The thing is, both Hughes and Bevan are/were very good players of short pitched bowling. But both were dismissed cheaply to short balls a couple of times in a row and were immediately pigeonholed.
Bevan scored thousands of runs in his career against short pitched balls and Hughes has started his career in similar fashion.
Unlike Bevan, Hughes will be given another chance - and he'll feast on most test attacks.
Katich only has a couple of years left - he'll retire/get dropped before Ponting goes, so captaincy is out of the question. He is going well now, and has done for 18 months or so. But I get the feeling his decline will be rapid.
Hughes and Jaques could be our Ashes opening pair. |

| North Sydney oval was very very slow, but flat on the weekend, short pitched bowling went for 4 every time, there was no life, and Hughes was not tested. |

| Yeah, he needs to adopt the Steve Waugh approach of wearing them. |

Brad Hodge is no chance, esp after giving the selectors a spray in the media last year.
Hughes needs to sort out his technique against short bowling ,or he will become the next Michael Bevan. |

Jaques is only 30, they didn't pick Hussey for his debut until he was that age, and they brought Martyn back at 34 or whatever it was.
I wouldn't write Jaques off, Watson and Katich are both stopgaps |

I think he missed his chance tbh, I would put hughes back in, Jacques is too old.
And if Hughes gets back in, then Watson is next in line.
Who cares, they are all NSW blues, as long as that gimp Brad Hodge continues to get overlooked Ill be happy. |

| I realise he's hardly a 'new' name, but keep an eye on Jaques this summer. He's absolutely killing it in grade and made Phil Hughes look very ordinary against WA. Says he's completely over that back injury too. |

Mitchell Starc and Burt Coc//kley from NSW are 2 to watch over the remainder of this season.
Coc//kley was picked in the Aus A side recently but had to withdraw with injury problems - bowls in the high 130's and probably the new Mark Cameron for NSW.
Starc's a more than handy leftie that hits the deck hard and has a great inswinger to the left handers. Good to see a leftie that bowls a decent inswinger to a left handed bat too! |

Nathan Rimmington (QLD) looks like he's really coming of age.

Him and young Stevie Smith are two I'm definitely keeping an eye on. |

| He's over 23 though, but you are correct - he looks very promising (hope he doesn't go the way of the equally promising Mark Pommersbach!). |

Was looking at each state's lists and, in particular, the listed players that are 23 and under.
Of these I thought it might be interesting to note how these guys are developing.
So far this season (early days) we've seen a nice 100/50 double from 21 y/o SA opener James Smith. We've also seen a 4 wicket haul in the ODD by 20 y/o QLDer Scott Walter. Phil Hughes, Steve Smith and Moises Henriques all contributed to NSW's T20 Championship win and 22 year old Jon Holland has been called up to tour India with the Aussie side.
Other names we should hear more of this season are Khawaja (NSW), Cutting (QLD), Cooper (SA), Marsh (WA), Hill (Vic)and Wells (Tas).
Not to mention Matthew Wade who is still only 21, he could easily progress to national selection in the next 3-4 seasons.
Josh Hazelwood is 18 and might not play for NSW this season, but he will certainly be knocking on the door should injuries and Aussie selections force the Blues to dig deeper. He will be a gun!
Anyone else that we should keep an eye on? |
