And how lucky have Tassie fans been in the past 2 years. Last season Hawks played Geelong, Port Adelaide, West Coast and Nth Melbourne down there - so the 5 teams they saw live finished 1,2,3,4,5 on the ladder.
This year they get to see Hawthorn play the Crows, Port, Bulldogs and Brisbane - all sides that are genuine finals prospects. Especially the Crows and Bullies who you can pencil in as finalists now. |

Hawthorn play 4 games a year in Tassie for a couple of reasons -
Firstly they make a motza out of it! Tassie sponsor the club to the tune of 5 million a year I think it is. In return Tasmania gets an estimated 3 million PER GAME in its pocket.
Secondly, they play the ground well and therefore have a GENUINE home ground advantage, something most Vic clubs don't have.
Thirdly it opens the door to many new members, hence the upsurge in numbers. If the AFL won't give Tassie a side of their own, the Hawks are prepared to step in as a 'foster side'. The aim is to get 10,000 members from Tassie (at the moment I think it is a bit over 5,000, add 5 thousand more and you get a total membership of 45,000 - see where this is going?!)
Victorian based members are compensated by having designated away games added to their membership access. This year they can use their membership to get into away games against North, Rich, Coll and Melb. Add to that the Tassie games too and Victorian based members could theoretically have access to 15 games a year on their ticket - all they need to do is take the short trip down to Tassie 4 times a year.
This set up is win/win/win. It benefits the club, benefits the fans and benefits the state of Tassie. |

| Why do the Hawks have to play several home games in Tasmania each year as they claim to have sold 35,000-40,000 membership tickets in recent years. Is it a money grabber showing total disrepect for their loyal members, are the membership figures rubbery and the Hawks need the cash of course not rbrownoze will tell all and sundry its the family clubs way of promoting football. That's why it is up to their midfield to stop the Hawks from getting any half decent ball into the forward 50. You give a 50/50 contest to the Hawks forwards against this Port defense and Buddy, Roughie and Willo will win 80% of the time - and as a result they will kick a winning score.
Port have an excellent midfield group who can match Hawthorn through the guts. They seem to shut down Mitchell quite often too, and without Hodge in the side Sammy will be target number 1. But Sewell in in great form, as are the likes of Bateman, Crawford and Young.
Port may try to play a negative sort of game, trying to frustrate Hawthorn into mistakes and hitting them on the rebound. But I still think it will be a free-flowing shootout. |

| Port's main problem is defence. Their tall defenders are slow and cumbersome and can't be relied upon to make good decisions. The general defensive action around the ground is also too often lacking. If they're not switched on in that regard and don't play smart (ie. don't play into Hawthorn's hands with the so-called clustering tactics), I can't see them getting close. Unfortunately. |

Yeah, the Hawks website has a weekly 'facts about the round' which says things like what Hawthorn's win/loss ratio is for that round or their record against the side they will be playing. Then they go on with a few stats and points of interest.
If I can find the stats on Lloyd I will let you know. |

Actually, just looked it up. Hudson kicked at least 1 goal in 126 of his 129 matches, including 120 stright games!
Dunstall kicked 72 stright, got injured, kicked 44 straight - so that streak was basically 116 consecutive COMPLETED games. He also kicked a goal in 254 of his 269 games. |

That is SCORING at least 100 points each game.
You're right about the Croad kick, but a couple of seasons at Freo is punishment enough. He's been fantastic for us since he came back from the dark side.
Interesting to see your mob just beat us to 40,000 members. We will certainly reach that mark too as we reached 39,000 last weekend. There is still 5 or 6 weeks left before the cut off so I'd imagine another 900 memberships should'nt be too much of a problem. That would be 3 Vic clubs over that mark - great effort!
Another interesting fact is that Buddy has now kicked at least 1 goal in his last 40 games, leaving him behind only Dunstall and Hudson on the Hawks list of longest goal streaks - mind you Hudson is over 100 and Dunstall's 70 odd was only broken when he suffered a fractured skull in the first quarter of a game against Melbourne. On his return he had a streak of 60 or so.
In those last 40 games Buddy has kicked 139 goals. That is just under 3.5 goals a game, an average he is increasing almost weekly. Even if it stays at that, a 250 game career will net him about 875 goals. A far cry from Dunstall's 1254 in 269 games or Lockett's 1360 in 281, but the way the game is played at the moment it is unrealistic to expect anyone to get near those numbers right now! |

nye is that wins by 100 points or socring over 100 points?
sorry can't be bothered looking up their results :)
Good start to the season anyway :) hopefully you don't do a repeat of 2001 and lose because of that sheep shagging hack's ability at kicking a goal! (if memory serves me right) |

Hawthorn are looking at two potential records this wekeend also. They could equal the clubs best ever start to the season with 8, acheived also in 2001.
Plus, they can extend their club record run of consecutive 100+ points matches to start a season to 8. I also believe if they do this it will be the clubs first ever run of 8 100+ scores in a row at any stage of a season.
Good luck boys. |

Last time these two met at this venue the game was a beauty! Both sides have awesome records at the ground and both are in top form.
This is a game that could go either way. The loss of Hodge and Bateman from the Hawks midfield is a concern. But we have shown all season that we have the depth to cover key losses - we started the year without Hodge, Crawford and Lewis. We've played well without Mitchell, Bateman and Dew as well during the year.
It will be interesting to see how big Stewie goes against his old club, I think he'll be pumped for a big outing - and Port will be pumped to make sure that doesn't happen!
Who will take Buddy? Carlile? Chaplin? Big ask for whoever gets the gig. Then there's the in form Roughie and Williams to contend with too. I just can't see Port having the man-power down back to stop these guys if Hawthorn get any quality ball through the middle of the ground.
Up the other end the Hawks will need to shut down Tredrea, Westhoff, Rodan and Motlop etc. Not an easy task either, even with Victorian reps Croad and Brown and the in form Birchall, Guerra and Gilham.
Traditionally, Tassie games are low scoring - I think you can throw the form guide out the window there! This will be a shootout. If we can break even in the centre and get enough ball to the 'big 3' up front, I think we will kick a winning score.
My Tip: Hawks by 4 goals. |
