| How can you consider golf a sport? Golf does not require athletic ability. Standing perfectly still while hitting a perfectly still ball is not athletic, but it does take skill to measure the distance. Skill and athleticism are not the same thing. Golf can be played by just about any person at any age. Golfers don't compete. Yes, they compare their scores to other golfers to see who is the winner, but there is no actual competing like a real sport requires. Your opponent can do nothing to stop or distract you. There is no real defense or competitive battle between two players. You watch your opponent, hit the ball, then you try to do it better then him. In a real sport like tennis, basketball, football, hockey, baseball, soccer, boxing etc. have real competing where they can physically and mentally alter their opponent's success and strategy. Golf is a competition where you compare scores to see who did better. It's nowhere near a sport. |

| Golf is the Ultimate Sport Played with a Ball and a Club not a Racquet , the skill to Place the Ball, to judge distance, and to beat an opponent over a Number of days of Play make it a game where Fitness is required , and apart from John Daly you very rearly see Golfers Behaving Baddly |

Golf is a game--one that I like to play-but still a game. Sports, imo, must involve some type of aerobic or anaerobic exertion.
But a bigger reason is that true sports involve an instant, interactive action-reaction between competitors,ie the other player's actions affect how one responds, not so in golf.
Also, name one sport where you can smoke while playing?
How about one where a fat 40 yr old could be in the top 50 in the world?? |

Lte's finish this stupid arguement once and for all shall we?
Websters dictioary defines a sport as:
1.an athletic activity or game, requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as football, racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, etc.
2. a particular form of this, esp. in the out of doors.
3. diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime.
So Case CLOSED!! |

| I was in a Hotel (Hilton-Auckland) gymnasium and asked the only other guy in the gym if I could switch the TV to watch Golf and was told Oh no, not golf! How about something with tackling?! Be advised this is how the idea of Tackle Golf began. Do not laugh! One day, we will be watching TACKLE GOLF! I can just see a tackle made on the 17th Island Green of the TPC at Sawgrass and watching them fall into the lake!! |

| I think a few would know it was tongue in cheek. lol. Good to see a variety of responses though, we all have our differing points of view, be a boring world if we all thought the same. My personal picture of sport would be any game/activity being of a mental/physical/competiti ve nature could be classed as a 'sport'..Personally I have played a variety of sports (Aussie rules, soccer, tennis, squash, cricket, darts, table tennis and now golf) not a champion at any of them but love the competition... |

Wow since i started up this topic I have received some fascinating responses.
I would like to confess I was being tongue in cheek.
I am aware that a number of Sporting associations acknowledge Golf (and billards and Equestrian too) as Sports. And that's revelant.
I just view sports to be of athletic endeavours as would most people i'm sure.
Anyway thanks folks for your input and let's hope it will be a memorable British open coming up. |

| Air sports, billiards, bridge, chess, motorcycle racing, and powerboating are all recognized as sports by the International Olympic Committee. Golf definately falls into one of the categories of sport. Sport can be defined as mental sport or physical sport. Ummm getting someone to tackle a golfer in the process of hitting is like a league player tackling a goal kicker or penalty kicker in the process of kicking the ball...yea right lol. I agree aquaman609.. |

Golf would be much more exciting if opposing golfers could tackle a member in their group while the golfer was trying to hit a shot or putt. Right now, it is toooo subtle for a spectator sport unless you play it yourself and can appreciate the great amount of skill and consistency the tour players have. Yet thousands turn out to see the best players play but those days may be on the way out?!
I think someone should invent tackel golf!! |

what a ridiculous question.
it requires both mental and physical ability, and is highly competetive. name any reason why it is not a sport and i'll answer it. |

| No I cannot agree. Golf is NOT A SPORT. You cannot base it on just a swing of a club or walking distances for it to qualify as a sport. It's a great game and most enjoyable one at that. |

| I've played most sports and golf is the most difficult by far. Not only the mental side but during the course of 18 holes most golfers would walk at least 7k's. The dynamics of the swing causes many injuries over time. And if you've ever played match play golf you'll know what real pressure is. |

There was a study done a few years back that showed the enourmous strain placed on the body of a professional golfer, the numbers were right up there with weight lifters and runners.
i suppose it does come back to definition, what is a game vs what is sport. |
