Despite your semi-literate and mean spirited derision, Ron, Michael's third round wasn't too bad. 2 birdies three bogeys. I agree he's not setting the world on fire at present, but as the TV commentators have observed, he is mercurial — when he's hot he's hot, when he's not he's not. The why of this is a mystery, but a reality.
He won't win The Open this year, neither will Tiger, but your contention is that Michael will NEVER win again and never is a very long time. It's taken a new putter to put Sergio back in the frame, it'll only take something to click with Michael and he will win again. Until then I'm sure you will amuse yourself and outrage others with your myopic view of things. And I will continue to struggle to understand what possible joy you can take from unleashing your bile in this way.
Finally, in the unlikely event that Michael does not win again, I'll still consider his US Open and World Matchplay victories — and the pride many Kiwis felt when he did this — to be up there with NZ's great sporting moments. He will be remembered for this and deservedly so. He may well inspire a new generation of NZ golfers.
What will you be remembered for? Who will you inspire? |

Ten shots separating 70 players, with bad weather closing in............it's anybody's game!
sergio garcia - 9 under par position 1st after 3 rounds
jon bevan - 12 over par position 70th after 3 rounds
i think that is a bit more than 10 shots...
(michael campbell is sitting in 50th place, 15 shots off the pace) |

Michael Campbell has had a dramatic drop of form in his second round at the British Golf Open.
The New Zealand number one has carded a massive seven over par to drop from three under after the first day, to four over after two days.
He is just inside the cut approaching the end of the day, a share of 61st.
Campbell said it has been a fairly indifferent day.
"I didn't play that badly, but if you hit a few shots off line you get penalised. I hit the ball into the bunker today three or four times and got penalised for it." |

| This is getting Pathetic. MC has 1 (one) good round at the open and all I here is how he has turned the corner, and how MZ gets on the interviews and says yes Im back, blah blah. Then his pathetic 2nd round today follows that up. He is just an absolutle plain embarrassment to New Zealand. Give it up MC, you are a boy amongst men. Do you have no pride man! retire! |

| I appreciate that John, I'm only addressing the guys (mostly non-achievers) who spend their lives knocking others who are more successful. |

| "Had" talent is the keyword. Hes had a golf mental breakdown, one in which he can not come back from. |

| It's another fair bet that when they're calling out the names of sporting millionaires, MC will get a mention but poor old newzealandron is an also-ran. Talent is talent pal. |

| It's a fair bet that Michael Campbell could play 18 holes with a hockey stick and beat all of the denigrating dummies who are knocking him in these threads. Week after week of absolute garbage - give it a miss guys! |

Most of us, with the notable exception of Ron, will be disappointed with Michael's closing 79. But as Statsy points out he wasn't Robinson Crusoe - many players were brought to their knees by this course where a shot just two meters off-line could end up unplayable and two putts on any green were applaudable. The few shots we saw of Michael showed him hitting excellent shots but shaving the hole with putts. Again he wasn't alone in this. As you all know, golf is a game of degrees and Michael appears to be a couple of degrees off kilter at present, that's all. In his latest group email he tells us he is working on swing changes aimed to give him greater consistency. Whenever a golfer is working on swing changes the results are always erratic and most often accompanied by a period of poor performances. True champions emerge as better players. I remain confident Michael will as well.
By the way, as an 8 handicapper, I'd love to play Oakmont and try to break 100. Imagine facing a 288 yard par three into the wind with unplayable lies all around!? Scary.

| BTW most players got 1, 2 or 3 over par for the 1st hole. And no-one is really carding great scores with the exception of a hand full. And MC's score is no where near the worst on the day. Several have hit over 80. |

You are right he is letting his clubs do the talking "And they're saying" Hey I Stink!
But credit where credit is due. He made the cut, and for MC I guess this just has to be his goal now, if he makes the cup its a miracle and almost could be considered a win for him! |

Golf: Campbell saves worst for last
New 8:35AM Monday June 18, 2007
US Open golf
Golf: Campbell off the pace
Golf: Baddeley bolts from pack to take lead
New Zealand golfer Michael Campbell saved his worst until last to tumble backwards at the US Open today.
Campbell carded a closing round of nine over-par 79 at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania to enter the clubhouse tied for 59th.
Having started the year's second major with rounds of 73, 77 and 75, Campbell needed something extraordinary today to thrust himself up the leaderboard.
Instead, he found the going tough, and struggled to get any momentum after posting a bogey five at the first hole.
Another five bogeys followed while the 2005 US Open champion's card included two double bogeys and a lone birdie, at the par-three 13th.

| i think the greens will get harder to play tomorrow and it will be hard for people to go under par. Tigre's comments after he finished "any good 10 handicapper wouldn't get under 100 for the round" |
