Second place too close to call
Update: October 13, 2008, 12.00 PM ET Comment Email Print

With Troy Bayliss having tied up the championship at Magny-Cours the new circuit of Portimao will form the backdrop for what is set to be a close and competitive fight for second place in the championship rankings.

Arithmetically, there are still four riders in with a chance of taking the runner-up spot but it would be a remarkable feat if Carlos Checa (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) could make up his current 41-point disadvantage after Magny-Cours.

Even Max Neukirchner (Alstare Suzuki) may find the 27 points he sits behind second place man Noriyuki Haga (Yamaha Motor Italia) too much to reverse over two races, which indicates that the most likely fight will be an inter-team rivalry between Haga and Troy Corser (Yamaha Motor Italia).

Haga is only nine points ahead of Corser, with 50 up for grabs for any rider who can win both Portimao races.

Right now, Haga has seven wins contributing to his points total of 325, while Corser is still looking for his first win, but has been a more consistent points finisher, securing 12 podiums so far and having only three no scores. Haga has 11 podiums so far but a whopping six no scores.

On recent form?

Haga is almost perfect, having won three of the last four races, and been second in the other.

Race 2

Bayliss and Haga thrashed out a duel for the entire second race, but two laps before the end the newly-crowned champion made his attack and went on to conclude a triumphant day with the win. Third place on the podium went to Corser, who also rode an attacking race, with Checa finishing fourth. There was a terrific s *** for fifth between Sterilgarda team-mates Ruben Xaus and Max Biaggi, with the Spaniard getting the edge in a sprint finish with the Italian. The second race was not so good for the Suzuki riders, with Yukio Kagayama, Nieto and Max Neukirchner finishing in that order behind Biaggi. Roberto Rolfo (Honda Althea) and Lorenzo Lanzi (Ducati RG) both finished in the points, but it was a race 2 to forget for Fabrizio, who only finished 14th.

Bayliss SBK World Champion for the third time!
Update: October 05, 2008, 19.00 PM ET Comment Email Print

Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) clinched the FIM Superbike World Championship for the third time today after finishing third in race 1 at Magny-Cours in front of 78,000 spectators. The Australian rider then celebrated his title in the best possible way by winning race 2. Victory in race 1 and second place in race 2 went to Noriyuki Haga (Yamaha Motor Italia WSB), who moves into second place in the table, with just the final round at Portimao (Portugal) remaining on November 2. With today's results, Ducati also celebrates its fifteenth Manufacturers' title.

Race 1

The race was dominated by Haga, with his third win in a row, the Japanese rider finishing 6" ahead of Fonsi Nieto (Suzuki Alstare), who had a good race to finish runner-up, and Bayliss, who stayed out of trouble to take the title. Fourth went to Max Biaggi (Sterilgarda Go Eleven Ducati), who came on strong towards the end. Max Neukirchner (Alstare Suzuki) was sixth, followed by Troy Corser (Yamaha Motor Italia) and Carlos Checa (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda), who faded with tyre problems after a good early part. Three laps from the end Michel Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox) crashed out while fighting for a podium place with Nieto and Bayliss, while Frenchman Régis Laconi took his PSG-1 Corse Kawasaki to a respectable eleventh place.

Superpole win at Vallelunga goes to Bayliss (Ducati Xerox)
Update: September 20, 2008, 19.45 PM ET Comment Email Print

WSBK championship leader Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) took his seventh Superpole pole position of the season in dry and sunny conditions at the Vallelunga track on the outskirts of Rome. Troy's 25th career Superpole, which he claimed with a time of 1 minute 36.606 seconds, makes him the firm favourite for the win in tomorrow's two races, results that would earn him his third World Superbike title. The 39 year-old Australian will however have his work cut out trying to hold off his front row rivals, starting with the Yamaha Motor Italia WSB duo of Troy Corser and Noriyuki Haga in second and third slots. The top 3 were the only riders to lap Superpole under the 1'37" mark. Fourth place went to hometown hero Max Biaggi (Sterilgarda Go Eleven Ducati), who will be aiming for his first win of the season at his home track.

The second row also has a competitive look about it, with fifth place going to Donington and Brands winner, Ryuichi Kiyonari (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda), just a fraction ahead of Max Neukirchner (Alstare), the first Suzuki rider in the timesheets. Michel Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox Team) also put in a good performance to finish seventh, but was disappointed not to be on the front row at his home track. Two riders ruined their Superpole lap with crashes, Ruben Xaus (Sterilgarda Go Eleven Ducati) and Carlos Checa (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda), who were up at the front in qualifying but who will now have to start from row 3.

Biaggi to return to Aprilia for Superbike World Championship
Update: September 19, 2008, 18.20 PM ET Comment Email Print

Max Biaggi, who won three of his four world 250 GP titles with Aprilia, is set to return to the Noale-based company to ride the Aprilia RSV4 in the Superbike World Championship in 2009 and 2010.

Rome-born Biaggi had a successful period with Aprilia between 1991 and 1996, winning three world titles in the 250 GP class, which included 23 GP wins and 37 podiums.

"Biaggi was our number one choice, I'm delighted to have him back with us" declared Leo Francesco Mercanti, Director of Product Development and Sporting Activities of the Piaggio Group. "Max is a rider who has written a number of important chapters in Aprilia's racing history: he was involved in the company's first major triumphs, and the seasons of Aprilia domination, all of which enabled this young company to join the ‘greats' of motorcycle racing. Today, with Biaggi and the Aprilia RSV4 we begin a new challenge. We are convinced that with him, we will be able to put to the best possible use all of our passion, our expertise and desire to win".

Aprilia is the most successful Italian manufacturer amongst all those taking part in motorcycle racing: since 1992 it has won 31 world titles in GP racing, as well as 4 titles in Supermoto, 2 in Trial and 8 race wins in the Superbike World Championship.

Race 2

Kiyonari was back at the front in the second race after his crash in race 1. The Honda rider took his third win of the season, holding off a late surge from Cal Crutchlow (HM Plant Honda). The final podium slot went to a battered and bruised Corser, who finished his difficult weekend with a gutsy third place. James Ellison (Hydrex Bike Animal Honda) was fourth, ahead of Italians Michel Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox) and Biaggi. The race was held in the pouring rain, and the tricky conditions caught out Bayliss (Ducati), who crashed while in second place. Race 2 was again disappointing for Neukirchner and Checa, while Haga was black-flagged for not coming in for a ride-through penalty.
