So now compare the percentage of power reduction of already very high power vehicles-

to the percentage of increase in fuel Efficiency.

Cant see the problem.

Holden REDUCES POWER in Commodore Reply to this message
Holden has knocked 10kW of power off its V8 Commodore in an effort to save some fuel.

Holden AFM - Active Fuel Management - saves fuel at the expense of performance.
GM Holden has cut the power of some of its V8 Commodores to save more fuel.

The decrease - the first time in decades that a new V8 Commodore has come out with less power - is the result of adding engine-management technology that saves up to a litre of fuel every 100km.

Hot on the heels of its decision to cut V6 engine output on low-end Commodores by 5kW to save fuel, Holden has sliced 10kW from the power of its V8 Commodores fitted with an automatic gearbox to accommodate the Active Fuel Management technology.

The system, also known as cylinder deactivation or displacement-on-demand, monitors the engine's load and can shut down four of the eight cylinders for more economical driving at cruising speeds.

Holden was eager to promote the imminent arrival of AFM when it was unveiled at the 2008 Sydney motor show, but at the time there was no mention of the associated power drop, which also impacts performance - one of the main reasons people buy a V8. Only over the Christmas/New Year period did Holden publish the reduced power figures in the V8 Commodore's specifications on its public website.

The V8 Commodore variants fitted with AFM - including auto versions of the SS, SS-V, Calais, Calais V, Ute, Statesman, Caprice and Sportwagon models - drop from 270kW to 260kW and from 530Nm to 517Nm.

Even though, in the past, Holden has spruiked the benefits of an extra 5kW of power, the director of Holden's powertrain engineering, Ernie Tamburrini, believes customers will not notice the 10kW power loss.
