Pedrosa says he could have won Sachsenring showdown
Sunday, 19 July 2009
Front tyre problem blamed for Spaniardâs not being able to take victory.
Pedrosa: âI couldnât ride at the maximumâ
Dani Pedrosa took a praiseworthy podium at the Alice Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland on Sunday afternoon, following up his Laguna Seca victory with third place in the German race.
The Spaniard made one of the flying starts that have become his trademark with the Repsol Honda RC212V, having started from a lowly eighth on the grid. He was unable to take off out in front as he had done before crashing in 2008, but says that a race win was still a possibility.
âA podium is good, but I think that we could have won. We were strong enough to win, but I had a front tyre problem when I was going fast,â said the Spaniard on the same difficulty that forced Andrea Dovizioso out of the race.
âMy teammate seemed to have a big problem with it, so Iâm happy to have got on the podium, but anyway I thought that today we could have been faster.â
Pedrosa raced with a new Honda engine this weekend as the Japanese factory look to beef up their 2009 machine, and Sunday saw his most extensive run yet with the new motor. Reviewing his feeling with the latest novelty, he added that âwe have some experience now for the next round with the new spec.â
Pedrosa is currently fourth in the overall classification, 68 points behind leader Valentino Rossi. |

He continued, âOf course Iâm disappointed to lose another very close race, it is always sad but I know that we are capable of fighting with Valentino and considering his experience this is something I must be proud of. Second is important today and we still have a long way to go in this championship.â

Lorenzo stays cool after close defeat
Sunday, 19 July 2009
Like in Catalunya Fiat Yamahaâs Jorge Lorenzo lost out to colleague Valentino Rossi right at the death in Germany, but was still pleased with his performance.
Lorenzo on second in Germany
Another second place for Jorge Lorenzo at round nine of the 2009 MotoGP World Championship kept the Spaniard in the title hunt in his second premier class season, although he had to stay positive having missed out by just 0.099s to team-mate Valentino Rossi.
Another superb battle between the pair at the Sachsenring ultimately ended in another win for the more experienced Italian who extended his standings lead to 14 points.
Lorenzo nonetheless continued his excellent run of podium finishes, with his fourth second place in the last five rounds, even if he was not quite fast enough to catch his illustrious Italian team-mate in the dash to the line, having got close to Rossi on the final corner.
Afterwards Lorenzo stated, âLike at Montmeló we lost the battle, but itâs not a problem. I think we have to be happy because we are always towards the top and we are improving. It was a very hard race because this track is quite slow and you have to push your body to the maximum, so to keep with the pace of Valentino was difficult. It was hard to get past him because he was braking so hard and so late.â
He continued, âOf course Iâm disappointed to lose another very close race, it is always sad but I know that we are capable of fighting with Valentino and considering his experience this is something I must be proud of. Second is important today and we still have a long way to go in this championship.â |

Reviewing the race in depth with motogp.com, Stoner explained, âAt the beginning I thought I was going to be dropped pretty quickly because the bike didnât feel too good in the first couple of laps. So I decided to hit the front as soon as I could, if nothing else to just try and hold everybody else up and try to stay in there with a shout. Then I started to lose the front end a few too many times so after the Laguna Seca qualifying crash and a few front end losses this weekend I thought it was better to play it safe and just bring it home.â
He continued, âJorge and Valentino came past and then the front started to feel better, with a lighter fuel load so I started to push a bit harder, started to catch them and then I made a mistake. Then Dani had one unbelievable lap where he went half a second quicker than any of his other laps just about and then he came past me. I then started struggling on the left hand side of the tyre and lost the rear slightly at the bottom of the hill, but I was lucky enough to pull it up before I hit the gravel trap.â
Summarising the way things had gone, Stoner added, âI was pretty happy with the race to be honest, considering the way things have been going lately. Itâs the first time I feel like I have actually been involved in something for a while and if I hadnât made that problem with the rear I might have been able to dig deep enough to catch Valentino and Jorge.â |

Stoner happy with Sachsenring race
Monday, 20 July 2009
Ducatiâs Casey Stoner finished the ninth race of the year in better shape than at recent rounds and felt that he might have challenged for victory had he not experienced a rear end issue.
Although Casey Stoner lost points to Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo in the 2009 MotoGP title fight in Germany the Australian rider appeared to be in better physical shape at the end of the demanding 30-lap Sachsenring contest.
The Ducati Marlboro rider held the lead for ten laps in the middle of the race and cited a rear tyre issue, rather than his recent physical weakness, as the reason for dropping away in the final stages. Stoner eventually crossed the finishing line 10 seconds behind winner Rossi and was seven seconds off the final podium position, which was secured by a resurgent Dani Pedrosa.
