As we prepare for Indigenous Round this weekend, Hawthorn Football Club continues to support The Rioli Fund for Aboriginal Health as they strive to raise funds which help Indigenous children become the healthy adults. All money raised by the Rioli Fund goes towards Indigenous health research at the Menzies School of Health Research.

Menzies are Australia’s leaders in indigenous health research and their researchers are discovering ways to ‘close the gap’ in indigenous life expectancy and ensure that the Indigenous kids of today become the healthy adults of tomorrow.

It’s a sad fact that young Indigenous people are more likely to suffer from diseases such as pneumonia and that only one in five children in remote Indigenous communities has normal hearing because of severe ear infections.

Young Indigenous children are more likely to be hospitalised than non-indigenous kids, and seven out of every 10 Indigenous children can expect to have scabies and skin sores in the first year of their life.

Poor health and poor education are strongly linked. A child suffering from poor nutrition or multiple ear infections will have poor concentration and learning ability which can seriously affect the way they live their lives into the future.

You can really make a difference by donating to the Rioli Fund, as every cent of the Rioli Fund’s proceeds go directly to Menzies School of Health Research for research into child health and mental health.

Visit the Rioli Fund website and click on the 'donate now' button on the homepage or give your spare change this Sunday to our tin rattlers outside the ground before the game.

It has added another string to his bow and I’ve spoken a bit in this column about our young guys getting their chances this year. They are getting a number of games under their belt which bodes well for their experience.

This week we’ve got the Demons and they are playing some really good football and it will be a significant challenge for us.

They have taken it right up to some really good teams this season. They have been working the ball out of their back half really well. They have a lot of run and a lot of young guys keen to win. We have to make sure we are on our mettle.

This week is also special for the fact it is AFL Indigenous Round. At Hawthorn we have an exciting group of indigenous players and I know this week means a lot to them.

I spoke before about Changa’s work ethic, but we’ve also got some fine young men at our club such as Cyril Rioli, Mark Williams, Lance Franklin, Cameron Stokes and Carl Peterson who are all so proud that the indigenous contribution to the game is officially recognised each year

Sat, May 16, 09IT IS a different feeling when you win interstate.

Don’t get me wrong, winning anywhere is a fantastic feeling but when you travel together to the other side of the country as we did last week, there is a real sense that you are on a mission together and the satisfaction you get from completing that mission is one of the real joys of team sport.

That said, our game against Fremantle was a pretty tough encounter. We had to be pretty determined to overcome them and they played good footy and fought hard for the whole night. We had a good 10 minute patch in the second quarter that was probably the difference in the end.

There is no doubt that when you play away at a ground like Subiaco, it is always a hard game to win whether it is Fremantle or West Coast.

One of our more inspirational players last week was Chance Bateman who only played half a game the week before against Essendon but came out as one of our best on ground.

‘Changa’ is a durable guy and he worked his extremely hard for the whole game, especially in the first half when the whips were cracking. He rolled the sleeves up and he and Brad Sewell led the way with their work rate.

Another to impress me was Ben McGlynn. ‘Hoopy’ had the task of running with Paul Hasleby who has been in brilliant form and got the job done.

The leading individual goalkicker against Melbourne is Peter Hudson who booted 16 in Round 5, 1969. Hudson also holds the Round 9 record and has done so for the past 41 years. He booted 10, in a 30 point victory over Fitzroy at Glenferrie, in this round in 1968.

Re:Nye's round 9 dribble - v Demons Reply to this message
Hawthorn was behind in the head-to-head battle with this week’s opponent, Melbourne, from the first game between the two teams in Round 11, 1925, until Round 1 last season when Hawthorn’s massive 104 point win squared the ledger at 74 wins apiece. A follow-up victory in Round 9 last season put Hawthorn in front for the first time – 75 to 74 from 149 games.

Hawthorn lost the first nine meetings between the two clubs and the deficit grew as big as 36 (after a 4 point loss at the MCG in Round 7, 1968) before the Hawks began to reel it in. When the deficit was 36, the two clubs had played 74 games, with the Hawks winning 19 and losing 55. It took exactly the same number of games, and a 55-19 record the other way, for the Hawks to level the tallies at 74-74.

The Hawks did some serious catching up when putting together the club’s greatest ever winning sequence against another club, the run of 22 consecutive victories against Melbourne from Round 13, 1973 to Round 3, 1984.

Re:Nye's round 9 dribble - v Demons Reply to this message
One of the most memorable matches between Hawthorn and Melbourne took place 19 years ago this round - in Round 9, 1990.

With Jason Dunstall and Dermott Brereton taking no further part in the game after quarter time (in the days of only two interchange players), and then Gary Ayres injured in the third term, the Hawks’ chances of beating top team Melbourne seemed remote.

With the Demons leading by two goals in the third quarter, the immobile Ayres was sent to full forward. Ayres out-pointed two defenders to take a pack mark and kicked the goal off a couple of steps. He added another later in the term, while also decisively winning a push and shove with a handful of Melbourne defenders. Sandwiched between Ayres’ two goals, Dean Anderson had burst clear of a pack to score and give Hawthorn the most unlikely of leads.

Melbourne recorded the opening score of the final term – a behind. It was to be their final score of the match. Hawthorn was about to kill them off. Platten twice, Anderson and Ayres all booted inspirational goals as the Hawks recorded one of the clubs most heroic ever wins – 14.8.92 to 7.6.48.

Nye's round 9 dribble - v Demons Reply to this message
This is early, but it will also be quick.

The Demons play a style that involves a lot of running, not too different from Essendon.

Melbourne played well against Geelong (better than the score suggests) and pushed the Doggies all the way last week.

The Hawks are coming off a trip to Perth and will be flat and tired as a result.

Melbourne will throw the kitchen sink at us and I fear it will be just enough to cause a massive boilover.

Robertson will boot 5 and the Hawks will go down by 12 points.
