I agree,I think breeding has a lot to do with the problem too, race the guts out of them as 2 year olds, wack em off to stud after their 3yr old season.
I dont know whats changed in racing these days,The great T.J Smith was known for his bone and muscle approach to training, which no doubt Gai uses too,But I dont recall T.J getting lots of 2 yr old break downs, maybe breeding has caused weaknesses in horses that wernt apparent in years gone by. |

The pressure that is placed on 2 year olds today is the real cause of the problem. Owners and trainers are out to make lots of money, and they all want a quick payback period.
Think about it. The bones of 2 year olds are still not yet mature and fully fused. They have to go through the enormous stresses and strains when being prepared for several races as a 2 year old. No wonder very few of the 'stars' come back as successfull 3 year olds. Just look at all the 2 year old stars from the David Hayes stable over the last two years. What have they done since?
The time has come for the authorities to place restrictions on 2 year old racing in Australia. The Golden Slipper prize money is ridiculous. It's like putting up a prize for the winner of a tiny-tots race at primary school! |
