Cats in the cradle Reply to this message
GEELONG says it has captured the mix of draftees it targeted over the off-season, taking three mid-sized players at yesterday's rookie draft.

The Cats selected the speedy Adam Varcoe, brother of grand final player Travis, ahead of nuggety half-back duo Bryn Weadon and Tom Allwright.

"Overall we've got two key position players, two forwards and four other players that can play midfield and defence," Cats recruiter Stephen Wells said after the draft yesterday.

Varcoe, taken at pick 15, was n likely national draft pick until a season-ending knee injury in March.

"He was playing some good football for Central Districts and also in the South Australian under-18 team in their trial games earlier this year," Wells said.

"He's got fantastic skill and speed ... a midfield, small forward type."

Both Weadon, of Ballarat, and Tasmanian Allwright are strongly-built half-back cum midfielders.

Wells said Weadon was a strong runner, while the 188cm Allwright was a good size for a midfielder.

Geelong will be able to promote a player off its rookie list, which also includes Shane Mumford and Ranga Ediriwickrama, when it places Matthew Egan on the long-term injury list.

With ruckman Mumford promoted for AFL games last year, the trio is unlikely to see senior action in the near future.

"We draft them for the long-term ... we're just hoping in the next couple of years they can play well enough to force their way up onto the senior list," Wells said.

Allwright, a life-long Cat fan, was on cloud nine yesterday.

"It's a very pleasant surprise, it felt like I was flying when I heard my name called out this morning," he said.

"It's going to be daunting but exciting as well.

"I just hope I can get down there and prove myself over the off-season."
