I hope to hell Harley does last another 2-3 years but I see that as unlikely. I am sure that in his mind he would like to but as he is already starting to find out things get a lot tougher every year past 30. His slow start to the season this year can probably be attributed to this.
I would love more than anything to have Egan fit again. I sometimes imagine what our defence would have been over the last few years with him included. To me Egan was coming into the form of his career just when he did his injury. I have been reading eagerly each update on Egan and it must be said he faces an uphill battle even to play AFL again. He is optimistic after his fourth surgery that he will be able to make it back but whether it heals and cant take a full load again is anyone's guess. He was told after his 3rd surgery that he would never play football again. I sure hope the guy was wrong!
I have been enjoying watching Lonergan down back and think he has done a sterling job so far but I like him just as much up forward. It would be nice to still have the numbers in defence to keep him forward. |

Lets look at the future our of defenders. Over the next couple may lose Scarlett & Milburn, but Harley has said he would like to play on another 2 or 3 yrs if his knees hold up because while the team is winning, he feels he could extend his playing career. All going well Hunt will be right for rnd 1 next yr, and Egan is making progress - he said he still has a slight limp but its getting better. If he is back mid next yr then it could be good for the future of our defense. A fit Egan will hold down a key position spot.
Gillies is one of the kids coming through and seen as a long term prospect, look for Lonergan to play more as a defender and move back to where he started.
Not too worried about things just yet - see how things go. |

| I can't remember too much of his game from the g/f because I was so damn frustrated with the inability of our forwards to kick goals that I just assumed it was matter of time before our defense gave way. Don't get me wrong I still think he is valuable member of the team, I am just concerned that with much of our backline approaching retirement Taylor doesn't look mature enough to take over. The fact he is only in his second year is kinda my point, we are going to need some more experience down there when the others (Scarlett, Harley, Milburn) retire. |

| Well he was outmarked by by a skinnier, less experienced Taylor Walker from the Crows a couple of times. I'd be very worried if Scarlett had to move up the ground and there was no cover from Milburn etc. Needs to learn a lot about being the defender in one on ones but as you say, it is only his second year. |

Taylor does need time to develop but the thought of him marshalling the backline in just a couple of years taking over from Scarlett sends shivers down my spine. Perhaps that will change as he develops and gains more confidence and takes ownership of his position.
I think he is alright in marking contest when others are around. It is the one on one situation where I think he is a bit suspect. In particular, Rnd 1 against Hawthorn when they came back in the last quarter. I don’t know if it was just the added intensity from Hawthorn but he looked extremely flat footed and nervous whenever the ball came in to a one on one situation. |

I've actually been rather impressed by Taylor over the past season & a bit. We need to remember that he is only in his 2nd season of AFL level footy, and when he was playing back in Perth he did also play forward, so this looks like his 1st full time roll in defense.
Last yr his roll looked more to be as a direct replacement for Egan, but this yr with Egan still out, then Hunt being done for the season his is the 2nd tall behind Scarlett down back and his roll looks to have changed a little. I also think they are grooming him now to take over from Scarlett.
As for his marking contests, I remember the match against Freo last yr in Perth. 10 seconds on the clck, Freo bomb it in long & from the middle of the pack Taylor takes the cleanest of all marks and sealing the game for us. He is still learning and will get better - he can be frustrating at times like in the g/f, but he wasn't the only guy at fault that day. Be interesting to look at him again in 12months time with another yr & another preseason under his belt. |

| What are everyones thoughts on this young cats defender? Personally he makes me extremely nervous in defense especially when the situation becomes one on one. It seems half the time he slips or falls at the crucial stage and does not even so much as provide a marking contest. He also seems more settled with both Scarlett and Harley in the team. It scares me a bit to think he will be our key defender in a few years. |
