If America go into Iran , I doubt very much if they will be able to drag any other country in to help.
Not after the FUBAR it's made in Iraq.
And of course, Iran knows that and plays on it. |

rebuild the refinery and break the pricing parity Ali. Simple as that.
Its time for action. Oil is crippling this country.
We can be self sufficient in 2 years and set our own price.
Thats a good idea I reckon. |

Who's going to refine it for you oh accursed one!
Australia used to have it's own refinery - COR.
Commonwealth Oil Refinery.
Liberal Prime Minister Menzies sold it to the accursed oil companies in the 1950's and successive liberal governments have instituted "World Parity Pricing" to the oil companies' benefit.
Which means that whatever the world oil market price is in Singapore - Then that's what they can charge here regardless of where the oil came from. |

Break the agreement....what are they going to do about it.
Not supply us.......we don't need their oil.
We could charge next to nothing then for fuel. |

I was told australia supplied something like 80% of its own oil and the reason why prices are as they are is cos australia signed up on the global agreement which forces them to pay what the global lot say they should pay - if that makes sense.
and if that is true that is bull *** ! |

YOur right WP.
In Australia I can't understand why we are self sufficient.
Same in the UK. |

Mip; much of the current inflation has been triggered by high energy prices and this is a global problem. Only last week one of the UK's energy suppliers announced rises of 22 and 18 per cent for gas and electricity respectively.
But it seems like the US are as much to blame as the OPEC countries. A bill to release 10% of the US oil reserves onto the market was defeated in the Senate.
Just look at these figures
(quote)The bill would have forced the sale of 10 percent of the emergency stockpile’s holdings, or 70 million barrels, on the open market over six months. Proceeds from the sales would have been used to buy an equivalent amount of heavy crude, which is cheaper.(unquote)
70 million barrels is 10% of the total feken reserve? What an incredibly insular attitude America has.
Perhaps they're cr@pping themselves about the situation in Iran. If McCain gets elected I reckon US forces will be in there within 6 months. And then it's "God bless America" and "God help the rest of the world. " |

its all cool mip, theres nothing wrong with differing points of view. I actually enjoy the banter our polar political views generate. How boring would life be if everyone agreed on all points?!
No thanks.
On the political front, what seems apparent to me is that big Kev is trying very hard to impress those overseas and to push Australia as a forward moving force on the global stage. The problem being that hes doing it in a time of not so much economic instability rather than economic apathy and this is tending to p!ss off a lot of the people that voted for him and the party.
I think the trust is still there in his ability to get the job done but he has had a few kicks up the kyber and that wouldnt be the ideal for him.
My views on whose doing o.k cabinet wise;
Penny Wong - climate change and water
Stephen Smith -foreign affairs
Martin Ferguson - resorces, energy and tourism
Joel Fitzgibbon - defence
and even Simon Crean aint doin too bad in trade.
Those to lift their game;
Wayne Swan (treasurer)and Lindsay Tanner (finance)
Two BIG ones there to be letting the team down a bit and really do need to lift their game.
And......regardless of her part in saying 'sorry' - Jenny Macklin needs to get a little more pro active and intouch with reality in her portfolio of 'families, housing, comm services and indig. affairs'
So, there you go.
And on a state level - Iemma needs to go and we need to hope that Carmel Tebbut changes her mind and wants to put her hand up for the job. I respect those that respect their families but the woman would be great in the position, no doubting it. |

Yes Loki I spelt it right but did you check up on me. They do spell it Labour in England.
I ask this question again because time has passed. I am actually interested in the views of previous posters now that time has marched on.
Not from an "I told you so" point of view.
More of a "How do you see it all now".
The only reason I come n here is to understand and enjoy others points of view even if they are totally contrary to mine. And how those view progress.
Also to have a chat about local current events. But it seems to have dried up now somewhat. I hope this thread has not run its course. |

mip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - you got it right!!
Labor - not labour. Finally!
Anyways, me thinks youve asked this at least twice before. You know my views but if inflation is where it is now or worse in 12 months, itd be a major shock. |

Look guys I know i rant a bit but I would love your feedback on how you all think labor is doing.
Is it that you all think its very average and therefore won't comment (ala if Australia lose at Cricket).
Or is it that I am just a pain in the a ss.
I would really like everyone to have a chat about where the econmy is at at the moment and general thoughts.
Any one care to comment ?? |

So Inflation is on the rise the reason according to Turnbull :-
Figures released today show that inflation surged ahead in the June quarter to stand at 4.5 per cent for the year, well ahead of economists' forecasts.
Mr Turnbull says the tax increase on pre-mixed drinks, is adding to the rising cost of living because CPI figures show the price of spirits rose by 6.1 per cent in the June quarter.
"One thing the Government could have done was choose to not put up the price of alcohol but it did and it has flowed into the inflation numbers," he said.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++
If he think inflation is bad now, its going to get very bad if the carbon emmissions stuff goes through.
The price of do-gooding is getting higher. |

The only reason I see for a magazine such as "Art Monthly " to justify the publication of a photo like this on its front page would be to encourage debate as to whether or not it can be considered art. But from the link I've read there seems to be no intention to provoke such a debate.

Should I feel flattered ? |
