Freak - mark these words.
Steve Smith will be wearing a baggy green within 2 yrs. Count on it. So will Henriques, so will Cutting.

Re:Players to Watch Reply to this message
Henriques injured too?
Whats his story?

If he is and he needs replacing - send Hughes.
? though - are we limited to the number of players we can replace due to injury over the course of any given series?

Re:Players to Watch Reply to this message
Steve Smith is over-rated I think, what great performances has he produced for NSW? nothing and his stats prove it,likewise with Henriques and Holland.

Some good young players I like is Hughes obviously, Matthew Wade,Scott Walter,Ben Cutting.

BTW, Henriques is injured, pack your bags boys coz one of us might be called up next to go to India

Re:Players to Watch Reply to this message
BTW - did we all notice that Ben Cutting just took 6/37 in the second innings versus Tassie? Granted, it's tassie, but they're still bloody impressive figures.

Exactly Chucker, but it is too risky, if I were to emerge from the surf at Cronulla covered in brown stuff, I will get mistaken for a *** and beat to death by local supremicists

Re:Players to Watch Reply to this message
Chucker, WA has some kids coming through, Marsh is one and the keeper (Johnson?) too. But I haven't actually seen Marsh play and the keeper spot is a dead cert for Wade.

But they have an older bowling attack with Noffke, Magoffin and Dorey and most of their batsmen have been around a while. Even Theo Alphabet is mid 20s.

Dad says that the Blues selectors found out that he had once visited Melbourne on a holiday.

Dad says it was silly and that everyone should go to Maroubra for their holidays.

Dad says you forgot Dom Thornley and Dom Thornley's son Texas.

He's 12 and Dad says that he'll be Captain of Australia one day even if he doesn't like cricket all that much.

Re:Players to Watch Reply to this message
Here's an 11 from players 23 and under:
Hughes (NSW)
Smith (SA)
Wells (TAS)
Khawaja (NSW)
Henriques (NSW)
Smith (NSW)
Wade (VIC)
Holland (VIC)
Cutting (QLD)
Walter (QLD)
Hazelwood (NSW)

- Only problem I can see is that it is clear the calls of 'NSW bias' will continue for a while yet!

Vics are producing a lot now too - Michael Hill will come along I expect.

Re:Players to Watch Reply to this message
Geeves and Hilfy may not be the elite of fast bowlers in the world, but that spell from them was fast, accurate and lethal. The NSW coach said as much - and he is another that claims Hughes is very good against the short stuff. It was not simply 'short rubbish' as you assume - it worked on 10 other players.

BTW, the Hilfenhaus bouncer is excellent, usually pretty spot on, I don't know too much about the Geeves bouncer - I don't get to see him in FC cricket, wish they'd televise it.

I also think they should pick Hughes to play the Windies at the Gabba.

Re:Players to Watch Reply to this message
As much as you like to think, Geeves and Hilfenhorse are hardly world class hostile bowling.
There is a difference between bowling short rubbish and a good line of short pitched bowling .
Hughes has a problem with short pitched bowling, when bowled on the right line.
He wont fix this problem playing Sheffield Shield matches on the Aussie pitches against the current domestic bowling attacks. Selectors should so some faith and pick him for the Gabba test against the Windies

Re:Players to Watch Reply to this message
Bellerive is bouncier and offers more to the bowlers than the Gabba, Hilfenhaus and Geeves (both 140+) peppered Hughes with a string of bouncers - they hit him a few times too. He went on to make 160 out of a team score of less than 300!

Outside of Harmy, how many tall, fast bowlers are ther in world cricket that are able to produce such bounce from good length balls? The answer is none.

Want to know why the rest of the world didn't simply play 4 quicks who could bowl consistent bouncers at the batsmen all day long when the Windies were dominating? Because not many people can do it! So even if Hughes does have trouble against players like Harmison, he'll be fine - there isn't another one out there and Harmy is GOOOONE.

I'll say this, there have been 4 batsmen in my lifetime that I've seen come into state cricket and and made me say, on first sight, that they WILL be test match stars. The first 2 were in the early 90's, one was a big leftie from QLD, the other a small stroke player from Tassie.

Then a few years ago came a kid from NSW called Clarke, and now there's Phil Hughes.

Each one of them came out blazing, got selected young and then got dropped. The first 3 not only returned better players, but they all became genuine stars of the game.

Hughes will follow suit, it's a matter of when.

Re:Players to Watch Reply to this message
Get Real. Apart from the Gabba, all the aussie pitches are now flat. It is a national disgrace how the WACA has been altered .
Look at the scores from Adelaide, WACA, MCG and SCG in the last 12 months, and the batsmen dominate.
Nannes, Tait and Noffke were injured much of last season, Siddle didnt play much domestic cricket
last year. I dont think Qld ever played their preferred top 3 bowlers together due to injury, and most states had a problem with bowlers out injured or on national duties. NSW had Bollinger, Bracken , Cameron and Clark out injured and Lee in the test team. No wonder guys like Rogers and Hodge are making so many runs - flat pitches and weakened bowling attacks.
Hughes was made to look ordinary by Harmison in the lead up game in England. What happened in the test matches was due to his feeling the pressure that the Poms applied to him. He was targeted and he failed - wasnt just a media beatup.

Re:Players to Watch Reply to this message
Hughes cops that "perceived weakness" because his technique involves a movement away with his back foot, instead of the textbook "back and across". Critics look at the video of his dismissals and to them, it looks like he's 'scared'.

They ignore all the times he "backs away" to smash the ball through the offside.

He'll be back.

Re:Players to Watch Reply to this message
The pitches in most areas are in favour of the bowlers. Hughes has had to face the likes of Nannes, Siddle, Hilfenhaus, Geeves, Dorey, Magoffin, Noffke, George, Tait etc who are all over 140 and all posses a decent bouncer.

Sth Africa bowled too full to him, but they also gave him some short stuff - which he despatched.

Look again at the Wales test and see how many boundaries he belted against the poms when they bowled short to him. He tried it once too often, to a ball that was too straight, and he was out. He got out because of enthusiasm, not because of a weakness to that particular delivery.

Second test he was clearly told to hook, he brushed one with his glove and he was out.

They are the sum total of his wickets to short balls in test cricket!

It is a perceived weakness based on media beat ups. He was dropped because MJ was out of form and they wanted to back up Siddle and Hilfy with Watson.

He'll be back.

Re:Players to Watch Reply to this message
In the Sheffield Shield currently, how often will Hughes have to face a decent quick or someone who bowls consistently at over 145 kph??
The pitches for the domestic games are slow and flat, so he isnt going to be tested too often.
