Waqar Younis
No doubt, the best FAST bowler of all time. A man that revolutionised full pitch fast bowling.

ah, that bastion of unbiased, equal-handed cricket comment, channel 9. Never seen a pro-Aussie slant on anything from this channel (nor a "good old days, uphill- both-ways bias).
Brett Lee was probably 2nd, Akhtar down the list, just after Fatty Lehman. |

I remember there was a channel 9 special in the late 70s to assess the worlds fastest bowler
Jeff Thomson won , and from memory, it was 96 miles per hour. |

More claims and claims (especially wikipedia based). Please quote some facts for a change. Even the 147.9 km/hr that he achieved, and that in a fastest bowler competition FOR CRYING OUT ALOUD, was dubious.
An average of 142 km/hr and the last delivery somehow achieving 147.9 km/hr.
About 180 km/hr please give us a break. A man leisurely trodding down the pitch cannot achieve 180 km/hr to save his life.
Thompson a realistic sub 145 km/hr bowler, no more. |

| If you read wikipedia's entry on Thommo (http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Jeff_Thomson) there are claims he bowled up to 180km/h. There was an incident in a suburban match in the early 70's (Mosman vs Bankstown) where he bowled a bouncer (they were called 'bumpers' then) which soared over the wickies head and bounced for the second time at the sight screen. |

I was wondering about the difference in the way Akhtar got his highest recorded speed compared to Thompson. Thommo only got a couple of chances to be tested compared to Akhtar's every ball in many (if not most) games.
Still, I don't really care, I wouldn't have wanted to face either one of them! |

Akhtar? A mere pretender at best.
Questionable character, questionable practices, overrated and would have been eaten alive by the great teams of the past. |

Quite right mate. Shoaib is fastest ever. This is what facts show. And facts are sometimes bitter indeed. Thomson is my favorite bowler and I would defiantly like to give him the crown but looking at official figures of speed measurements and watching the cricket experts I have to say NO. Shoaib Akhtar carries this crown up till now. Jeff Thomson was more accurate and consistent though.
There are indeed other factors which make Shoaib a controversial cricketer. As his behavior on the field and off the field. One of the fact that goes against Shoaib ( on the field ) is that Shoaib is a kind of bowler who put all his energy to generate maximum pace instead of being more consistent and accurate. As he also refused to bowling legend IMRAN KHAN to compromise on his extra long run up. That is the reason that this great bowlar has got so short carrier. If we compare world class fast bowlers among the other bowling qualities, then I think Jeff Thomson and Shoaib Akhtar both are no way near to Wasim Akram, Michal Holding, Terry Alderman, Waqar Younis, Richard Hadley etc.
But discussion undergoing on is only SPEED. That’s why I have to say this is Shoaib Akhtar. |

It's not about sticking cricket ball in anyone's ear. It is about accepting facts.
The fact is that Shoaib is the fastest bowler of all time.
If people want to make Daffy "the Demon" Duck or Roger "the Rapid" Rabbit the fastest ever they are most welcome. But you just can't back it up.
That is the underlying problem. There's no facts to back it up.
No-one, with an ounce of sincerity, can say that Shoaib's deliveries such as round the wicket yorker to get Fleming out, in the World cup 99, was as awesome as humanly possible.
The way the man charged at Fleming and beat a batsmen the stature of Fleming by sheer blinding pace. Unbelievable!
Not only Fleming. The way he clean bowled Tendulkar first ball duck with a yorker, in February 1999. Tendulkar just didn't see the ball, period!
Also against the best Australian batsmen of the modern era in Colombo 2002.
The likes of Ponting, Mark Waugh, Steve Waugh taken out in four deliveries followed by Gilchrist and Warne to give 5/21. To take out some of the best batsmen of all time with sheer pace. That is something to celebrate. Absolutely awesome! |

To Paranthropus
The evidence suggests that Shoaib Akhtar is the fastest bowler of all time, timed at 161.3 (100.4 mph) in 2003.
There were three speed guns and they all showed the same speed. So its as legitimate as you can get.
Nobody else, NOBODY ELSE dead or alive has been timed to be faster than this so by default Shoaib is the fastest bowler ever.
Anybody who knows or watches cricket knows that Shoaib, almost every match, bowls at least 150 km/hr on any pitch.
Anybody who brings other speed readings or famous opinions is just going with speculation and speculation is NOT evidence.
I mean just to apply a bit of common sense here. if Bradman had said that Tyson is the fastest bowler he has ever faced does that automatically make Tyson the fasest ever (as some people are suggesting here).
Did bradman ever face Shoaib, Lee, Waqar (and the inswinging 95 mph deliveries), Lillee, Thommo etc to compare. Of course not!
Therefore how can we take quotes from people and call it evidence.
Defies all logic. |

What I said was 100% facts unlike what you write.
If you had learned to spell properly your comment would not have been here at all.
If you dispute what I said then bring your evidence.
Also if you had tuned into early 90's you would have known the fear and panic in batsmen when they knew they were up against Waqar. This is not the England 92 series. I am referring to the Waqar that played for Surrey prior to 1992, fully fit.
The one that would charge down the pitch like a bull and smash the wickets before the batsmen could put the bat down.
You and the whole world can view this on youtube so stop insulting and accept the facts that I have given you. |
