| As an essendon member and lifelong follower I was heartened to see the improvement with some of our younger players but a preseason is not the actual season. I will reserve judgement although I do think we might just see a somewhat rejuvenated lineup |

| hey King. Yeah your right that we cant get too carried away at preseason time. The most pleasing thing for me though is that the players are really adapting to the game plan and are working hard as a team and supporting each other. Also, with all the talk about our youngens being pretty ordinary, has been nice to see them show the talent i knew was there. Its the kids in their 1st, 2nd and 3rd years that have been doing the majority of the work. This year will be exciting like we have been saying, but more importantly the future is looking bright. |

| auswatto - yep without getting carried away like others .. the bombers are doing nicely. Showing some of the youngsters the way Knights wants them to play and to taste what senior football is about! also getting to play alongside players like Lucas, Michael and co. will do wonders for their confidence and will only make them better for the real thing! |

Have to agree with that... was happy to see the young kids listening to what the older players have had to say... am looking forward to when lloyd and fletcher come back into the squad and watch the input that Matthew Knights will have with them... Was also pleased to see Jobe Watson taking a new page with the younger players...
Fingers crossed for a good year... |

Plenty more positive signs coming out of last night. NAB cup or not, Bulldogs tired after last week or not, they played a good brand of footy again. Solid in defense, hard running out of the back and through the centre, good defensive pressure all over the ground, and plenty of potency up front. Still have players to come back that will add to that. A few of the players like McVeigh and Welsh looked a little rusty in their first match, but improved nicely through the night. I think Knights plan of rotating the team through the NAB cup and trying to get 2 or 3 games into the older players and plenty of game time for the young guys is really working well.
Its a good sign that its going to be very tough to pick a best 22 come round 1 and thats the whole aim of this pre season campaign. |

| Yes, we fell down badly in the back line with some schoolboy mistakes, when you get to that standard, you dont drop easy marks. We were also outshone by the indigineous guys, the bombers have tapped into and endless supply of talent up the north-end. |

your right balony, the Lions did have a very young side also. I probably mean more game time experience. Both sides had 4 rookies and im not sure about Lions but bombers had i think 8 first gamers. But alot of the other bomber players have had less than 20 games. We are a little behind the Lions development where alot of the young guys are more like 20-50 games.
But was exciting to see some good young talent play well for the bombers either way. Certainly not saying we are up for a premiership or Lions will struggle. Just highlighted again that the bombers young talent is quite a bit better than many think...imo. |

"We had a younger, more inexperienced side than the Lions", I thought the teams were relatively even considering the lions had most their first year players, and unproven players playing. Lions had a very weak side.
I think the result highlighted the lack of the lions match time (i.e. practice matches) due to the wet weather in qld.
The lions looked well underdone... but I guess matthews knew that would be the case, hence letting leppa coach for the night.
Saying that, I did like the development of some of the bombers rookies, and the return to form of Mcphee. Their run and carry out of defence was excellent... I would be happy at this stage if I were a supporter.
Good game guys... well deserved win |

| kinger thats where you're wrong, Des does have a team but he has to keep it quiet because it may give away the fact that he has an obsession for Quentin Lynch. |

actually got time to watch the game last night! was quite pleased with the endeavour of the younger players! Dempsey looks like a good flashy player who will get even better iwth more experience (stop kicking hte ball across goal and putting too much pressure on his target)
Gumbleton will be out for 5-6 weeks with a hammy which is bad news, he has a history of them so hopefully he will recovery quickly and they will be able to get good use of him
very early in the year but they are looking promising :) |

| gee leica/Des its easy to bag every team in the league when you don't have the guts to support the one team all the way from the very first scratch match to the end of their season |

| your a tool anyway so forgive me if i dont take your comments too seriously. Perhaps you should be putting on some good wages if your so sure of how the year will develop. The Bombers, like last year, are as serious a contender for the 8 as teams such as the Lions, Crows, Bullies, Swans, Freo. We will see wont we. |

Well, after all the anticipation and a long wait, we finally had our first taste of footy action for 2008. Cant read too much into things, but i really liked the way our young side went about things tonight. We had a younger, more inexperienced side than the Lions, and we won the game comfortably. No help from the umpies either i might add.
Very impressive the way they ran hard off the backline and carried in numbers through the midfield. Houli, Dempsey, Reimers, Monfries and Dyson all showed good signs from half back through the centre. Also some good signs from first gamers and rookies, especially Magin.
All in all, a good solid start to 2008 and i will continue with my opinion that the bombers are alot better than most have been suggesting and are still a real chance for the 8 this year. |
