What a great win! We saw the good, the bad and the ugly from Buddy saturday night - fortunately the good was very damn good!
After he missed an easy set shot early in the last qtr, I was saying how he couldn't be classed a champion until he can get the 'bread and butter' shots. Just as I finished saying that he pots that ripper from deep in the pocket! The guy can do the extrordinary, yet makes the simple seem hard.
I think any set shot he gets now that is inside 40m, he should play on, attempt to beat the man on the mark, then snap it over his shoulder - he's 200% more likely to goal than by doing it the normal way!
Got the rejuvinated Tiggers this weekend, I hope we can keep the ball rolling - only 3 shy of the club record start to a season, Tiges, Pies, Port and Melb next 4! We're a chance! |

Charman is fit and will definately play.
Croady back is a plus, and for the first time this year we will have the full midfield brigade on the park - Mitchell, Hodge, Lewis, Crawford, Bateman and Sewell.
I can't wait for this game - should be a classic. |

shotgun with 4 bullets .....
use the 4 bullets on Brown and that should slow him down... use the stub of the handle of the gun on bradshaw :P |

Good points made here regarding Brown and Bradshaw. I think the key to the Hawks winning will be the midfield. If we can win the midfield battle it will go a long way towards negating the influence of B&B.
It has been rumoured that Croad may play, however I think this is just a rumour created to throw a spanner in the works of Brisbanes planning. Presuming he doesn't play, I honestly think we will see Robert Campbell get the job on Brown. This would require either rotating Roughie through the ruck with Taylor, or bringing in Reneof. Gilham may be the other option for Brown, be it 1 on 1 or double teaming with Campbell.
As for Bradshaw, the obvious choice would be Campbell Brown, however I think Murphy (who did a very good job on Burton last week) would also do quite well. Gilham IMO would not be a good match here as Bradshaw would have it all over him with pace and agility.
Rest assured, the Brisbane coaching staff at this very point in time are trying to figure out how to stop Buddy, Roughie AND Willo....... |

| You may be right, and that would be great preparation for finals. I do think the Lions are top 8 chances - then again, most teams are (expt Melb, Rich, Carl and Freo I think). |

I think brissie will be alot harder to beat later in the year... and so will carlton. It might prove a harder finish then expected to the year
They will win a bucket load of games this year... top 4 easily... top 2 likely |

Hawthorn's early season success though has been against 4 sides who will not feature too heavily in September you wouldn't think. The opponents have been progressively harder though - Dees, Freo, Kangas and Adel. This time we step up again to play Brissie - then a drop in quality for a clash with the Tigers.
This weekend, then Collingwood in rd 7 and the Bullies in rd 10 (if they are still fit by then!) will be the first major tests of our credentials. I'm not saying we won't lose any of the others - you never know - but these are the games Clarko will have a big fat circle around.
We don't play Geelong until rd 17, Sydney until rd 15 and St Kilda until rd 16. That is a tough 3 weeks there, four when you see we have Collingwood in rd 18. The run home is easier though - Bris (in tas), Rich, WC, Carlton. Still a long way to go before then though! |

hawks should get a rare win at the gabba unless the lions can match them in the first half... it seems the lions are having trouble starting games but are running them out very well.
Please hawks go easy on us... under 10 goals would be nice.
Im on the hawk bandwagon as a 2nd team... because they are the only team that can stop the cats having a crack at the lions 3 peat |

I think it's the one thing that this Hawthorn side is missing, a big backman other than Croad who can match it with the big power forwards like Brown or Bradshaw.
I think the one stand out thing that Hawthorn has is pressure on the ball carrier and inside the forward 50. This is probably going to be won in the midfield, where i think Mitchell, Hodge, Lewis(if he keeps his head on his shoulders), Bateman, Young, Ladson, Guerra could really get on top of the Brisbane midfield, who boast an aswesome lineup, although are looking ever increasingly slower.
Then you throw Sewell into that mix and you have a hungry combination at any stage that wants the football.
I think Brownie could interestingly match up on someone like Bradshaw. He's played tall in the past and won out...
this will be an awesome game. |

Another thing, Mitch Thorp has been touted by Hawks insiders as 'better than Buddy', he just needs to add a little weight (he's taller than Roughie, but 14 kg lighter!). I don't think he's done a real lot in Box Hill's first 3 games, but then again, Box Hill have been belted each week.
But if he comes good and starts living up to his potential, do we stick him in this forward line? The only way I can see him getting a game is by making a REALLY tough call and dropping the reliable and effective Boyle. The risk is that if we don't play him he will change clubs to get a chance at regular senior footy - and if the insiders are correct then it could REALLY come back to bite us!
Maybe he should be a key target of the Gold Coast. |

We've got Buddy and Roughie giving backmen headaches, Brissie have Brown and Bradshaw. The question this week is:
Are our backmen capable of stepping up again and shutting these two down for 4 quarters?
Our boys have been fantastic all season at shutting down the key forwards we've come up against. But, with all due respect to the clubs we've played, none have anywhere near the potency of these two in Brissie.
No Croad to help take care of Brown - a man who loves to kick goals against Hawthorn! So it will come down to Campbell Brown, Gilham, Birchall and Murphy. Maybe Robert Campbell will head down to the backline for a while too - though you'd think against Charman and Luenberger we will need him rucking for as long as possible.
Once again I think it is up to our midfield to make sure the chances given to the two big blokes are minimised. Starve them of possession and make sure any disposals they do get are under pressure.
With a midfield boasting Black, Power, Notting, Adcok, Johnstone, Lappin etc. this is easier said than done.
But, on form, I think our boys can, and will, break their Gabba hoodoo. The Lions defence isn't as good as Adelaide and this should mean our golden trio of Buddy, Roughie and Willo get a bit of freedom to work their magic. Not to underestimate Merrett, Patfull, Corrie etc, but they are certainly not in the same class as Rutten and Bock.
Getting close to even in the ruck and snaring more of the ball in the midfield should be enough. But, as I've said before, I'm going to be at the game and my record watching the Hawks over the past 10 years is about a 15% winning ratio. In the past 5 or 6 years it is a big, fat ZERO! |
