2007 MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner made it four different factories in the top four, heading the second row for home team Ducati Marlboro and lining up alongside Shanghai poleman Colin Edwards. Repsol Honda´s Nicky Hayden completes the second line of attack.

The leader of the BMW M Award for combined qualifying results, Jorge Lorenzo nonetheless starts from his lowest grid position since moving up to MotoGP. In seventh place at the top of row three, the Spaniard will have to storm through the field to try and catch Fiat Yamaha teammate Rossi. Heading into the first corner, he may also bash fairings with Tech 3 Yamaha´s James Toseland and San Carlo Honda Gresini´s Shinya Nakano, who join him in the eighth and ninth grid placings, respectively.

Rossi prepares for Mugello showdown with first pole of 2008
Saturday, 31 May 2008

Valentino Rossi ended his pole position drought as the sun shined on Mugello, taking the top spot for his home race.

The man with a perfect record of four stroke MotoGP victories at Mugello, Valentino Rossi will make his attempt at a seventh consecutive home win in Sunday´s Gran Premio d´Italia Alice from pole position. The five-time MotoGP World Champion was in inspired form as he negotiated his favourite circuit on the calendar, smashing the existing Saturday record by eight tenths of a second with a 1´48.130 lap.

For the rider who has seemingly done everything in the premier class, pole position signified a new milestone for the Fiat Yamaha rider. His first of the season and first with Bridgestone tyres, Rossi´s most recent top spot is also his fiftieth in the World Championship and keeps alive Yamaha´s dominant pole record thus far in 2008.

Rossi recorded his fastest lap with time to spare in the dry afternoon qualifying session, with no rider able to hang with the Italian favourite. Repsol Honda´s Dani Pedrosa came closest to dethroning the `King of Mugello´ with his final attempt, but fell just short with a time less than two-tenths of a second down on that of the current series leader.

Loris Capirossi completes the front row for the Sunday showdown, his first time on the frontline since joining Rizla Suzuki. Capirossi is the only rider on the grid besides Rossi to have won at Mugello, and will be gunning for his countryman when the lights go out.

Brivio warns rivals that Rossi run could be `typical´
Thursday, 22 May 2008

Fiat Yamaha boss Davide Brivio has stated that, when everything is working well, Valentino Rossi´s recent race results are `typical´ from the Italian.

Two victories from the most recent pair of races have put Valentino Rossi back on top of the MotoGP World Championship for the first time in a year and, with Jorge Lorenzo upholding his end of the bargain Fiat Yamaha now hold a comfortable lead in the team standings. A content Davide Brivio sent out a warning to the rest of the MotoGP riders after Le Mans, one that they will not want to hear heading to Mugello.

`When Rossi feels good on the bike, the tyre is working good and he can ride as he wants until the end of the race, then we can say that China and Le Mans are typical races,´ stated Brivio.

`I´m very proud to achieve this in five races, as it really shows how Yamaha have been competitive every weekend. This is a great sign of the efforts of all the race department, who identified a problem and were able to fix it.´

Rossi has won in Mugello on Aprilia, Honda and Yamaha machinery, and can make it three tyre manufacturers to whom he has given an Italian win should he cross the line first at the Gran Premio d´Italia Alice. To add to his perfect four-stroke record at the track with Michelin and lower cylinder category Dunlop success, the five-time MotoGP World Champion now has the chance to give Bridgestone their first Mugello victory.

`It´s important for Valentino to win in Mugello, after six years of victories and a new tyre manufacturer. We hope that we can continue like we have been in the past five races,´ said Brivio.

Re:ROSSI Reply to this message
Rossi targets Nieto record... and then Agostini
Thursday, 15 May 2008

With 89 wins under his belt in World Championship competition, Valentino Rossi is just one away from that of MotoGP Legend Angel Nieto.

Valentino Rossi arrives in Le Mans, the scene of the eponymous 1971 film starring his hero Steve McQueen, hoping to emulate another of his idols with a ninetieth Grand Prix victory.

The Fiat Yamaha rider is within just one win of equalling the career total of Angel Nieto, the second-highest number of race triumphs in the World Championship´s history. Rossi has a fine rapport with the MotoGP legend, but is out to equal the record this weekend at the Grand Prix Alice de France.

`Ninety wins is a great number,´ noted the Italian in the pre-race press conference. `In 2005 I caught Mike Hailwood, a legend, and now I´m very close to Angel who is also a good friend of mine. We´ll try to equal his record as soon as possible.´

It seems inevitable that Nieto will relinquish second place in the all-time standings to the current MotoGP star, leaving Rossi in pursuit of another legend -perhaps the most legendary of all- Giacomo Agostini. The 29 year-old is aiming first for Agostini´s premier class total, an achievable figure that could be reached this season.

`Ago´s record is 68 in the premier class, so that´s just five more than me. We have the record of 90 Grand Prix wins to aim for, then the 68 MotoGP wins.´

The all-time high water mark is 122 wins, also that of Agostini and something that will be achievable at the earliest in the final race of 2009... should Rossi win every race of this and a further 18-race season.

For the 122 mark, that will be 33 more than now, so it might be difficult... but not impossible,´ he grinned.
