IT is a good rule, but the problem is the interpretation of the rule. In both cases, the Cowboys winger had eyes only for the ball, leapt, but was beaten by the Dogs winger. Williams , realizing he was beaten midair, grabbed the Doggie around the chest to stop him running off.
Both cases should have been play on.
The difference when the Cowboy caught the ball was that he was the attacking player going for the try line, and the rules have to allow the defender to stop the guy from getting a try.
All 3 should have been play on, but Maxwell was a jerk on a mission last night. Ben Harris got hooked by his coach at the 60 minute mark. Maxwell should have been hooked at the 10 minute mark

As in the case of Morris contesting against Williams last night.
Im not sure about the conspiracy theory revolving around Brisbane and the Doggies though.
Refs tend to be swayeed by the manner in which the defending player lands or falls too. If it looks remotely like hes been tapped mid air and falls even close to the horizontal then theres a good chance the whistle will be blown.

As Gus said, the rule was brought in to stop people attacking the legs of a player and endangering them in the process. I think in all instances where it is clear that they are contesting for the ball and not playing the man, it should be play on.

I watched the game last night between the Bulldogs and the Cowboys. I was dissappointed in the Referee awarding the Bulldogs 2 pENALTIES for taclking a player who was off the ground and not attepting to go for the ball. The same could be have been awarded to the Cowboys when the same two players were near the Bulldogs tryline once again. Only this time it was the Cowboys who were on the recieving end of a NO TRY. The Cowboys player was definetly off the ground and the Bulldogs player was not even looking at the ball. NO PENALTY given. I am not a big fan of either club but would like to see the Referees get it right. I am sure the Referees have a hard job but where are the Touch Judges? Maybe the League Hierachy want a Brisbane V Bulldogs grand Final this year as both teams are getting a fairer go than others. Well what do others think?
