I honestly think that I go to the supermarket 4 or 5 times a week. Not because I keep running out of beer (a common complaint in Sven's household), but also because my fridge was probably designed with a Midget in mind. I don't have a cellar where I could store enough food to see me through a nuclear winter and supermarkets are about 2-a-street. So no need to buy a weeks of shopping in one go. I like my bread fresh...
But I am surpised at the higher cost of the UK shopping trolley. Food is a lot more expensive here in the UK than in Europe for example. Maybe the shopping trolleys don't contain comparable items..? |

| When we were selling the Pontiac G8 to the Yanks, even with the exchange rate , they were $8k more here. And the yank ones had more in them standard. How can we export stuff cheaper than we can buy it here? We must be paying for it somehow. WA exports gas to China for 25c a litre , and yet we pay 63c here, and 86c up north where it comes from. They transport it down here ,and then back up north,is that logical? |

Hi all - big thanks to Tigrette for that answer - Funny about wanting to distinguish themselves from the labour movement in general as they actually started due to the shearers strikes and the wharf strikes in the late 19th Century (that's the 1800's for those of you who can't work it out).
Nev - your thread is gonski (what are you - some bloody minded troll type person??????) ;) |

Vegemite, Baked beans, Honey, cheese etc but I do understand what you're saying. |

Neville don';t be fooled. The UK shopping trolley is somewhat different to the Australian one. I bet people in the UK go to the supermarket twice as often as in Australia.
Even though the prices have not gone up the packaging is getting a lot smaller.
Example :- Deodorant. In Australia you get a can of Deodorant and even though the price has gone up its still 250g of squirt.
Now in the UK the cans at 130g. 2 bl00dy squirts and its gone. Big rip off. |

Thoughts anyone?
Probably too hard to spell. |

"The ALP adopted the formal name "Australian Labour Party" in 1908, but changed the spelling to "Labor" in 1912. While it is standard practice in Australian English both today and at the time to spell the word labour with a "u", the party was influenced by the United States labor movement and a prominent figure in the early history of the party, the North American–born King O'Malley, was successful in having the spelling "modernised".[19] The change also made it easier to distinguish references to the party from the labour movement in general.[20] Furthermore, the spelling "labor" had been acceptable in both British and Australian English in earlier periods."

Craig Kelly from Southern Sydney Retailer's Association said our grocery prices should be going down, not up.
"They can put one item up the front that appears to be a very good price but as soon as you move away from that item you're being ripped off on everything else you touch," he said.
"For some reason the ACCC refuses to acknowledge the facts and wants to keep its head buried in the sand."
We asked the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's Graeme Samuel why we are paying so much, particularly as he publicly declared "some commentators should take a Bex and a good lie down when it comes to the activities of major supermarkets".
Graeme Samuel emphatically refused our interview saying it was not the ACCC's job to monitor grocery prices.
Overall we found more than 90 per cent of the items we bought at Coles and Woolworths are more expensive than in the UK.
The total cost, our UK trolley is $105.25, compared with Woolworths at $131.85 and Coles at $135.20.

Why does this not surprise me? |

Australian shoppers pay up to $2000 extra a year for exactly the same items.
When Nick Stace, CEO of Choice, saw the results of Today Tonight's latest expose on the prices of everyday supermarket items he concluded we are being conned.
"It's incredibly expensive, your evidence shows that is exactly the case," he said.
"Vegemite for example, $2.99 in Australia, Coles and Woolworths.
"At Sainsbury's it is $2.54 and ASDA it is $2.86."
Nick said the supermarkets here, particularly Woolworths and Coles, have tried to deceive people really over the last few years by saying that consumers in Australia are getting good value for money.
To compare prices, we bought 31 food and grocery items, brand-names only, from Coles and Woolworths.
We chose the equivalent item from the UK's big 4 supermarkets.
Milo: in the UK it is $1.77, in Australia $3.26 at Coles and Woolworths.
Vegemite: the Brits enjoy it at $2.54 but even though it is made in Australia, we pay $2.99.
Sliced white bread: UK shoppers pay $1.63, we pay $3.89.
Litre of milk: $1.49 in the UK, at Coles $2.24, Woolies $2.09.
Dozen free-range eggs: $5.56 compared to $6.38 at Coles, $6.32 at Woolies.
Baked beans: In the UK cost $1.30 but $1.59 at Coles and Woolworths.
Butter: $2.50 in the UK against $4.22 at both Coles and Woolworths.
Sardines: jacked up by 152 per cent.
Dove soap: $2.10 in the UK, $4.49 here. |

Now here is the killer of the week.
On Friday 21st I had my cast removed from my wrist and the surgeon told me that he had been contacted by a female from somewhere (My workers comp mob in Sydney)and had been requested to write my medical certificate as follows.
Fit for restricted duties and "LEFTHAND" work only!
I have to apply for 5 jobs a week while studying, attending physio & rehab training in the gym.
I have to ask put yourself in the position of an employer and answer this question; Would you employ a person who is not going to be at work for the full amount of production time that you have employed that person for or would you employ the next qualified person for that position? I mean would you employ a person full time or part time knowing that the employee will not be at work most days as they have to go to rehab training, physio and othe medical appointments and that he/she is studying for a better employment prospect? Now if that applicant for the position doesn't inform you of these things do you then feel that he/she is not trustworthy? |

Griff relating to the other topic, yes you need to read Doug's posts about a new site cricketgrounds.net
As for labor I heard the reason why there was no u in the spelling but as I was not interested in the party after the last monumental stuff up I will never vote for them again. Keating's "resession we had to have", Hawke's "no child living in poverty" and K.rudd spending 65billion surpluss in under 12 months and sending us into over 200 billion deficit already and he hasn't been in power for a full 2 years yet. What are we going to be like when the full term is up for labor?
Not to mention the fact that since labor became the power to be in federal politics - all of our sports teams have started loosing at a rediculous rate. Is there something going on here??????? |
