rbrown it can't be that stringent otherwise they would be able to point out the ones that have drug/mental issues etc...... stuff that these people are very good at hiding! (this is no dig at hawks btw)
remember torture is inhumane :P |

| guys we all know the intense interview process for draft hopefuls and i would expect that signing a million dollar 3 year deal might be a little more involved but as ammatt stated its time to move on |

Most ppl that are depressed hide it pretty well. |

| hey scarpi i'm not suggesting Eade knew he was depressed , just that he knew Hay had some serious issues. Eade 's no dill. And rightly came to the conclusion that the bright lights of the Afl & media scrutiny would be to much for Jonny in his current state. Gees the print media and radio commentators slaughtered the poor guy. They were laughing at him. |

I know a lot about the condition, trust me. I was just going on what ammmatt said. He said Hay was displaying some obvious signs that he needed help, Rodney Eade saw that immediately.
But yes, depression is underfunded un misunderstood in society because there really is no way to 'see' it. And there is still a stigma attached to it (especially if you are male) that if you are depressed you must be weak.
This is why I think the AFL, and in particular the Hawthorn and North Melbourne footy clubs, can help - much like what the AFL is doing with Breast Cancer. |

Of course rbrownoz, a physical isn't going to tell you what a man's mental situation is. But from what ammmatt says, they should have seen it after a quick talk to the guy.
Anyway, ammmatt is right, that is in tha past and both clubs should be looking forward to a damn good season. Maybe even another meeting in September? |

| Yes rbrownoz you're right , thanks for the admission of guilt.lol Must be something to do with the national saying sorry day.:P I know Rocket Eade cut short his interview with Hay , apparently it diddn't take Eade long to work out Hay had serious issues. But we've all moved past that , North to their credit have recruited very strongly since then. I hopr Johnny's ok , i really do. It is a very sad situation. |

The hawks apparently decided it was best if he moved on, they did gloat though at how well they did out of the deal. Kennett had a real go at the Roos for how they dealt with Hay's issues. Which i thought was a bit rich.
Thommo has been good for the Roos , i thought he was the wrong age group for us at the time , but as we've improved more than i'd imagined i'm quite looking forward to his return.
Looking forward to the 2 Vic clashes between our clubs.
Oh thats a great idea( beyond blue) you should make some noise , get it happening. Not sure Demetriou would listen though. |

Ammmatt, I was unaware Hay had been diagnosed prior to the trade. Do you know if it was a similar case as with Thompson where he wanted a change of scene?
I'd hate to think the Hawks 'pulled a swifty' on the Roos by hiding his condition - unless Hay wanted it kept secret, in which case it is HE that owes the Roos a whole lot!
Either way, it is a shame these two outstanding players have suffered this way. I'm sure there are many others out there also. Hay at one stage looked set to be one of the games best fullbacks. Thompson is still a class act and will only make the Roos stronger in '08. |

| nye ..... i reckon you're a straight up kinda person , but the Hawks DID know about Hay . But decided that he shouldn't say anything.... Now before you start lol gees after seeing his tv interview , where he stated his the best he'd been for ages. !! Blind bloody freddie should've known all was not right. So it is the Roos fault. |

Hay was traded BEFORE his illness came to light, the Hawks looked at him as lazy and uncommitted. It wasn't until the Roos said to shape up after he kept getting into trouble that he announced his problem.
Thompson ASKED to leave as he felt a change of club would help him. The Hawks were obviously disappointed, but understood and let him go.
I know you're just wanting a bite, and shame on me for doing so, but 5hit happens! |

| Thompson and Hay were sent packing when the family club had no further use for them in their time of need both were loyal servants of the family club but this didnt count when their time was up. |

Given our president is also heavilly involved in the Beyond Blue charity that raises awareness of depression, and the fact that we lost two star players to our club from the disease (Hay and Thompson). Why wouldn't Hawthorn and fellow 1925 VFL inductees Nth Melbourne (the other side both these players have/do play for) ask the AFL for an MCG 'blockbuster' to help this worthwhile charity?
The 'Beyond Blue Cup' to be held on the first Saturday arvo of each year's split round - make sure it is the only game in Victoria that day and spruik the rivalry between the two clubs. It can double as a major awareness campaign for a disease that many Australian's suffer from, but very few understand or accept. |
