Commonwealth Bank has been making billion dollar profits for the last 20 years, and continued to do so through the pilots' strike and Asian slump of the mid 90s.
the Australian $$$ is diving because of the high level of debt held in Australia , which is now all credit card generated, but will have new debtors in the Qld govt and NSW govt. But, If people want to have a $20000 card debt/s with 18% interest, the banks will continue to make huge profits , and the Australian $$$ will continue to dive during time of global recession |

Australia's budget surplus has been slashed from
$20+ Billion to just $5.4Billion. That never happened when the Asian Crisis hit Australia just grew.
At this rate Comm Bank will have a bigger profit than Australia Surplus.
Aren't you slightly concerned Chucker ?? |

CommSec chief economist Craig James said fears of a global recession hit the commodities-driven Australian dollar as other major currencies also faltered against the US dollar.
"The general theme was fear of global recession," he said this morning.
"If you're heading towards a significant downturn and slipping economic growth, then you're likely to use less oil and base metals and as a result there would be less demand for Australian dollars and less demand for the commodities Australia produces.
"People are fearful of countries with high debt and current account deficits ... there's a lot against the Aussie.
"There's not a lot pushing the currency higher."
The Australian dollar's low point on Friday night coincided with sharp falls on US equity markets, with the key Dow Jones Industrial Average shedding 3.59 per cent and the broader Standard and Poor's 500 losing 3.45 per cent. |

Otrright that isn't the case. The wporld markets targetted the Australian dollar because they knew our financial team is weak.
That isn't what I think its what happened and is now well documented.
Read it on-line. |

Yesterday (5:38 pm)
Re:Good Budget (PREVIEW)
I actually think the the Australian dollar is the whipping post of the financial markets because the Financial managemnt of the country is now VERY weak.
And the world bl00dy knows it.
------------------------- ------------------------- ---------
What you think and what really happened is 2 different things mip. Most yankee investors sold off their ozzie $ and converted it to cash to pay their bills after over extending and getting into trouble with the subprime crisis. They had no choice to sell.
With investment of up to 30% of the Australian economy at times we are in trouble in some ways if the US investors decide to pull the pin as they have HAD to do with the ozzie dollar to protect their OWN interests. |

I also don't want to see the war lovin', bible bashin', muslim hatin', Elmer Fudd resemblin', walking economic disaster in charge!
The world needs Obama for both the economy and US international relations. Get the general public in the middle east on side with the yanks and the terrorists will find it harder to recruit. Hence the Paki and Saudi governments have endorsed Obama and Al Quaida (Spelling??) have made threats against him!
As (I think) Mip said, he is a new Bobby Kennedy. |

Don't know, but what I'm watching is quite good. They explained the voting system and have interviewed a few economic experts who explained what each candidate would mean to the economy (basically Obama or bust from all concerned!).
I think all coverage is pretty well the same isn't it? |

I'm breathing a little easier now with the US elections looking even more likely now to take it out.
Obama has a couple of crunch states under his belt, only really losing the unwinnable states so far - McCain now needs ALL of the 50-50 states remaining!
It's a complex voting system, but all indicators suggest it is an Obama win - thank christ!!!! |

| Of all the times to vote out a government, why oh why did Australia choose NOW!?! A volatile world economy requires a government that knows how to handle cash and isn't intent on going the popularist route just to win a bit of approval from the naive and unthinking! |

How Stupid is this guy :-
A Victorian man has been arrested in Cairns, after allegedly telling police there was a bomb on board a plane that had left the far north Queensland city last night.
It is alleged the 31-year-old called 000 about 11:00pm AEST last night and said there was a bomb on board a commercial flight from Cairns to Melbourne .
Police say the call was traced to a mobile phone registered to an address in Hampton Park in Victoria.
They called the number and a negotiator spoke to the man who surrendered himself to police a short time later.
He has been charged with the use of a carriage service for a hoax and is due to appear in the Cairns |

I very much doubt that a deal will be made. Here, as you know, any breach of planning permission is dealt with severely.
