regarding the Hawks game plan, didn't Clarko have them playing more 1 on 1 accountable defense in the game against the Dockers? It was a game the Hawks weren't meant to win, but I remember watching it and the commentators talking about the Hawks changing from their rolling zone that night. Why change back?
Especially with the Hawks playing with a few more young kids then they would have wanted to I thought that a more accountable style of footy would have been a better option for them, rather then the zone which seems to work best when you are playing with a steady line up that understands the way each other plays. |

I hope you are right Scarpi.
What are you doing saying nice things about Hawthorn though? You have butted heads enough times with Hawks fans that I thought you'd be preying for us to not win another game! :) |

I agree, to a point. I do think we have changed the plan, but some of the 'in one week, out the next' players are in no-man's land at times.
Last week we had 2 big, tall forwards up against some smaller, inexperienced backmen. Long kicks into the forward 50, when we had the wind, would've advantaged Franklin and Roughead for sure. And Ozzie would've crumbed any spills well.
Into the wind, I still think kicking long was the right move - it won't fly 50, but it will at least move it up the ground. The handpass at all costs tactic was never going to work in the wet - one mistake and the ball is inside 50 for the Eagles!
Oh well, hopefully we spring an upset under the roof - perfect conditions to try to improve our woeful ball skills.
All I need is a glimmer, a spark of hope - anything that makes me think that this year is just an aberration, not a sign of the future. |

what I want to know is when is Clarko going to get game Plan b or c into action.
Yes our zone worked last year and won us a gf,
However its not working this year, regardless if we have our whole team in EVERY team in the comp knows our game plan it is as easy as ABC to work out,
and when our zone is smashed we are fecked because we DONT have game plan B or C....
Drills are all good and well every side needs them BUT my concern is that the boys have been "drilled" so much they have lost the ability to think the "football Smarts" and the basics of the game...
perfect example was against west coast when we persisted with the backwards, sideways, switching,,,crud....
It was wet and windy...where have the "football Smarts" gone...kick it LOOOONNNGGGGGGG..
frustrating...:-S
thoughts???? |

| I don't care what game plan they use - I just want to see them play 4 quarters of football! Why, all of a sudden, are we slumping in the second half again? Surely the players are not that unfit! Used to be a couple of years ago that our second half was rotten, then last year it was fantastic, and now we're back to even worse than we were. I love our guys and will defend them to the death, but they are making it hard. Oh, and can we lose some of the handball? It's NOT WORKING! |

We played man on man against Freo from memory - that went well!
The 'cluster' zone relies on every player being fit, every player knowing his role backwards and everyone playing from the same song sheet - clearly not possible when you are losing players all the time and nobody is really at full fitness. It is too easy to break down and any sides with a bit of pace or decent foot skills will kill us if we are not spot on in all areas.
I think man on man from here is the way to go - unless Clarko has another master tactic on the horizon?! |

I HATE the zone and wish clarko would give it the flick and play man on man football, at least untill the side is back to full strenght or near enough.
I noticed in the game against port that they really had our measure on the "zone" and i am sure it helped that they had one of the ex hawks who along with clarko perfected it,
however with our injuries and problems its not working...and port laid down the blueprint for all the other teams to dissolve the zone.
what are the thoughts of other hawkas on the "zone" or other game plans. |
