Watmough fired up by 'can't tackle' jibe
AAP - June 17, 2009, 6:14 pm
Anthony Watmough has a point to prove to the critics who believe he is a liability in State of Origin football.
Recalled to the Blues side for the first time since 2005, Watmough is determined to show why he has been good enough to play for Australia yet remarkably overlooked by NSW in recent years.
The 25-year-old Manly second-rower has been among the game's best backrowers the past three seasons but unable to crack the NSW side.
He was 18th man for Origin I in Melbourne, but said it was more like "24th man" after two players had already dropped out of the side.
It was his Origin I snubbing three weeks ago that finally got the better of Watmough and he pursued answers through Manly coach Des Hasler as to why he was left out of the side.
The answer he got was simple and brutal: "You can't tackle."
"I've got an idea (why I've been overlooked)," said Watmough on Wednesday.
"I heard I can't tackle is one thing.
Should we QLDR's be worried about firing up this woman basher? |

| Watmough only goes for the good lookers, so that plan would not work with the Qld players |

| Maybe if Bellamy can convince Watmough all the QLDers are women he will show more aggression in defence. |

| matbe shed just launch herself straight at their gonads without being chucked. If you had to put up with Watmough putting the word on you, youd be looking for an alternative too. |

As I've said, he has the most line breaks of all forwards this year. I admit, the guy can get through a gap and as long as you've got a Hayne or Gidley backing up, he'll set up a try.
But he has one of the worst missed tackles stat of the forwards and gives away too many dumb penalties. He and Gallen will give 5 away between them and cost 3 tries as a result.
Mark my words. Gallen gave 3 last year in Game 3 and 1 try came from one of them immediately. Another soon after the field position battle was compromised.
Watmough should not be replaced by Hindmarsh. Hindmarsh should be in the pack with Creagh & O'Donnell at lock. Then Stewart or Laffranchi take the bench spot, with 2 bench props and Wing.
The 4 Prop thing nearly won us the game after we played like cr@p. Why they walked away from that to include Watmough defies belief. Like picking Barrett for 6. Crazy. |

WATMOUGH??
NSW cant stop the QLD backs and now they wont stop the QLD forwards.
Only thing Watmough has ever stopped is a sliding door..And he still needed to use his girlfriends head to do that .
Real tough.. |

His runs are a little tired these days, but he can pop a pass.
We are short one prop, and he is the one second rower who can defend right in the guts, and still belt the big blokes and move laterally to get the quick blokes.
Plus he goes alright at the start, remember a few years back he whacked petero in the chops twice in the first 10 minutes and it kept Petero quiet till he had his 2nd stint. |

For fu//cks sake, im a Manly supporter but Watmough and Stewart are the wrong options. Neither have the potency to break the Qld line and while Stewart will do his share of work defensively even he wont get the job done like Hindmarsh over a full 80 mins.
B(r)etty bloody White wouldve been more effective than Watmough and he was stamped never to play origin again. |

| Dont get me wrong, I want QLD to win as much as the next Cane Toad, but Hindmarsh is still the best backrower going around. He should be in the Blooze team and the Aust team. |

| If Bozo Fulton doesn't get punted soon, we might end up with the whole Manly team wearing the blue jumper in the very near future. |

You're as confused as me foggy. How they could pick Watmough ahead of Hindmarsh has me baffled. An endurance athlete like Hindmarsh gives his side one more replacement even in SOO. Beside the fact he can run for the full 80 mins he is like having an extra defender whereas stats published at the weekend showed Watmough is the 2nd worst for falling off tackles and ineffective ones.
I ask the question, will the selectors be dropped if NSW lose this series?? |

Why dont they pick Hindmarsh anymore. Ffs, last nights game he made 59 tackles . He always chases everything and can offload and usually outackles everyone. Remember Larson and Gillie etc for QLD? Not the greatest players but always picked for their state and always performed well
. If Hindy were a Qlander he would be rewarded with an Origin jersey until he stopped performing , as with Petro and Price.
