Re:New look Bombers quad Reply to this message
this year we will be better than most think, but who knows where we will finish. Hird was good last year, but not so good early, where we won alot of our games on the back of hard running from the likes of Winderlich, Stanton, Davey, ect. The impact of the injuries to those three player mid season along with hird were what dropped us just out of the finals race. Many forget we finished 6 points out of the 8 and only 3 games from the hawks in 5th.
Next year is very unknown but i dont think the bombers can be written off at this stage. Better to be underdogs anyway though i suppose.

Re:New look Bombers quad Reply to this message
I'm not yet convinced... but agree it is far too early to call. I've placed the bombers at either 14th or 15th with the dees, coz I think they are a wrok in progress, some of their kids will take another year or two, and simply, there has been just too much upheaval in the last few months which will need to settle down first before any real success comes. Also, whilst the bombers were competitive for many games in 07, for many that I saw, it was largely hirdy that kept you guys in it (perhaps the best final year of a veteran that I've ever seen), without him, I'm not so sure of the competitiveness. Also, re: the hard work on the dunes, I feel that will hurt you guys towards the end of the year and the benefits of such training probably won't be realised till 09.

Re:New look Bombers quad Reply to this message
the bombers will be a work in process but won't finish bottom like everyone else is saying :)

they are working hard on those perceived weaknesses and once they have got the fitness up and able to run out games ... look out :)

this is worst Bombers side since the 70s I cant wait until they get rid of Knights, Hardwick would have been a much better person to coach the current squad good luck Knights your going to need it

Re:New look Bombers quad Reply to this message
different type of tough! and out of those 3 kerr is the only one that can give it out physically

most teams develop a side so they don't rely on a couple of players look at the Eagles of 92 and 94 they had more then 3 good players and would beat the current crop.

and the eagles do run around sides if you notice the number of handballs, the eagles play a style that they get the ball and they run with it looking to hand ball it to a player running past. and they rely on the players like Braun to block the oponents of cuz and co. so they can run without being tackled! and if they were physical they wouldn't be complaining of other teams taking them, on in those stakes

Re:New look Bombers quad Reply to this message
your joking kerr , judd and cousins are tough woosha doesnt play players that run around the sides thats why the eagles have been so good . lets not forget its only injuries to that 3 that cost them from playing in 3 grannys in a row . no team can afford to have there best 3 players out in the finals , thou the cats were the class team of the year and deserved the flag .

Re:New look Bombers quad Reply to this message
knights was a soft player , sheedy was a tough player , mathews was a tough player , eade was a running player so the dogs play a running game . coaches usually have teams that play like they did as the examples above prove .

Re:New look Bombers quad Reply to this message
and your right king. He has faced our weakness front on and is concentrating on turning that around. Whether it works or not we wont know til mid next year. But the plan is really one for the next few years. As for toughness, think there is a real hunger in the side for success again and can see them coming out firing next year. Plenty of competition for places by alot of young guys. As far as knighter, he would have kicked your a r s e on the footy field and any other who posts on here. No fan of the tiges, and my dads a pies fan, but we both had alot of respect for knights game.

Re:New look Bombers quad Reply to this message
funny how the knockers are there so far from the season. He hasnt even coached a game yet, and people are discounting him and the bombers. Could be a few on here made to look like fools, and wont be the first time for many of them :). As for bottom 4, cant see that happening with the key positions they have and the 20-21 year olds with another year under their belts. They will only get better. Last year we were pushing for the 8 and beat or pushed nearly all the top teams. So we will see. Its a pretty close comp after Geelong.

Re:New look Bombers quad Reply to this message
we will see!

at least he is being proactive by looking at the weakness of the team and working on them! Fitness and running out games has been the problem of the team in the past couple of seasons. We worked on the lack of pace and have now got some pacey players now it is just working on getting the a sustained effort through a whole game

Re:New look Bombers quad Reply to this message
cont.......

The players have had most of the schedule handed out to them with a few details being held back. "That might be the surprise for us," Lloyd said.

Lloyd spent more time playing up the ground last year, even playing in the midfield at times. Knights has already indicated he thinks Lloyd is best in attack and the captain yesterday agreed.

"I feel I play better footy (closer to goal)," Lloyd said, "but I understand that you can't be one-dimensional as a side. It will probably be 80-20 over the course of the year.

"I'll play closer to goal most of the time but with Scott Lucas in the form he's been in over the past few years, he'll play a similar role, and hopefully we'll have Scott Gumbleton playing that lead-up role next year."

The raft of changes at Windy Hill has extended to guernsey numbers, with midfielder Brent Stanton taking over James Hird's No. 5. Jay Neagle will wear the No. 1 once worn by his father, Merv, while Jay Nash will take over 17.

Lloyd said Hird had told Knights during a recent meeting that he wanted to see his old number handed on rather than retired, and expressed a preference for Stanton.

"We reckon he'll be one of our key leaders in the coming years," Lloyd said.

ESSENDON'S skill levels last year were more than once the subject of a Kevin Sheedy lament. Fans shared the pain.

The performance of most AFL players have increased in recent years with concentrated training and coaching; so, too, the ability to execute those skills under pressure. The cream on the cake is the ability to perform under pressure and when fatigued.

Essendon captain Matthew Lloyd said yesterday that in pre-season training under new coach Matthew Knights there had been an emphasis both on executing skills when fatigued and defence.

Lloyd said the side was training at the Carlton ground once a week to replicate the sort of extra running that was needed on bigger grounds such as the MCG.

"We're more (about) getting our running base during the skill work, when you're under fatigue — which is an area where we've been pretty poor over the last two or three years," Lloyd said.

When asked about the main difference so far between Sheedy and Knights, Lloyd replied: "The intensity of the training; he demands nothing but 100% on the training track.

"We had too many goals kicked against us, so there's a massive emphasis on the defensive part of our game."

The Dons will experience more coping with fatigue during a training camp in Tasmania next week. Included on the schedule is an assault on sand dunes described by high-performance manager John Quinn as "the biggest I've ever seen in my life".

The Henty Dunes are on a stretch of coast near Strahan, on Tasmania's west coast. Asked to compare them to the Portsea dunes made famous by legendary athletics coach Percy Cerutty and his famous pupil Herb Elliott, Quinn said: "It blows them away."
