Why do these debates keep coming up? Who cares?
If the next Warne, Gilchrist or Ponting was a 16 year old PNG kid who decided to move to QLD so that he could play test cricket for Australia, would any of us think for a second before opening our arms and welcoming him into the fold? No.
KP is the ONLY English cricketer that you can claim to have been taught and developed in another country (as opposed to the English system). He left SA because he is a whingy little biatch, but he is a proud English rep - so why wouldn't England take him and use his talent? |

Re Strauss
(off bbc website)
Strauss left South Africa with his family at the age of six - and interestingly his first memories of playing cricket were Australia-based since his parents were there briefly before moving to England.
So is he a Yarpie, a Jafa or a Pom?
I tell you what if I had a Pound for every time this phuken discussion came up on here I'd be a feken millionaire |

Maybe there is a solution there Adrian. Perhaps a test side can be formed via a combination of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and even Holland? Similar to the West Indies set up (though run better!).
A first class comp could be held featuring each of those as their independent nations with the test side drawn from that. Surely there is 11 test quality players from those areas?
Also, Kenya and Namibia could join Zimbabwe (though that'd be volatile I'd think!) |

Undeniable proof that England cheat in world sports is that when they play Australia in a rugby league ashes series they call themselves Great Britain, just so they can steal and use players from Wales, Scotland and Ireland to cheat their way to victory..
Yet in this 4 nations Rugby League tournament they aint calling themselves Great Britain...just plain old England...that coz if they were Great Britain it would then be a 7 nations tournament.. |

Being english i am against ireland, scotland, denmark and holland becoming test nations they provide us with talent for our english side/
They should remain minnows and secondary to our county sides.
We also demand the right to take australians, south africans and new ealanders at will.
Because we can. |

| The information from Blarney Castle is that the Irish will be replacing the Aussies in the international cricket scene. This is because most Aussies have Irish blood and are entitled to play for Ireland. |

| The biggest plus to Ireland coming in, from an English perspective, is the crowd numbers would be high almost every time they play. BUT, if the payoff is losing a promising supply of talent from their system, England are unlikely to vote in their favour (just what is coming out of that part of the world anyway). |

England would jump at the chance to have Ireland as a test playing nation
Guaranteed victories, chances to boast averages, and tours that dont involve travel or great length of time away from home. |

Ireland are desperate for Test status in order to stem the flow of talent to England.
Ed Joyce and Eoin Morgan have already jumped ship, Boyd Rankin is in the English emerging squad and Niall O'Brien has said he'd jump at the chance if asked (something that is a real possibility given his talent).
There is also a long list of talented under 19s that are plying their trade in England's counties, academies and universities.
Ireland is a side on the move, but they are frustrated that they cannot retain the cream of their talent, despite becoming regular World Cup representitives.
Players, naturally, want to take the next step and play test cricket, England offers them that chance.
Here's the big barrier to them ever getting the chance to field a test side of their own - 7 out of the 10 current test sides must agree.
England, naturally, will be reluctant to support the bid - they can cherry pick their talent, why turn off that tap?
The 4 Asian sides are pretty well against any expansion that isn't from Asia. Ind, Pak and SL all voted for the poorly performed Bangers to get the 10th spot over their much better rivals, Kenya. It is doubtful any of them will support Ireland.
Australia and Sth Africa could be likely allies, though it is also believed that they are already sick of the congested fixtures and forced games against mediocre opposition, Ireland won't bring enough $$$ into the sport to make it worth while.
The ICC also has a strict criteria for allocation (that almost all of the current sides would've failed to meet had it been the policy at the time!). Ireland will need to establish a proper first class competition first.
I'd love to see Ireland given the chance to step up. |
