| Patrick Patterson (ask Tony Cozier)at Sabina Park against ENGLAND. Sylvester Clark and Wayne Daniels - pure raw pace. How could Walsh be mean and nasty? Come on .. there were a lot more meaner and nastier bowlers than Walsh. |

dont know of any articles re thommos retiring sri lankan batsmen in the inaugeral world cup, but i am quite sure one of chappelli's books has a chapter on it.
the story is interesting - the australian's had a reputation as 'bullies', so chappelli ordered lillee and thommo to take it easy on their batsmen - for a start. after they got some runs and seemed to be managing things ok, chappelli told thommo to 'step it up'. one batsman got hit on the head and on the foot and retired. not sure about the others. |

Probably the fastest of all was the bowling machine that Kerry used to make James stand up to!
Was very funny reading all of Kerry's eulogies. Poor James went through hell trying to prove to his dad that he was a real man. Tony Greg said he would never have stood up to deliveries at that speed and he would not stand in front of the machine! |

Don't know if he hit anyone in the head, but I think I read an article years ago that Thommo basically retired the entire top order of the fledgling Sri Lankan side in the inaugural World Cup.
He used the "sand shoe" crusher and, when the chance came for the hurt top order batsmen to return to the crease, they basically refused!
If anyone can find that article, I'd love to know the link.........can't seem to locate it! |

| ozpat, DK slowed down because his body gave out - stress fractures in his back. What makes DK so great is he realised what he had to do to get back to the top - and then went ahead and did it. The complete package. |

| You might want to look up a brave bloke by the name of David Lloyd needham. He basically had his promising career destroyed by the physical barrage he took from Thommo. Seems like a lovely bloke though. |

| Thommo's weapon was his slinging action and a certain unpredictability. Certainly fast. DKL was pretty quick in the early years before he realised that sheer speed wasn't enough. He slowed down and become an absolute star. Those two working in tandem were every bit as good as Hall/Griffiths or Holding/Garner. Garner had height which gave him bounce. Lucky he never got to play at "the dome" as he would have wrecked his knuckles on the roof. Can't leave out "Typhoon" Tyson either. Great bowler. |

No guys I wouldnt put Proctor in the same league as Thommo. I saw a lot of him because I was brought up in that part of the world before moving here over 25 years ago
Proctor was quick but nothing like Thommo. Peter Pollock was considered to be faster than Proctor. Proctor was probably only ever 140 - 150k, but was very accurate. He could also move the ball both ways (!), was a very very good off-spin bowler and has the record for the most number of consecutive first class centuries - 6 in the currie cup.
I saw a lot of Proctor's cricket and only ever saw Thommo on TV....
IMO Proctor should be regarded as one of the all time greats, alongside Sobers in terms of ability. Its a tragedy that he never had more of an opportunity |

Still begs the question Ken,
Would he have been up there with Tommo and DKL but for the Safas wilderness years? |

Yeah, he tormented Bobby Simpson 1966-67 side and terrified Bill Lawry's 1969-70 side.
Jeff Thomson maimed, injured and destroyed Mike Denness' England squad in 1974-75 and Edgbaston in 1975, & Clive Lloyd's West Indies side in 1975-76 prior to his shoulder injury.
During those two seasons he was widely acknowledged as the quickest bowler ever seen.
The way Thommo made the ball leap up from a full length and jump directly at the throat was frightening during those two seasons. |

i would say 'probably' thommo - prior to his shoulder dislocation.
just a few reasons -
1. rod marsh said he was the quickest hed seen. he said at his peak he would have to stand more than 30 yards from the stumps - thats outside the 'circle' in 1 day cricket. he said in one of his books about keeping to thommo 'it hurts like hell but i love it'
2. just looking at the footage - its scary. he also got incredible lift. the great alrounder of the bradman and benaud eras - keith miller, said it was scary 'watching him from the stands' (dont have a link from that saw it on telly).
3. some say, because of the testing methodology, thommo's recorded time probably understated his actual speed (i think he was recorded at 159 or so). im not sure if is true, though.
other express bowlers 'up there' would be larwood (in his prime), 'whispering death' (michael holding) and malcolm marshall. i heard 'typhoon tyson' nearly bowled a 'six byes' at the waca, so he must have been quick. shoad aktar would have to be up there, although he is a tad inconsistent.
re comparing generations, i think modern bowlers are over bowled, and are very soon turned into fast-medium bowlers. they play a hell of a lot more games, and very often bowl 10-14 over spells, where in the olden days they would often bowl 5-8. express bowling requires the bowler to be 'fired up' - its hard when it is a day in, day out job.
helmet or no helmet, i agree with those who would rather face the modern bowlers. mind you, pitches are a hell of alot better now (the 'G' was atrocious in the early 80's, and the first 'world cup' pictches were downright dangerous). mind you, the outcricket and versatility of players is much better nowadays. |

A couple of interesting links on fast bowlers
http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/westindies/content/ story/140119.html
http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/southafrica/content /player/46793.html
The first one mentions Colin Croft who tormented Boycott many a time. But I'm surprised that Mike Proctor isn't included.Perhaps because we saw so little of him at Test level
7 Tests 41 wickets @15.02 with an E/R of 2.44 per over and a strike rate of a wicket every 37 balls.
And First class 401 matches 1417 wickets @19.53 with an E/R of 2.53 and a strike rate of 46.15.
Ian Botham describes him as the most fearsome bowler he's ever faced.
A travesty that we saw so little of him at international level. |

If I were rating the meanest, fastest, most accurate, reliable and menacing quicks in the last 30 years I dont think Shoaib would even feature in my top 30!
I can only ever recall 1 spell he bowled where he actually terrorised the opposition, and that was the one occassion where we saw him consistently bowl at over 150k's. He was pretty good that day! I think it was in the ODI world cup held in Kenya a few years ago.
Normally he's good for runs and bloody awful for his teams' morale!
I think Shoaib and Lee are the only 2 bowlers ever to be recorded above 160k. Shoaib twice and Lee only once to my knowledge. I also recall Ritchie and others in the commentary box questioning Shoaib's first delivery over 160k because they did not think it was that quick....
Interesting seeing that Chanel 9 clip on the world's fastest bowler competition. I wonder whether still still measure the ball at the same place because those recorded times were statistically not that fast and I am sure not all the bowlers arrived in prime nick. It makes me wonder... particularly as Thommo won the accuracy rating! |

Fastest Cricket Bowler
The highest electronically measured speed for a ball bowled by any bowler is 100.23mph (161.3km/h) by Shoaib Akhtar (Pakistan) against England on 22 February 2003 in a World Cup match at Newlands, Cape Town, South Africa.
Nicknamed the 'Rawalpindi Express' Shoaib burst onto the cricket scene in 1999, but has since struggled to cement a first choice place in the Pakistan line-up. He has played for many teams, including: Agriculture Development Bank of Pakistan, Pakistan International Airlines, Rawalpindi Cricket Association, Somerset, Khan Research Labs, Durham, Lashings and Pakistan.
Shoaib Akhtar

Newlands, Cape Town, South Africa
100.23mph (161.3km/h)
taken straight from the guinness book of world records.
(yes i know it doesnt take into account pre testing and innaccurate tests) |
