Wayne Bennett is an absolute friggin myth
Nothing mythological about Bennett. At season's start he promised consistency, nothing more and he delivered, picking up the minor premiership.
He had a look at the stock he had to work with and saw mediocrity, not one superstar, gamebreaker, strike player in the herd. There was no Inglis or Slater, Hayne, Lockyer, Hodges, Khunt, Folau, Patten, Kimmorley or anyone else that could turn a game in an instant. In fact, if you go through Saints one to thirteen how many would make first grade in the remaining teams in the playoffs? Possibly two or three.
Bennett had to come up with a style of play to suit his team and did so quite successfully, outsmarting all other coaches until round 23 when lowly Canberra twigged that Saints could be beaten. Who's the Canberra coach?? Not sure but he is one step ahead of the others to come up with plan to flatten Saints.
No mate, Bennett is no myth, he's the real deal.
For next year he needs a fullback, centre, prop and a retirement village for Wendell. |
