| I rode big philou a few times when I was an apprentice, best i could do was a second at moonee valley and unsuccessfully protested against winner. I believe i was the last jockey to ride him |

| Octagonal is probably the most overrated 4yo in Australian racing history - defeated Gold City ( a 7yo handicapping mare to win the Australian Cup by a short half head), Arkady ( a handicapping 4yo to win the Tancred by a short half head), defeated nothing to win the Doomben Cup and when he met the only weight for age horse of that season (Intergaze) he was wallpoed in the Queen Elizabeth. |

| so you are Charles Gawith's grandson.Light Fingers did not carry the record winning weight for a 4yo - she carried a record winning weight for a four year old mare and that has since been bettered by Lets Elope ( also trained by the genius Cummings) - Big Philou would probably have won the cup although many still doubt the valididty of his Caulfield Cup win which was on protest from Nausori who was first past the post.He was a grand horse - but to declare that he would have won the Cup is to detract from Rain Lover who was a proven two miler (Big Philou was not)and to read to much into a two horse Queen Elizabaeth is not fair either given that Rain Lover made the pace and was a sitting shot for the other horse. |

| Light Fingers was not Big Philou's relation in any way. She was by Le Filou from Cuddlesome - he was by Le Filou from Pink Lady who was out of Cuddlesome by Contact - the cross was similar but they were 3/4 relatives. |

| All great horses guys , I am a bit older (53) remember a horse called Gala Red in the 70s. It was a distance bloke , 2000mt plus and used to get out to leads of up to 30 lenghts. Won quite a few , but most by a nose or head. Was a grand old nag and I won a bit on it , but the heart would race when it was 10 lenghts in front at the 400 at always stopped . |

Speaking of The Oaks - Light Fingers (Big Philou's half-sister) won that race as a 3yo in 1964.
She took out the M.Cup the following year. |

My favorite horse/s which I've followed time and time again -
I backed Shaftesbury Avenue at his first start as a 2yo in a mid-week race where he won for me at double figure odds and I somehow knew he was something special at that time. I backed him in every race after that....damn he won me some money.
I also had a soft spot for the mare Inaflury - she won 4 or 5 races on end for me as a 3yo and would have won the oaks of her year but for a paddock accident. She was a superior 3yo of her year and had it all over Grand Archway.
There's been a few others...Rising Fear, Mum's Pride, Noircir, Oregan Seal but there doesn't seem to be any racing at the moment which I've clung to. |

Fav thoroughbreds for me personally would of course have to be Le Filou, Light Fingers, Red Handed and Big Philou. Le Filou was the famous french export which arrived in New Zealand not long after W.W.2 in 1945.
Le Filou's most successful matings produced 8 two mile Cup winners, 4 of which raced straight into Australian racing history. They include 2 M.Cup winners: Light Fingers, Red Handed, 1 Caulfield Cup winner: Big Philou and Brisbane Cup winner: Fulmen.
Light Fingers holds the weight-carrying winning record for a four-year-old. She carried a touch over 52.5kg, in her 1965 Melbourne Cup win. Ridden by Roy Higgins and trained by Bart Cummings.
Red Handed won the M. Cup in 1967. Ridden by Roy Higgins and trained by Bart Cummings.
Big Philou won the Caulfield Cup in 1969 (ridden by Roy Higgins and trained by Bart Cummings) he could have, should have and would have won the M. Cup in 1969 taking out the cups double. Even though he missed out on the M. Cup (which had Rain Lover winning it instead and creating back to back history) he got his redemption in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes march 14 1970 in the classic weight-for-age run at Flemington over 1.5 miles. The Big Philou V's Rain Lover slugfest in which a still not a 100% Big Philou squared off in a two-horse match race against Rain Lover the reighning M. Cup winner.........Big Philou did go on to win by a short half head. It was no M.Cup but it did after all prove a point. Poetic Justice Indeed.
Big Philou retired in country Victoria. He died in 1983 at the young age of 18.
Which horse will always be my absolute favourite? Simple. Big Philou of course! Why? My grandfather owned him.
Thank-you Roy Higgins and Thank-you Bart Cummings for having my family be part of racing history, something which I feel is an absolute honour and a privilege, aswell as, been able to share along side the very best of the best - Horses, Jockey's and of course Trainers so once again, a huge Thankyou. |

I've witnessed the might Kingston Town, I've watched many of the greats, Manikato, Sir Dapper, Better Loosen Up etc etc ... my favorite horse ???
Sovereign Ghost ... Beau Sovereign/ Holborn Court.
Old Bill raced for us back in the 80's an accrued 28 wins in his career and $160,630 in stakes. His biggest race win was the WATC Belmont Newmarket and he went WA TAB horse of the year as a ten year old. A truely remarkable horse.
Thanks for the memories Bill . . . all those hard miles up to Kal in the 9 horse and a stop at Southern Cross for you to have a pick were indeed worth it.
3/1 ... 6/1, 7/1. Tx for the money. |
