My sincerest wishes to Gold Edition and all involved in her wonderful career. Better to retire her now than the lameness leading to a tragedy.

No doubt we will see some of her offspring in the years to come, perhaps one will be as great as her. I'm sure her breeding mate will be carefully chosen.

We have lots of great memories and her success is up there with the best of them all.

Congratulations Gold Edition!

Curtain down on Gold Edition's career

Australian racing's iron mare Gold Edition has tried her heart out on the track for the last time.

Toowoomba trainer Ron Maund and owner Kevin O'Brien immediately announced the four-year-old's retirement when she pulled up lame after her gallant fourth to Apache Cat in today's Group One Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington.

"It's been a great ride. There probably won't be another Gold Edition, but I can look forward to her foals now," Maund said.

Jockey Stathi Katsidis told Maund and O'Brien the grey mare didn't feel right in her action today and stewards later reported she had pulled up lame in the near foreleg.

"I could see by her action she wasn't relishing the high speed she goes," Maund said.

"We don't need to risk her. She's simply been wonderful."

Gold Edition, by Lion Hunter from the Success Express mare Glimmers, bows out of racing as a dual Group One winner who raced 37 times for 17 wins and 13 placings and prizemoney of $3,182,195.

Thanks Gold Edition, good luck and hopefully many a future champions.
