery. I believe gangrene or something set in under the plaster-caste. His leg had to be amputated.
After his recovery, he came back to sport and competed with great success in many international meets in the running events.
I absolutely will be watching these games live on ABC. |
