The problem is some professionals do and some dont stay on top.
I remember Tony Jacklin who  went back to back in the The British Open 69 Then the Us Open 70.
Then when winning by thirten shots in his defense of the British Open in 1971 , a horrendous storm interupted play he cocnsequently came fifth.
The magic was broken, the following year Trevino chipped in to deny him his title again.
He was never the same, he just faded from sight after that.
Its not easy to continue in the game of Golf especially at the top level.Only a few survive this constant battle and the record books show this.
Campbell will most probably end up on the Euro pga Tour  just like John Daly  and Darren Clarke along with a  host of many others.
He may turn the tide like some have done in the past, but it is all about confidence in the game of Golf.
If you lose confidence you fail, but if he regains it ? .
We may see him return, if he can return to his ealier years As I know how well he played then.
I personally think he will return, I physically watched him blow out in the British Open at St Andrews 1995 after leading in the third round .
Although John Daly won it in a playoff against Constantino Rocco his game was still a class act during the four days.

Hey Ron, does your missus know how to make humble pie?
Better rustle up a batch, because I reckon you'll be scoffing some before the year's out.

AUGUSTA, Georgia - New Zealand's Michael Campbell continued his poor run at the US Masters, shooting a five over par 77 to be near the back of the field after his first round today.

Golf: Augusta owes me - Campbell

New Zealand golfer Michael Campbell believes Augusta National owes him as he seeks to end a seven-year US Masters hoodoo.

Campbell will tee-up in this year's 72nd Masters without out any momentum, having played just nine rounds of golf this year in four events.

Since placing 70th in January's Qatar Masters, the Wellingtonian has missed the cut in the Dubai Desert Classic, withdrew after one round of the Malaysian Open and pulled out on the eve with injury from the New Orleans Classic.

Last week he was cut from the last two days of the Houston Open.

Campbell has missed the halfway cut in each of his seven Masters appearances, leaving him with the worst Augusta record of anyone in the field this week.

Only Australia's *** Lonard, who has missed the cut in all his four starts and Japan's Toru Taniguchi, who missed the cut in 2002 and 2003, come close to Campbell.

"I've come to Augusta having gone through a really rough time these past few months and I'll be teeing up on a course this week that's still to be kind to me," Campbell said

Golf: Another horror day for Campbell
8:52AM Friday April 04, 2008

Michael Campbell's return to golf in the United States has started in horrific fashion after shooting a nine-over 81 in the first round of the Houston Open this morning (NZ time).

New Zealander Campbell, in his only warmup tournament ahead of the Masters at Augusta next week, ended a forgettable round at the Redstone Golf Club with triple-bogey seven on the 18th hole.

It completed a back nine that included five bogeys and left him second-last of the completed scores midway through round one. He was one-over at the turn.

The 2005 US Open champion has played little golf this season, managing just seven rounds of competition between finishing 70th in the Qatar Masters in January and withdrawing after an opening round of 84 in the Malaysian Open last month.

It was Campbell's first tournament in the United States since last August.

He entered last week's New Orleans Classic in the US but suffered a neck injury while contesting the pro-am and withdrew after just three holes.

Golf: Another missed cut for Campbell
6:20PM Friday December 14, 2007

SYDNEY - Two years ago New Zealand golfer Michael Campbell was king of the world.

He'd stared down Tiger Woods to win the US Open and was the world matchplay champion.

Now he is playing like a weekend hacker.

Campbell shot horrendous opening rounds of 78 and 80 at The Australian Golf Club in Sydney, a course where he is a member.

His sorry form comes two weeks after he suffered the indignity of missing the cut after rounds of 73 and 76 in the New Zealand Open.

That was made even more painful by the fact that his country's only other major winner, 71-year-old Bob Charles, not only made the cut but finished in a tie for 23rd after beating his age three times along the way.

And the week before that Campbell bombed his way to an 84 in the second round of the Australian Masters at Huntingdale.

Campbell, who has a house not far from this course, is a popular figure in Australia.

He was also one of four players on the promotional poster for the Australian Open.

AdvertisementBut he felt anything but a pinup today as he stumbled to an outward nine of 42.

After missing the fairway by miles with his tee shot down the 10th, his first hole, he slammed his driver into the bag, a rare show of temper from the good natured New Zealander.

He held things together with six successive pars, but then bogeyed two of the last three holes and signed for an 80.

Not surprisingl ...

Very true. Cambo not having a great time at the moment -- must admit that. Luckily there are other Kiwis doing quite well but Michael needs to pick his game up a bit here. Perhaps 2008 will hold a better year for him.

Don't waste your time with Ron mate, he's one of those blokes whose glass is always half empty, never half full.
Probably plays off a 27 handicap, or has only read about golf and never played.

Re:Michael Campbell is through Reply to this message
Think you maybe forgetting the 90's where Michael had a quiet patch where nothing much was happening for him but I heard it took him a few years before he started winning again and won that American Open. So this has happened before where he went on a downward slide. But look what he came back to win. Could happen again, you don't know. Thats golf sometimes.

While it doesn't look likely right now, nothing in sports is impossible. Stranger things have happened.
