Lorenzo diagnosed with further ankle fracture
Monday, 05 May 2008

Jorge Lorenzo examined in Barcelona; right ankle, originally thought to be the least damaged, more seriously injured than in original diagnosis.

Directly upon his return from Shanghai to Barcelona, Jorge Lorenzo was taken to the Sp *** h city´s Institut Universitari Dexeus by ambulance for further inspection of the injuries suffered last Friday in a huge highside crash.

The man in charge of the Fiat Yamaha rider´s medical issues, Dr. Xavier Mir, submitted Lorenzo to an examination of both his left and right ankles, and found a further fracture of the right astragalus (the bone that articulates with the tibia, fibula, calcaneus, and navicular) and a broken ligament in the left ankle.

Lorenzo –who was last operated on by Dr. Mir for a compartmental syndrome in his arm after victory in Portugal- will not be required to go under the knife for his latest injury. However, he will be confined to a wheelchair in order to immobilise both ankles, with particular attention needed for the right hand side.

After confirming that Lorenzo's right ankle injury was more serious than previously though, Dr. Mir explained the next step in supervising the recovery process.

`Next Monday we will carry out more tests, and make a more detailed evaluation of the injuries suffered on both sides,´ said Mir in a statement.

Whilst the MotoGP rookie was able to ride to fourth position in Sunday´s race, the nature of his injuries mean that participation in Le Mans could be in doubt.

Re:08 MOTO GP THREAD Reply to this message
In a result as miraculous as it was mercurial, Jorge Lorenzo took fourth place with a late surge back up the field, playing through the pain of a fractured ankle and other assorted injuries on the occasion of his 21st birthday. Off the podium for the first time this season, the Spaniard nonetheless received a hero´s welcome on his return to the Fiat Yamaha garage. He is now second in the overall standings, seven points behind arch rival Pedrosa.

Marco Melandri had his best result since joining Ducati, in fifth place ahead of 2006 World Champion Nicky Hayden. A tightly bunched group of Tech 3 Yamaha poleman Colin Edwards, Alice Team´s Toni Elias, Suzuki veteran Loris Capirossi and San Carlo Gresini Honda rider Shinya Nakano could have seen any number of combinations to complete the top ten, whilst the only retiree from the race was Chris Vermeulen on the second Rizla Suzuki GSV-R.

Rossi announces return to winning ways with China triumph
Sunday, 04 May 2008

Italian imposes pace to beat Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner to MotoGP victory.

Valentino Rossi ended his seven-race winless streak with a vintage display in the Pramac Grand Prix of China, repeating his 2005 triumph at the Shanghai International Circuit to take his first victory since the 2007 Portuguese Grand Prix last September. He battled with new MotoGP World Championship leader Dani Pedrosa for the majority of the race.

Starting from second on the grid, Rossi was involved in an inseparable front group for the opening laps. Eager to avoid a breakaway from Repsol Honda rider Pedrosa, the five-time MotoGP World Champion matched his Sp *** h rival lap-for-lap before finally sticking a move on him the ninth time around the track. After assuming control, he upped the pace to take his first victory with Bridgestone tyres, setting a new circuit record of 1´59.273 on his 18th lap.

Rossi lies just nine points behind Pedrosa in the standings after becoming the fourth winner in as many races in 2008. Pedrosa tried hard to assume the early advantage, but eventually finished second to continue as the only rider to have placed on the podium at every race so far.

Returning to the rostrum after two races away, 2007 World Champion Casey Stoner completed the top three comprised of each of the previous Shanghai winners. Last year´s victor was unable to play a part in the battle for the win, but now finds himself in a much healthier position in the championship despite not being completely satisfied with the final outcome.

In a result as miraculous as it was mercurial, Jorge Lorenzo took fourth place with a late surge back up the field, playing through the pain of a fractured ankle and other assorted injuries on the occasion of his 21st birthday. Off the podium for the first time this season, the Spaniard nonetheless received a hero´s welcome on his return to the Fiat Yamaha garage ...

Rules apparently state "riders" have to be used...Biaggi is rumoured to be going to one of the satellite teams....Bayliss is also rumoured to be looking at a v8 supercar drive? Prob. media rubbish!
I think Rossi has his glory days well behind him....makes Mick Doohan look way better I think...no one could catch him on the fearsome 500cc 2 stroke...legend!
The young guns are faster and hungrier....Lorenzo has taken to the 800 like he's been riding one for a few seasons...good on him!

Rossi had the same tyres as pedrosa last year.. Stoner had cr@p qualifying tyres last year, but still was the quickest when you add up all qualifying times. I really cant see rossi winning much more this year mate, lorenzo was riding with one foot, and stoner and melandri are slowly getting up there.

Haven't had much to cheer about for a while hey..
I was pleased to see melandri finally have a half decent race. Stoner had soft compound on the rear, was a mistake, but i dont think it would of been worth 15 seconds. Top ride by lorenzo.

Congrats goes to rossi....lets see if he can keep it up.

Re:08 MOTO GP THREAD Reply to this message
full wets, soaking wet in china.

west is in for a good race in the wet as with rossi and vermulin is also good in the wet,

pedrosa does not ride well i the wet and i would be surprised if lorenzo risks his ankles in the wet,,,,

but lets not forget melandri ride at the island in the wet,,,oh gonna be great racing

Love the wet it really is a riders race and seperates the riders from the machines.

stoner will try hard but his bike will strugle in the wet as there is such an explosive power delivery in his bike which will make it harder to ride.

my tips amened due to wet conditions are

1/ rossi
2/ vermulin
3/ west

Re:08 MOTO GP THREAD Reply to this message
Lorenzo examined for ankle fracture after Shanghai high side
Friday, 02 May 2008

Fiat Yamaha rider taken to local hospital for x-ray.

He starred in Qatar, reigned in Spain and thrilled in Estoril, but Jorge Lorenzo´s visit to China has got off to an inauspicious start. The current MotoGP World Championship leader suffered a huge highside in the second half of the opening practice session, and is currently being examined at the city´s Huashan hospital.

The exact extent of his injuries will not be known until after an x-ray is undertaken, but the Clinica Mobile believe that the Spaniard has fractured his right ankle, cut the heel of the same foot and has possible damage to the left ankle. The Spaniard also appears to have suffered an abrasion to his left knee.

`I don't think Jorge will be able to ride this afternoon because he has pain in both ankles and needs a further x-ray at the hospital, so it will take time to get there and back and to do the tests,´ said Daniele Romagnoli, Lorenzo´s Team Manager, after talking with the Clinica Mobile.

`Dr Costa wants to be absolutely sure about the injuries as it looks like there could be possible small fractures in both ankles. The knee injury is not too serious, just a bit of a cut.'

The practice session was Lorenzo´s first since undergoing surgery on his right arm to treat a compartmental syndrome problem.

Re:08 MOTO GP THREAD Reply to this message
MotoGP World Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo did not come out for the afternoon session, having been taken to hospital for examination. The Spaniard suffered a highside in his first premier class Shanghai session, picking up a chipped bone in his left ankle and some damage to that of his right hand side. It is not yet known if the Fiat Yamaha rider will return to action on Saturday as he looks to maintain his 100% pole position record.
