No, dont think so now, but then couldnt have predicted the string of injuries to a large portion of an already inexperienced side. I also said in a thread that we would need to be pray to the injury gods for some good luck necause we couldnt afford to lose one or 2 of our better players. We lost 13, with probably 10 of those in the best 22. I will be happy with a solid second half of the year, but the way things stand would obviously prefer not too many wins but just some tough, tight encounters. Has been pretty tough watching out a few of the matches i will have to admit.

2008 campaign underway (PREVIEW)
Well, after all the anticipation and a long wait, we finally had our first taste of footy action for 2008. Cant read too much into things, but i really liked the way our young side went about things tonight. We had a younger, more inexperienced side than the Lions, and we won the game comfortably. No help from the umpies either i might add.
Very impressive the way they ran hard off the backline and carried in numbers through the midfield. Houli, Dempsey, Reimers, Monfries and Dyson all showed good signs from half back through the centre. Also some good signs from first gamers and rookies, especially Magin.
All in all, a good solid start to 2008 and i will continue with my opinion that the bombers are alot better than most have been suggesting and are still a real chance for the 8 this year.

U STILL THINK THEY R A REAL CHANCE 4 THE 8 ?? HOW ABOUT JUST AVOIDING THE SPOON ?

No worries aus , hate to see the younguns injured , and of course the oldies as well , yep our young beau muston stuffed his knee again , hope the kid is able to come back , and the suprises are all part of the footy eh , if we took it too serious , we may as well go to soccor and chuck darts or rocks at each other , go hawks.

cheers carrick, bad luck for the young fella but havn't heard how bad it is yet. Wasnt sure if you were a footy fan or just one of the muck stirers. Dont mind a bit of fun, and as a Hawks fan you can afford to dish it out a bit more at the mo. But the year hasnt started yet and i have a feeling there will be a few surprises again this year!!

In some unfortunate news, Jay Neagle has done some damage to his ankle in his last preseason hitout with bendigo. Its a real pity for the young man, as he has had no luck with injuries and has loads of talent. Hopefully will be just a minor niggle and he can get the first 3 or 4 games in for Bendigo and maybe push for selection to seniors by 5 or 6 games in.

Re:2008 campaign underway Reply to this message
not sure GT, but think he kicked 2 second half goals. They had a pretty young spine for much of the match, and we know Lucas is traditionaly not as consistant as Lloyd, but when he is on, gotta love him.
Whatever carrick whoever. Go support your own team whoever that might be. Bombers will provide excitement for their fans and build a foundation for the next 4 to 5 years when they should be getting towards their peak with the current list. Will they make the finals? I dont know. Do i think they will? Well actually i think they will have a great crack at the 8 and are a decent chance. I have them in my top 8, but its will be tough work. And with the comp so close you cant seriously say they are no chance!!

Re:2008 campaign underway Reply to this message
whatever way you look at it Muzza, the future is looking good for the bombers. Alot of those young guys are already showing signs (Ryder and Neagle for sure, Maybe Johns, Gumbleton just needs to stop growing and get a bit more muscle on, Lee needs a better break with injuries). Those guys will be getting close to prime in the next 2 to 3 years when Lloyd, Lucas, Fletch and Mal should be close to retirement. Top that off with some good picks this year, particularly Pears and Myers. Both look like they will play this year and in a few years should be well and truly up and running, and they are versatile. Oh, and then there is Daniher, that kid can play.
The bombers have handled the list nicely the last few years, and i think we will see the rewards of this over the next 5 years atleast.

MY GOD SOMEONE WHO HAS A BRAIN. NOT LIKE KING A DOPE. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT THE YOUNG ONES NEED A COUPLE OF YEARS AND BY THAT TIME LLOYD, FLETCH AND LUCAS WILL BE GONE. HOPEFULLY WE WONT FALL BAACK INTO PICKING UP CROOKS LIKE WE DID IN THE LAST 5 YEARS OR HANGING ON TO THEM FOR TO LONG

Re:2008 campaign underway Reply to this message
yeah King, Lloyd and Fletcher definately only played first half. Lloyd was having his first run for the year and spilled a few marks and missed a few shots he would normaly slot apparently.
Have heard from a few Weagles and Bomber supporters that both sides played very well, and the weagles supporters actually thought we were the better of the teams for most of match. Also good to hear them say that we should be right in the mix if our young brigade can keep playing like that.
And yes, apparently Houli had another great game, along with Ryder, Stanton, Watson and Nash. Davey was very good in first half and put the pressure on like early last year, but slipped out of the game a bit 2nd half. Good to see the youngens starting to step up consistantly.

Re:2008 campaign underway Reply to this message
from reports it was a closely fought game! unfortuantely a silly 50m penalty was given away to give the weagles the victory.

The local rags over here are stating the eagles were too good (as usual) so must mean the bombers are going to be right up there ;)

Houli got good wraps from the game too :)

auswatto - did Lloyd only play half a game? The local rag is writing up how good Spangler was cos after Lloyd played a good first 10minutes and did nothing for the rest of the game. (gotta love biased media!)

Re:2008 campaign underway Reply to this message
btw, was great to hear Brent Stanton took BOG honours. 36 posis, 9 marks and 4 goals. This kid was stepping it up last year before some niggly injuries slowed him down second half of year. I think we can expect big things from Stants this year and who knows, could be a Brownlow smokey!!

Re:2008 campaign underway Reply to this message
Sounds like they played pretty well against a close to full strength West Coast at Subi. Had an almost game winning lead in 3rd quarter, but the Weagles came back and one it in a tight one. What else do you expect from a bombers eagles clash.
Unfortunately Pev gave away a free and then stupid 50m pen to give them a 6 point lead and the win. Very good signs though against a side i still see as a real top 4 chance. And with no Mal, and Fletch and Lloyd sat out second half, must have been a few youngens in the spine. Mind you Hansen kicked 4 in that time i think.
All in all, a great preseason for the bombers. Couldnt have prepared them any better for the season and i cant wait for a fortnight to see em against the roos, who we haven't beaten for a while. Should be a great match and i expect to start off the season with 4 points. Go Bombers!!

Re:2008 campaign underway Reply to this message
well, the game against the Saints was pretty good and should still leave bomber fans excited about the future. This game was much more akin to a h & a game and the young bombers still looked pretty good and took it up to a much more experienced midfield. They didnt look quite as sharp and the pressure was much more intense, but there were plenty of good signs. In particular the form of Brent Stanton who looks like he has his fitness back, and boy did he show some of the other boys how to deliver the footy off either foot. Of all the players rotated, thought the biggest loss of impact was actually Houli, and i reckon he will be in the starting line up next week and for round 1.
