Premiership players Cyril Rioli and Xavier Ellis have committed to the Hawthorn Football Club, re-signing to the Club for a further three years and two years respectively.
Rioli, who made a successful return from injury in the Hawksâ nine-point win over North Melbourne at *** Stadium on Sunday, has been in stellar form this season. Since joining the Club as a first round selection in the 2007 National Draft (No.12 overall); Rioli played 36 consecutive games before missing a month through injury.
In his 44 games Ellis has continued to display the kind of drive and play-making ability which saw the Club take the talented and versatile midfielder with its first selection (No.3 overall) in the 2005 National Draft. Ellis was one of a number of Hawks who made an impact in the 2008 grand final and has also made a contribution this season despite an injury interrupted pre-season.
Hawthorn General Manager Football Operations, Mark Evans, was delighted in confirming the news to hawthornfc.com.au, with the signings reflecting a further commitment by the playing group to the long-term success of the Club.
âItâs sometimes hard to believe that these young men are still only in their second (Rioli) and fourth (Ellis) year of football,â said Evans.
âRioli is an exciting player to watch and his work ethic is outstanding. His tackling has become a real feature of his game and he has continued his impressive form in his second season.
Xavier has shown great application and versatility in his football this season playing defensive, through the midfield and forward at times.â |

Old news browny. A couple of weeks ago the Hawks were saying they had to work out how much to pay Rioli.
All three (Hodge, Franklin and Rioli) have all said they WILL re-sign with the Hawks, so the club needs to make sure they don't screw them over by under paying them.
Rioli was the tough one to decide on, as he is currently a second year player - so he hasn't EARNED a big salary yet. However the open market suggests he should be paid top dollar, he is good enough to command it. So the Hawks will have to pay above the usual for a player with just 40 games under his belt, it is only fair trade for his loyalty.
Clarko also said they were prepared to let some talented players go if they needed to free up the money to pay the 'essential' players enough. It will be interesting to see how it all goes. |

CYRIL Rioli has reassured Hawks fans that he won't leave the club for a big pay day elsewhere. Rioli is out of contract at the end of the season, meaning the Hawks could face a salary cap squeeze with Luke Hodge also uncontracted for next year and Lance Franklin whose deal finishes at the end of next year.
That leaves the door open for another club to offer a big-money deal to the exciting teenager, but Rioli told the Hawks website money was not a major factor for him.
âNot really. The way the club is going now, Iâm pretty much settled here now. Iâm here to stay and I donât want to be going anywhere," Rioli said.
"With the new contract, Iâm just going to let it come. Iâm not too fussed about that. Iâm just happy to be playing footy,â he said.
âGetting extra money doesnât really matter that much to me. Iâm pretty happy here and I wouldnât go anywhere.â |
