Fifteenth-placed Hayden had less to lose than his teammate, with no title challenge on which to focus. He was slightly less convinced as to whether to run the wet tyre risk, but in the end made the final call despite having been informed that every other rider on the grid would be on slicks.
âWe agreed on it together with the team but it was my shout, I thought âletâs try and be a hero here!â The tyre was pretty much destroyed after seven or eight laps but there was no point coming in to pit and it came apart five laps from the end. To be honest itâs amazing how it held together for that long! I donât want to say it was a mistake; it was just a gamble that didnât pay off and weâll learn from itâ lamented the American.
The brave decision had come after the initial sighting lap, during which both riders had expressed concerns over a lack of grip.
Ah gee so does this mean Ducati are not dumb, just the rider(s)?
Hey nikki can you let me know whether Hayden is dumb or just taking a bamble?
Must break nikki's heart that Stoner supported the decision of Haydens and not just blame him for the choice.
That answers nikki's question to why their lap times were way down at the end, their tyres were pretty much destroyed regardless of how much water was on the track.
Well done Hayden and Stoner, they took a gamble against the teams, it did not pay off but they stand by their decision even though Stoner had more to lose over it
Over to you dumber, oops i mean nikki! :P |

Ducati team boss Livio Suppo said he told Stoner and Hayden they were making the wrong choice.
"We actually informed both riders that all the other guys were on slicks and that we thought it was the right choice but they were both adamant it was too dangerous and at the end of the day we have to trust their instinct in a tricky situation like that," Suppo said.
Stoner said while the track was damp, the expected downpour did not arrive.
"Everybody knows I've been struggling for the last few races in the dry so I was praying for the rain to come today," he said.
"Every single lap we were out there it threatened to pour down and we were very close to having the perfect situation.
"Unfortunately, even though it got heavier, it didn't come soon enough and our tyres were destroyed so it ended up being the wrong decision.
"For us, in our current situation, I still think it was a risk worth taking because it could have worked out fantastically but obviously we're disappointed it didn't.
"I'm sorry for the team because they've done a great job to give me a bike capable of winning races at every circuit we've been to lately, even though for one reason or another I haven't been able to get the best out of it.
"I'm looking forward to a break now and hopefully we come back a little bit stronger at Brno (in the Czech Republic)." |

Stoner pays for ignoring MotoGP advice
AAP - July 27, 2009, 1:58 pm

Australian MotoGP star Casey Stoner has paid a heavy penalty for ignoring team advice in the British Grand Prix.
The former world champion admitted he and teammate Nicky Hayden had made the wrong decision when they decided to start the race on wet tyres under gloomy skies.
All their rivals went out on slicks but the Ducati pair gambled on rain, which never came.
Consequently, Stoner finished 14th - his worst result in 15 races - and Hayden 15th. |

Yeah trash's estimate is way over the mark and I'd say that it would usually equate to around half to a full lap if the change was at half race distance..
What were Ducati thinking?-
Or were they praying instead? |

| I would say coming into the pits and changing bikes, would take about the same time as any car. About 25 to 30 secs , and then the warmup lap, whick is generally only a couple of seconds slower at most |

Anyone know how long a pitstop for the bike change takes?
plus there's the lap or so to warm it up to race pace of course. |

For Ducati's gamble to pay off they would have thought they'd win by not making a bike change.
Long odds. |

Getting upset on a simple questions nikki?
Like any racing it is a tatical decision, there was rain around and their technical crew would have taken a chance that more rain was coming. As you would have seen on the TV there was sections of the track that had rain falling. But it never got bad enough to go to wets. 'IF' the rain had got harder then Ducati would have been in the box seat. But as you saw they came last, well last of the riders who finished.
'and if it wasnt another casualty of the mental torture rossi can apply, stoners head sure as hell will be now afer being lapped by him...'
LOL any chance to kick Stoner hey nikki, you are so transparent!? Rossi fell off and finished well, Lorenzo DNF, tell me about the mental torture rossi applied. Funny how it's just about Stoner, though Hayden got lagged also? I think just around everyone lapped them.
Oh the mental torture Stoner must be going through!! LOL
