Re:Why ? Reply to this message
I heard that in the good old days, the AFL slogan for Tasmania was "MMMMMMMM, legal bumsex"
---
Actually, this thread is perfect for the AFL's slogan for Tassie - every time they get told Tassie must have a team, they reply 'why'?

Personally, I thought the 'sport of kings' was incestual sex, genocide and tax free living!

And if the Catholic church is anything to go by, the 'game they play in Heaven' is not something I'd want to participate in! (Oddly enough, it's similar to the sport of kings - just replace the word incestual with pre-pubescent!).

Re:Why ? Reply to this message
Most sports have their egotistical catch phrases.

Rugby is the 'game they play in heaven', Racing is the 'sport of kings' etc. the 'greatest game of all' is just a load of bollocks.

I love league, but talking it up as the 'greatest game of all' is WAY over the top.

I think a great way to attract the crowds to GC United games would be to give out free beach balls.

Re:Why ? Reply to this message
I think it is funny as fk that the Gold Coast Utd are not getting crowds. Before they started their owner, the seriously fked up Clive Palmer, bragged that not only would they go undefeated to win the A-league in their first season, but that they'd also bring a lot of $$$ to other clubs as a result of the massive crowds they'd attract everywhere they played!

They are struggling big time, even though they are winning games. The Titans (and the forthcoming AFL side) will not be in the least bit concerned about the 'inevitable take over by (don't call it) soccer'! :P

Re:Why ? Reply to this message
Yes, Michael Searle and the titans must be quivering in their boots to realize that the GCU soccer team got a massive 4000 spectators to a home game yesterday esp considering GCU are top of the table.
Dont know why chan 9 doesnt replay the matches on FTA TV on Sunday morning or early Sunday pm, when the Footy show and ESL matches used to be shown through the season.

Re:Why ? Reply to this message
TV doesn't show 'international' rugby league because, outside of 3 nations, the quality is about as good as a reserve grade QLD Cup fixture!

Wildfire, wtf are you on about? Cricket gone? in what way?

Storm got minimal press in Melbourne? Buy a lot of Melbourne papers do we? They got front, back and middle pages.

Comparing cricket and rugby league to the travesty that is basketball is insane!

Re:Why ? Reply to this message
Why wont they show the greatest game of all ?
First of all define "greatest".
Secondly, money rules. The rights to all sports being televised is all about who pays the most for them, just like the housing market, the stock market and everything worth any money.
If a game or sport is worth buying the rights to then someone will buy it, (Foxtel, freetoair etc) then they will televise it. It would seem they havent recognised your definition of greatest, and prefer to televise these other sports as they will get more money from the "less great" sports. Personally I am way over RL anyway but to watch boring international games of it would bore me to distraction compared to Gridiron, US Baseball and world class soccer (football). Even if a Kiwi v Australia game was free to go and watch and in my home town I still wouldnt go.
Example, compare the NRL grandfinal to the AFL Grandfinal. Melbourne Storm won the NRL grandfinal and got minimal press even in Melbourne.
Unless the powers that be invest in some real decisions to make NRL a great game again, it will end up like Australian Cricket or the NBL. Who the hell cares.
As a final word, think on this ... The Sydney Kings won 4 of their last 5 grandfinals (playoffs) and went out of the competition, Souths Dragons went from last to winning the playoffs the following year, and ended up out of the competition. I am a lifelong basketball fan and couldnt tell you who is playing or who is leading the stats. What chance sponsorship.
Who cares about basketball you ask?
There but for the sponsorship deal go the NRL unless they do something. In other words, the NRL is heading for the same fate unless they do something. Soccer and AFL will take over.
Rugby Union = gone
cricket = gone
Basketball = gone
NRL ?

Re:Why ? Reply to this message
If you want to see a replay of the Kiwi-Tonga game you can download it at acrossthetasman.com.

You will have to sign up though. Then head to the rugby league (International)section.

Good site if you miss any regular season games too and you want to catch up in the way of a download.

Rotorua? I would suggest that their facilities would be equal to, if not above, what is in place at most Q-Cup facilities.

Re:Why ? Reply to this message
Kiwis played against Tonga in Rotorua. I'm not an expert on broadcasting, but I'd bet their grounds and tv facilities there aren't up to scratch.

The proper games don't start til next weekend anyway.
