Actually I'm surprised no one has mentioned McKenzie and Neil Hawke.
They were a good pair I think?

Whatsdoing
Have you ever seen any of the footage of the old quicks?
They looked far more terrifying than any of the bowlers I have seen in the last 40 years... You basically had a few blokes who were inately strong, because of the physical nature of life back then. They didnt get coached, much, didnt bother with the subtleties of swing and knew their job was to blast people out. They had the X factor!
See if you can dig up a still of Wes Hall bowling. He looked absolutely ferocious (and fantastic!), though suprisingly the old timers said he was no where near as fast as some of the Aussie quicks....
Maybe the look had something to do with the intimidation factor. |

Why are the 'old' bowlers scarier than the modern ones?
Helmet, face grill, forearm guard, chest guard, thigh pad, inner thigh pad, box, extra padded batting gloves...should I go on?
Modern batsmen go out to the crease with more protection than a Medievel knight. Maybe today's bowlers aren't as quick as yesteryear's, but there is more reason to their lack of 'scariness' than just pure speed.
And toby, there is more to bowling fast than just body type. Bowling is a skill that involves technique as well as power. |

Yes commentingtonbull
I never really thought through the complete list in the modern era let alone the golden age. So Garner, Roberts, etc fine.
No, I mean threatening to the body and brain rather than sheer pace.
I struggled with Thommo but realised that he was threatening as well as fast.
I guess I am talking about real fear.
Broken bones, life threatening perceptions and reality as well as real verbal agression.
Not sure how else to put it.
Kip
PS
I know
Charlie Grifiths comes uo to ball to Ted Dexter - Great bowler v great batsman but fear!

Is it danger men or fast me you are talking about? Let me add to this
You did not mention Andy Roberts - arguably the greatest of the WI quicks and probably the fastest.... though Malcolm Marshall might feature in that debate. Ian Chappell said that what really made him scary was that he had the ability to change his pace up (!) and deliver a really fast ball, seemingly with the same action!!!
Michael Holding (Whispering Death) was the most accurate and consitent of the lot. Not exactly terrifying though
Hadlee, Walsh, Harmison on your list have never bowled really fast. They are quick but probably never bowled at more than 150k. Hadlee was more like 140k, ball after ball, though he was very deceptive with his change of pace
Since the 70's when the measured Thommo we have been able to record the pace of each ball.
Lillee was never as fast as Thommo
Joel Garner and Ambrose used to bowl mostly at 140k - 145k. It was the angle that the ball came off the ground that really caused the terror
Marshall was consistently clocked as the fastest of the WI bowlers throughout the 80's.
Bishop was very inaccurate so he was largely ineffectual
I know of but never saw the old timers. Some of their bowling actions caught on the old films were absolutely incredible. I have no doubt they were absolutely terrifying - particularly as the batters had hardly any protection
Griffith and Wes Hall - were very erratic. The guys who faced Trueman, and Tyson never put them in the same league
Larwood - he must have been something to give the old Aussies a touch up! |

Of course the real fast ballers rely on threat and danger rather than just speed.
We are talking of bounce and agression.
Lee is a patsy inthis respect.
Thommo was a threat but not really.
McGrath a smart bowler
DANGER MEN
Lillee
Ambrose
Walsh
Marshall
Bishop
Griffith
Wes Hall
Trueman
Tyson
Larwood
Hadlee
Harmison
Nasty nasty men!!!
And others so forgive the omissions but I think you get my drift.

It is a problem comparing different eras but I believe Frank Tyson was the quickest.
I never saw him obviously but I have read dramatic stories.
Ritchie Benaud described him as the fastest that he had seen as did Don Bradman. I got the latter points off wikipedia.

| tobyrwn, I don't disagree with you at all. It is the myopic view that Australian's tend to share that "our" bowlers were the fastest ever, when this is not necessarily true. Lee is too inaccurate to scare anyone, as is Pakistan's Shohaib. The Windies were brutal in their attack back then and it was scary enough to watch on TV, let alone live at the SCG. It's a shame that they can't find anyone who is remotely in that mould for their current team. |

| kraavitz what i am trying to say is theres no athlete better for speed and power than the negro athlete in the world. The 100 metres is a perfect example of there speed and power . For aussies to say lee and thommo white athletes were quicker is hard to believe because in all sports around the world the black negro dominates overall in most . lee doesnt frighten batsmen like the windies did , there were even calls from some countries to only allow 3 fast bowlers in a team when the windies were at there best . love to know what speed holding , marshall and patterson were bowling at in there prime . they used to terroize india in india which australia has never done . |

tobyrwn, black negro - good one. That you mention it once is maybe permissable as an error, but twice shows you may be lacking in the definition of negro.
That said, yes, the Windies bowlers of their golden era would no doubt be some of the fastest in the history of the game. The fear that they instilled absolute fear in most batsmen with their pace and accuracy from both ends was incredible. Nowadays, any team (including Australia) would love to have two ultra-fast bowlers who ARE accurate and bowling consecutive overs. |

According to the devices they had back then and from what people say, Jeff bowled at the old 100 mile an hour mark which i think is a tad over 161km per hour.
If you look at Brett Lees average rate he tends to bowl at about 147km per hour. |

| Who is really the fastest bowler in history,,plenty of guys have gone through fast periods in their careers, but the stress of it makes it unsustanable year after year.I woner how fast Jeff Thomson was, back when speed testing was unreliable. |
