Hold your horses, Perc Galea. Noone wants to hear your big-noting claptrap. The thread is about the best horse you saw, which is what it should be about.

How come every thread is just an excuse for you to skite about some win, either imaginary or othewise?

You're not impressing anyone. Stick to the topic and stop playing the good sort by living in the past.

Well, I had $2000 on a horse called Gelsemino (rider... Wayne Harris) at 16/1 back in '79. . . . It won the race at Royal Randwick by 3 lengths after straightening up by 5.

A truely remarkable day and win .... i'd have to rate Gelsemino right up there, even though he only ever won a few. rofl

$34,000 ....... tx Gelsemino.

MIGHT AND POWER - By Far.

I saw him live win the QE stakes on Emrites Stakes Day in 1998. Amazing.

His wins in the Caulfield Cup, Melbourne Cup and Cox Plate were also awesome.

By far the best ive seen.

Doubt anyone here saw PHAR LAP. If you did, I'm in awe...but I doubt it.

RISING FAST, BALMERINO, VAIN, BERNBOROUGH et al were greats...champions. I just wish I could of seen them. I'm jealous.

I was always a fan of Balmerino, at the peak of his career
He dealt to the best in Southern Hemispere, To show it was no fluke he did the same to the Northern Hemispere Horses
Not too many of modern time horses could match that type travelling And then turn out champion after champion at stud as well I think

Balmerino
Sunline ( Not every horse go's out and earns $13 Million dollars +
Pha lap ( Has to get a mention )
The Diva ( her deeds is amazing to say the least )

*Note* Not in that order I might mention

Because I'm so darn old, I've been lucky enough to see extraordinary gallopers such as Rising Fast, an iron champion if ever there was one. Just check his 1954 Melbourne Cup week record. But the best horse I saw in action was Tulloch, by a mile.

Couldn't agree more, Rob, but as VAIN was racing before I was born I couldn't put him in. I've just included horses I've been able to watch "live" and up close. Hence, i've had to exclude a lot of the champions from overseas, who I've only been able to watch on the box.

Re:Best thoroughbred you've ever seen ra ... Reply to this message
VAIN would have to crack a mention
For instance Lonhro posted his 9th group 1 as a rising 6yo .Vain had
amassed an amazing 7 group 1 events as only a 3yo! Had the Blue Diamond
Stakes been in existence at that time it would have been 8. Vain had 14
career starts for 12 wins and 2 seconds. He smashed Sydney sensation
Special Girl to win the Golden Slipper, and after tasting his first
defeat in the AJC Sires bounced back to win the Champagne by an
astounding 10 lengths. He toyed with older rivals to win the WFA
Freeway at the Valley as a 3yo, then went on to annex the Caulfield
Guineas.
His most amazing feat was over the spring carnival at Flemington in late
69. He won the group 1 Craven A Stks ( Now the Salinger) 1200m by an
astonishing 12 lengths on Derby Day. He then won the group 2 Linlithgow
(Now the Emirates ?) On Oaks day 1400m and then on the final day won
the group 1 Adams mile ( Now the Emirates mile) 1600m, all 3 races
against open age. After winning the Adams mile Bart Cummings remarked '
I doubt if I have ever seen a horse that could make top class, more
mature horses look as mediocre as Vain does'. It would be interesting to hear
how Bart would rate Vain against the recent so called champion sprinters.

Unfortunately the Adams mile was Vains last career start due to a serious leg
Injury, a major disappointment in racing history.
What this horse could have done if not tragically struck down
before even reaching his racing prime is mind boggling. Although many
other horses of around his era have had their virtues extolled,
paradoxically little is mentioned on the astonishing feats of this
marvellous animal.
