It is questionable were some of these reporters get their information from. Salary is one thing but if they are marketable to make additional money then good luck to them. That type of money is nothing compared to USA and Europe.

The 35-year-old was also concerned the report could have implications on him and his family down the track, while driver manager Matt Cousins said he wouldn't be surprised if the Australian Taxation Office became involved.
"If I was one of the drivers, I'd be very worried about the ATO coming and knocking on my door," said Cousins, who manages Lowndes' teammate Jamie Whincup.
Whincup was listed at $700,000 and Cousins said that figure was probably closer to the mark than any of the other drivers mentioned - but still high.
"The figures have definitely been inflated somewhat and there has definitely been an element of surprise amongst the drivers. I'd like to know what criteria was used," Cousins said.
Lowndes' manager David Segal said the salary was "commercially confidential" and neither he nor the three-time Bathurst champion were willing to comment.
James Courtney, listed as the fourth-highest paid driver on $1.65 million, was also reluctant to speak.
"I was surprised. I don't even know how they'd come to those sort of figures," is all he would say.

A number of V8 Supercar drivers are angry over a report suggesting they earn enormous salaries, well in excess of the highest-paid Australian-based footballers in any code.

Ford hero Craig Lowndes was listed as the highest-paid driver with an annual salary of $2.55 million, and popular Kiwi Greg Murphy second-highest at $2.35 million.

Holden man Murphy was particularly upset, describing the report as "bull *** ".

"All I could ever wish for is that I was doing that well and I know in this game I never will be. Ever," he said.

"It's just incredible. None of the numbers are even close."

It is understood the figures, which appeared in the Sunday Telegraph, took in any income the drivers gained from business ventures outside of V8 Supercars, as well as any perks they received, like phones, clothing or flights.

Taking that into consideration, Murphy still said the figures were grossly inflated.

"Even with everything I do outside of the sport, it's so far, far, far from the truth. It's completely and utterly made up," he said.

Former series champion Rick Kelly agreed, saying he could only dream of making the suggested $1.3 million salary listed in the article.

"If I was really making that much I'd be spending the next week searching for it because it's not where it should be - in my bank account," he said.

Wallabies star Matt Giteau is believed to be the highest-paid player in any football code in Australia, earning $1.5 million a year.

Sydney FC striker John Aloisi is on a reported $1.3 million a season in the A-League, while AFL superstars Jonathan Brown and Chris Judd are both believed to earn more than $1 million.

In the NRL, Kangaroos captain Darren Lockyer is paid an estimated $600,000 by the Brisbane Broncos.

"The football players have got nothing to worry about," added Murphy.

"As long as I'm in V8 Supercars there ain't no chance in hell that I'll ever be anywhere near it."

The 35-year-old was also concerned the report
