another fact to consider is due they go on to stud, naturally a gelding has alot better chance of becoming a so called champion, lohnro is starting to look like he will become a super sire, than look at his racing career, hard to fault

Only ever seen two champion thoroughbreds in Australia - Kingston Town and Manikato. Yet to see anything as near as good and I doubt that I ever will.

Having a look at the greats of Australian turf and you'll see that most of them have plenty in common. As for the checklist you can see for yourself.

CARBINE: Every question would be answered YES. Winning strike rate was 77% while it placed at 98%. Of course he still holds the weight carrying record for a Melbourne Cup winner.

Same goes for TULLOCH with a winning strike rate of 68% and placing at 98%. Tulloch was our greatest 3yr old with 14 devestating victories in the AJC, VRC, QLD Derbies, Caulfield and Rosehill Guineas and the Caulfield Cup. He won the majority of them by more than five lengths.

WAKEFUL was undoubtably the best mare ever to race in Australian winning G1 events from 1200m to 4800m. Unlike Carbine and Tulloch you can't answer YES to every question in the checklist as her winning strike rate just falls short of the mark at 57% although her place percentage is fine at 93%.

Regardless what era you look at there are common traits that seperate the champions from the rest. Problem is that emotions can cloud our judgement and distort objectivity.

So what makes a champion racehorse? Simply use this checklist to work it out. If the answer is no more than yes then I'd suggest that the horse is restricted in it's ability.

1. Was it a multiple G1 winner at WFA ?
2. Did it win at G1 level more than it lost ?
3. Was it's overall winning strike rate better than 60% ?
4. Was it's overall place strike rate better than 80% ?
5. Did the horse beat other multiple G1 winners on a consistant basis at stakes level ?
6. Did the horse win G1's races in more than one state ?
7. Was the horse consistantly dominant in it's stakes wins ? Did it often crush top class opposition ?
8. Did the horse ever have a winning streak of more than four at stakes level on more than one occasion ?
9. Could it carry big weights in handicap events and still win ?
10. Was the horse able to win on the big occasions ?

Other points to consider should the horse in question receive more than four "NO's" are;

1. exceptional achievements (eg: 3 Melbourne Cups, Triple Crown's or dual Cox Plates etc.) or against the odds big race victories (eg: Lonhro's Australian Cup).

2. Blistering acceleration or the ability to sustain a long, fast run.

3. G1 wins at varying distances

4. G1 wins at different age groups.
